I only ever saw one episode of that, and it was the one with Indy at the Easter Rising.

RTE aired it, in an early evening slot and may have repeated it quite a bit. It was then called “the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles” and alternated between a child Indy and a late teens/young adult version which was a slight bit confusing (don’t be looking for story arcs or anything like that, this is an early 1990s show!)

I remember liking the show quite a bit and it looked fairly decent for the time as well, if memory serves...

So this isn't going to effect us here on this side of the water, or it might ! But Disney is planning on moving Huhu to Disney+ in the States and going by the below article possibly buying Comcast's one-third stake of Huhu.

Hulu, not Huhu which sounds like some sort of 🙊🙈 service.

And now they're going to be removing original content like Willow, Big Shot and Turner & Hooch.

not sure if that will be here as well. Likely will be due to the reason for removal.

Pretty shítty, and as always a reminder that these digital platforms have upended the concept of permanence and ownership of media and fiction. I've heard it said that the total removal means there's now zero chance of the various Writers et al getting any residuals from these shows. Which again, pretty shítty.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,815 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Yep. Seems there are at least 2 reasons: residuals and tax write-offs.

And apparently since it's for tax write-offs, they can't shop the shows to another channel like HBO Max did with some shows going to ad-supported platforms. So once they're gone from Disney+, they're gone for good (at least by legal means).

Willow is only about 6 months old as well. Whatever about quality, it doesn't deserve that. I know other shows there are also not very old. And not much notice if want to get the shows watched before they leave.

The entire appeal of streaming platforms is having an expanding library of film & TV on demand - the more original content is produced, the safer it should be. But now executives have opted to just remove stuff after a few months to benefit from tax write-downs, wiping out the public's access to the material in the process (thank god for piracy as an archiving tool in cases like this, given these things rarely get released on physical media anymore).

Shitty for the public, but even worse for the artists who put years of their lives into making this stuff. And it doesn't matter if it was mediocre or poorly reviewed: they shouldn't be wiped from history after six months in the name of a few numbers being adjusted on a mega-corporation's balance sheet.

The royalty payments for the shows are based on total subscribers, 160m subs. They're paying them more and more and the shows aren't being watched.

Disney makes billions in profits - they can easily afford the royalties. I don't have any sympathy for them. Companies upended years of standard practice by adopting streaming and subscription models, and they should do the bare minimum of actually keeping the original content available if they're insisting on playing the long game.

This is something that really bothers me too, just consigning stuff to a freezer. It's not a comment on quality of stuff or anything just fairly cynical business practices.

From the outside it definitely looks like everyone copied Netflix's model but don't have a clue what they are actually doing. If they are all losing so much money on streaming, what was the point in hoarding their own content and not just licensing to Netflix (or whoever).

Yeah, Netflix has a lot of problems - not least their ruthless approach to just cancelling stuff they barely promoted in the first place - but they do at least keep their originals up there. I could be wrong, but the main ones that have disappeared from Netflix are things like the Marvel shows or Arrested Development which had more complicated licensing situations. Still not ideal by any stretch, but very different to removing stuff just as a tax write-off.

their streaming service has never made a profit though, they have recently fired over 7,000 staff, closed there centre piece park attraction that Star Wars themed hotel that reportedly cost 2billion and only opened over a year ago. They are clearly trying to reverse a hemorrhage of cash

As a company overall they make money. Their streaming services are losing money.

People overuse this "its a tax write off" argument

If anyone's curious as to how much all those shows getting removed from Disney+ might earn the Mouse House?

According, apparently, to filings to the SEC all those shows like Willow dropped into the Memory Hole will result in a tax write-off totalling approx $1.5 billion. Now, that seems like a helluva lot saved cos of Willow... So not sure if it includes things like the also recently-closed Star Wars section in Disneyland but still; that's some cheddar.

Its not a tax write off, they declared to the SEC an impairment charge of 1.5bn , which means they are writing down the value of their assets by that amount, so its a loss in the results they release. They took the shows off to not have to fork out residuals which would be a new expense, so their argument is the 1.5bn in shows wouldnt generate new subscriptions/renewals so has no value.
