Halloween is nearly upon us. Wouldn't mind playing some horror games in October. Any system any game really. So any suggestions?

Silent Hill is a given. Would you class something as Doom 3 as a horror game tho? :p

    Welcome to any suggestions :)

What platform are you playing on?

    Resident Evil 2 (Remake)
    Dead Space 1 and 2
    Alien: Isolation
    The Evil Within
    Outlast 1 and 2
    Layers of Fear
    Soma

The list goes on and on.

I don't remember playing that game.

Yes, yes it most certainly does.

I would add F.E.A.R, RE7, RE 1,2 & 3 off the top of my head.

    Bioshock & System Shock 2

I have been playing a horror game every Halloween for the last few years
My choices this year are either Resident Evil 0 or The Evil Within 2

Any console and any game really. From Atari 2600 to Ps4/Xbox one :pac:
Wouldnt mind going down memory lane or discovering a game I may yet have played. Am sure the thread might give suggestions to others on what to play too.

Have you played Alien Isolation? Its a proper Pampers Fest. You will need a weeks supply of nappies to see you through the game. There is something about being chased by sheer horror, all whilst being kinda defenceless.

Its a quality game and clocks in at around 15-20 hours.

X-Files on the PS2. Good game. Especially if you like RESI/Silent Hill.

    Outlast 2 is terrifying!

I love my horror games and rate this as one of the games that scared the sh*t out of me the most

I would highly recommend Evil Within 2. I really enjoyed it.

Until Dawn is great, it's kinda like being in a horror movie.

Stay away from Layers of Fear. It's pants.

I'd highly recommend Soma. Not only is it scary but it's a great piece of hard sci fi.

Might finally play Project Zero 2 on Wii

played a bit of it a few years ago on 360 when I got it as a gift. Gonna go back to it now as it's on Xbox Pass. Totally on the list!

Any decent ps1 horror games? (besides the usual resi games) my ps1 mini needs to be hacked and palyed more ;)

Silent Hill is the daddy in my opinion

Loads of good PS1 horror games.

Dino Crisis is Resi with Dinosaurs
Echo Night is interesting if a bit janky
    Same with Hellnight
The original Parasite Eve is an absolute gem. Avoid the sequel
Love the Deception games as well, although they are just lots of fun with a horror aesthetic rather than actual horror games.

And of course there is Overblood. It's ****ing awful but at the same time absolutely hilarious. Only the Ring on the Dreamcast comes close to being as bad and as funny.

Deadly Premonition is always good in a quirky sort of way.

Haunting Ground and Clocktower on PS2 also a good shout and can always be picked up fairly cheap in CEX.

Evil Within 1 & 2 great games also if you want someting a bit more modern.

A White Day is another PSN game that seems to be on sale fairly often which is pretty good too.

    Sanitys Requiem on Gamecube.

Horror games? Sounds like a good excuse to recommend......... BLOODBORNE!

I’m much more interested in the weirder, more experimental sort of horror games these days - and sadly there’s not many of them :pac:

I’d definitely recommend without hesitation Anatomy by Kitty Horrorshow (PC via Itch). It should run on any reasonably functioning PC. It’s the sort of strange, unexplained horror material that gets under your skin even when you can’t articulate fully why. It’s a short experience based on ever changing environments (broadly similar to PT) but is much more striking than many even good games that are hours longer.

Paratopic hits a similar some of sweet spot with its fetchingly PS1-style graphics, while Pathologic 2 comes cautiously recommended if you want a gruelling example of long-form, physically draining, sustained misery.

Although I never played it, I hear Detention is a good game

RE7, would be crapping myself if I was doing it in VR, scary enough as it is

It knew what it had to be & didn't take itself too serious, that's it genius imo.

I'm going to try play Vampyr as I have it by my PS4 for months now. I'll play the demo of A Plague Tale: Innocence too, maybe not a full blown horror but if I enjoy it I will buy it.

Always been meaning to play Costume Quest too as it only really can be played at Halloween :o

Not really, no. Played for an hour or two, and there were some scares, but overall it was very forgettable and i didn't go back to finish it.

If you have access to a PSVR - RE7, Paranormal Activity & The Exorcist should get the blood pumping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭daheadonu

Not a straight up horror game per say but a plague tale is very tense and creepy at times, would definitely recommend it and I'm a person who was wary of a game having an extra character always at your side to watch over,it actually adds to the scares and dread

Not technically a horror game, but Dying Light - the night time sections instilled geniune fear in me, you'll know why when it happens.

Unless you're living in the zombie apocalypse I'm fine with you including dying light as a horror game
I pretended I didn't like the game because of the night time sections

If System Shock and Bioshock are on the list then Prey should be too.

Ah, its more of a first person melee action game, theres not that many jump scares if you stick to going out by day.

night time though, lord jebus!

Well gonna play me some The Darkness on the 360. Only 1 euro in CEX.
    What a great game.

Anyone else starting to play horror games yet?

I'm going to dip into Days Gone again and give Challenge Mode a shot. I will try to give The Last of Us a play again. I'll be on the spirits playing that as I will need spirits to help me get through it.

I actually played the 2nd one first so when I tried to play the first one I just couldn't get over the gameplay

I couldn't get over the gameplay the first time I played it. At release I thought it was sub par and felt like a relic with some awful enemy AI.

I think I'm going to finally play Outlast this year. Bought it last year, intending to play it at Halloween and never did. This year for sure!

I have a hankering to play some crappy fmv game like Phantasmagoria over the Halloween, hopefully gog have a decent sale this year.
Evil within 1 has been knocking around for a bit too, I'm about halfway through but it keeps falling by the wayside the last few months

I'd recommend harvester. One of my faves.

I got about 70% through Evil Within 1 and dropped it.

Started SOMA recently but a glitch early on prevented me from progressing and put me off it for a while. Someone claiming to be one of the VAs in the game tuned in to me streaming trying to help but also mentioned some massive spoilers :(

Someone online recreated P.T in VR, that sounds like something to try.

Played INSIDE last night, it's proper creepy - very tense throughout, kinda spoiled by the insta-deaths though.

Epic Games Store is giving away Observer & Alan Wake's American Nightmare this week, so 2 horror games for €0.00.

I kept meaning to play Observer on gamer pass and they took it down the other day! thought it would last to the end of the month. Might as well pick it up there.

I played Silent Hill 1 and 2 over the Halloween to really get me in the spirit of the season. It was just such a fantastic series.

Speaking of which if anyones interested, I'm running a Silent Hill themed game of Werewolf over on the Forum Games forum starting on November 24th. Anyone who likes Silent Hill and is interested in trying out this here werewolf game that all of Boards.ie has been talking about, should check it out :pac:

Soma was great, if you like existential horror. There are monsters in it but that's not really where the horror comes from. I think they even released an update that made the monsters non-hostile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,044 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

    Been playing 'The Beast Inside'

Beautiful game. Great tension. Some really good scares. Particularly chapter six.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

I enjoyed the monster sections too though, it's great how you can't look at them or run away, so I'd just be crawling forward with the sound point, praying I'm not eviscerated at any moment until I get around the next corner
