Let's face it, we're really sh1te at it and it costs ridiculous amounts of money, so why bother?
(I feel the same about the army, but that's another thread.)

Thought the exact same thing looking at the spread for the rugby team. Allowed to win a micky mouse cup every other year, while the rest of the world are preparing for a world cup we get laughed out of.

Ya we really set the Euros alight with our last two performances

All tax payer money should be withdrawn immediately.

We haven't produced a decent footballer in 20 year.

Go wan away you miserable bollix.

Exactly this. Said better than I would have.

It's sport for fcuk sake. It makes people.
happy to follow it and that's enough - not a fan of the corruption that accompanied delaney but that's another thread.

It's sport and culture. If someone is unable to be happy for people who enjoy it then they might be a miserable bollix, like you said.

I actually don't like football but I like to see the Ireland team do well because loads of people love football and it makes them happy.

Up there with one of the worst threads on boards ever.

So I'm a miserable bollix cos the Irish soccer team are sh1te? lol.
Dunno why the rugby comparison, at least we've actually won something in that sport. Really though, why is the State wasting huge amounts of money on this rubbish?

Absolute bollocks. FAI has been a national shame for years. Fools continue to support it, but fools they are. If they stopped supporting the FAI we'd see change.

What did we win in Rugby? The annual 5 game tournament with three half decent teams in it, or was it the greatest team in the world award when we beat the all blacks in a friendly, sorry "test" game

I don't see how that answers the question? Are you saying we should waste millions on soccer because our Rugby team isn't great either?

I don't see how that answers the question?

Ok your a miserable bolicks because you value a meaningless tournament with essentially three friendlies over any success on a truly global sport. Ill stick to supporting my country and you can stick to the unionist appeasing private school club #teamofus. Deal?

How much does it cost, and who pays?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,493 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

When did everyone start taking winning so seriously? Some almost see it as a slight on their own character if their team loses, and I also don't see how anyone could see tonight's result as a major surprise. For the entire existence of international football, Ireland has not been exactly setting the world alight, why would that change now?

We're really sh!te at the moment, yet one unlikely win away from the European finals. And if we don't win that, we'll likely get a playoff. I'm going to continue to sit back and enjoy the misery of being an Irish fan no matter what comes next

€25. I paid this week and I think it’s your turn next week or it could be the week after.

I didn't mention any other sport, one of your soccer supporter buddies brought that up.

You mentioned we won something. The only thing to win, of merit, in that sport is the world cup. I didn't catch the game on Saturday but the scoreline was great, looked really competitive, as a competition with the best teams in the world should be.

Before you mention the soccer team winning anything, we are the defending Iceland triangular tournament winners and Celtic cup champions. Those tournaments sound as ridiculous as an arbitrary number of nation's champions

The Marshall Islands is the only country that doesn’t have a football team afaik. Maybe if they start one then we can drop out? Wouldn’t want to be wrecking their buzz.

Peter Schmeichel said about the Ireland team "They are a bad team, absolutely awful". Though he's an arrogant git its hard to disagree.. but still we're Ireland and a hard team to play against.

Thanks, was having trouble sleeping but reading this boring and predictable rambling has me nodding off, you have a talent.

I did not bring any other sport into this discussion.

I mentioned the rugby team won something in answer to one of your fellow supporters bringing rugby into the discussion. If you bothered to read the thread first before spouting personal abuse you might have noticed that.

Sorry if I offended you. I genuinely thought you were looking for an answer below.
So I'm a miserable bollix cos the Irish soccer team are sh1te? lol.

Please accept my most humble apologies, and I hope that your evening improves from here.

So you can't answer the question?

I thought I'd answered it, but then you accused me of abusing you?

If you mean "Why do we have a soccer team"
Arguably the third most popular sport in Ireland behind Gaelic football and hurling.
The most popular sport in the world, with the highest participation numbers by miles.
Significantly lower risk of serious injury than other field sports.
It's a good way to socialise and stay fit.
    Almost no barriers to entry

I suspect you knew all the above but work away, I've entertained you enough

So we can give some English lads not good enough to play with their home country the opportunity to play international football.

Northern Ireland could have said that as if a week ago in a group containing HOLLAND and GERMANY yet were they ever likely to qualify?!

F*ck no. UEFA needs to address the group schedules as some are seriously bottom heavy and giving minnows a false sense of hope / grandeur

Isn't that why they brought in the Nations League?
