    Porco Rosso – 8/10

As with all the Ghibli films I have seen so far, this is off-beat, quirky and brilliant. The layers and depth that Miyazaki manages to get into these family films is a hell of a feat. A child can watch it as a cartoon about a flying pig pilot. Adults can get hooked into the metaphors about post WW1 politics and fascism.

I decided to watch the English language version which features Michael Keaton as the titular ‘Porco’. There is a good feature on the blu-ray that goes into detail about the voice over recording process and how they not only have to translate but also adapt it, so the words fit with the mouth movements. Here they do a superb job (much better than the dubbed version of Spirited Away) and all the cast members are well suited.

Is dark worth persevering with? I watched 2 episodes and actually forgot to go back to it. Think I rememeber some kid going missing and there being some weird tunnel. Is there a good payoff?

Season 1 for me was brilliant.....too much time and pandemic ness is in my head that I have zero concentration span
I need to cop on so il going to rewatch one and then two and three

Like the ending of season 1 was so so good

Season 1 of Dark was one of my favourite seasons of anything ever, I thought it was brilliant! It requires concentration obviously (subtitled) but even aside from that, the story is complex and not something you could just flick on casually. But like others have said I found going on to season 2 a year or 18 months later I really forgot so much of the story and some of the intricate details which took away from the enjoyment a bit and I didn't enjoy it quite as much. I will definitely watch season 3 but I fear the same could happen again.

Went back to it and watched as far as end of episode 5 !!! Feel like
the guy who killed himself at the start was actually the boy who went missing in the past. I’m guessing that nurse takes him as her son and the note he left was only to be opened after his young self had gone back in time

If I’m wrong, I’m prob more lost then I thought. Is it ok to be a bit lost at times? Also find the
time shifting to and from younger characters a buy jarring at times. I know the main ones but the lessor characters like relations or other characters are hard to keep up with.

    Thread for Dark here: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057794396
Dark is for puzzle-lovers, with drama. The reveals progress like clockwork, but you need either a very good memory, or a character map/timeline from a website to remind you of who's who.
Any guesses as you go will mean swathes of blacked-out spoiler spaces, as it gets really complicated. It's not only worth investing the time to figure out/keep up with what's going on though, it's probably very wise to. The 'Dark' thread has some links for who's who, though it looks like the Netflix official site is the best if you want to avoid spoilers.

This was on TG4 a couple of years ago as An Klondike, I think they made it into a film and redubbed it in English.

Looking at the list, it looks like a fair bit of Irish content is after going up on Netflix today.

Yep, you've nailed it. and unless I missed some other complexity completely, I didn't think it was all that mysterious or complicated if you've ever watched anything with that sort of structure/conceit before.

Leave No Trace is good! Few thoughts from after I watched it on release:

After an extended break, Winter's Bone director Debra Granik is back with another tale of characters living outside 'normal' society - in this case, a father and daughter living off the grid in the woods outside Portland. This is a more social realist (relatively speaking) take on that idea than the often baffling Captain Fantastic, and this is clearly the superior film. Granik is a canny observer of both people and landscapes - it's never particularly showy, but whether it's a character's reaction shot or a vast woodland the important emphasis is always underlined clearly and effectively. Granik, like The Florida Project's Sean Baker, treats her characters with respect and compassion which is all-important. She also holds back some of the details, only hinting at key backstory... a decision that feels like it was a wise one. A modest film by design, but a thoughtful, moving one at that.

(Small addition to that note: also a terrific breakthrough performance form Thomasin McKensie, and great to see the reliably excellent Ben Foster - who it often seems is cast alongside bigger names - in a clear leading role).

Had they lost that for a while? I recommend it to action fans. It can be a bit tricky to follow, but it's bookended by a pair of amazing first person perspective action scenes. Think Nikita, by way of Oldboy.

I was underwhelmed by it too. I suppose I was comparing it to Winter's Bone, which maybe isn't fair, but it didn't do much for me.
