most if not all gaming laptops are on the heavy side and have bigger power bricks (more watts) tbh.

I'm in the market for something similar to the OP and am also looking at the HP Omen 17
This seems to be the best price out there
    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-hp-omen-an107na-fhd-ips-120hz-g-sync-i7-8750h-8gb-ddr4-256gb-nvme-ssdplus2tb-hdd-8gb-gtx-1070-wi?gclid=CjwKCAjwldHsBRAoEiwAd0Jybdq7dL-nGPqqR6TmorehWmnWJbMk4F8NwTK25GPLmdtWaTlLMwaerBoCXSMQAvD_BwE

Can anyone confirm that scan.co.uk is not scam.co.uk?:P

Scan are fine, they've been around a long time. That iis the older model omen 17 by the way. Might be better looking at the newer version. Better screen and graphics card even with a 1660ti

Cheers guys. In my ignorance had been assuming bigger number = better when it comes to graphics cards.

Cheers guys. In my ignorance had been assuming bigger number = better when it comes to graphics cards.

the nvidia cards are a big confusing

    10xx - last gen

20xx current gen but with ray-tracing

    16xx current gen without ray-tracing

typically current gen numbering of same model will be of similar power or a little more than last gen 1 higher model number

    e.g. 1650 > 1550 ti

1660 ti > 1070 (close but 1660ti more efficient in power usage also)

Thanks for all your helpful advice Glasso. It proved useful in deciding on the laptop to buy. As you mentioned ready tracing wasn't that useful on a laptop so the 1660ti was a good choice I think for the reduced price.

actually to clarify the nvidia cards numbering the last gens have been split into 2 groups

    lower to mid

    16xx (current) vs 15xx (older)

    higher end

    20xx (current) vs 10xx (older)

in laptops the 2060 is only very marginally better (5% or so) than the 1660ti in frames per second performance due to a strange laptop implementation of the card.

on desktop it's maybe 15% better.

    Hi Guys ,

I'm also in the market for a new machine upgrading from my N55 Asus which has served me well over the last 5 years , the choice of laptops now compared to then is astounding! My head has been spinning a little bit... I use my laptop when travelling with work but for gaming as I have a work laptop for the rest so even though none have great battery life the better it has the better for me... I have a budget of around 2k for something good, below is what I need and a list of what I'd be interested in that I want to narrow down.

    * External battery access so I can carry a spare and swap out easily
    * Sufficent cooling system with proven effectiveness
    * General gaming is around Starcraft , Football manager , XCOM , Battlestar Deadlock , CIV series
    * Want one that is future proof for a few years and ideally can be upgraded

I've seen a lot of reports of some systems with the new I9 9900 having severe throttle issues in controlling the temp and some high rated I7's actually outperforming them , from the laptops I've looked at the below three systems stand out as the best value.

    HP OMEN Intel® Core™ i7-9750H processor NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2060 - 6 GB 15 512 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD 16 GB RAM 1500

    PC Specialist Intel® Core™ i9 Eight Core Processor i9-9900K (3.6GHz) 16MB Cache NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2060 - 6.0GB GDDR6 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1 17 240GB ADATA SU630 2.5" SSD, SATA 6 Gb (520MB/R, 450MB/W) x 2 16GB Corsair 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB) 2250

    Acer Predator Helios 300 Intel Core i7-9750H Hexa Core Processor Dedicated GeForce RTX 2060 6GB Graphics 17 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD + 1000GB HDD 16GB DDR4 RAM 1900

Omen best in price but in reviews I've read it's slimmer frame seems to be creating issues with cooling the processors/GPU on full load, anyone any experience? I really like the ACER seems to tick a lot of boxes and PCS has fantastic value but is a bit of a unknown.

Looked briefly at Alienware , can't see the value in what you get vs these systems.

most of the 2060's in laptops have a reduced power 80w chip which reduces performance compared to the 160w version in desktops.

for that reason, not really worth it, unless it has the 160w version, to get a 2060 laptop over a 1660ti laptop.

Thanks again Glasso. Thats interesting, from what I had read the performance difference between 2060 and 2070 was not all that significant. To hear that the 1660ti is not significantly slower than the 2060 is a revelation to me though.

I don't think ray tracing or dlss are crucial requirements for this even if it is to to be useful for 5 years hence.

    ?

re ray-tracing with the nvidia 2060 (in laptops anyways) the frame rates for ray-tracing on are fairly sh1t so if you really want to use it you need to spend more money on a 2070 or 2080.

it won't become fully mainstream for another few years and the games still look good without it....

After reviewing various models for the past few days I think the Predator Triton is the best all rounder for what I am looking for , good performance and battery life , mobile and light... This is the best price I can find it for at the minute and you get a backpack and mouse from Acer , anyone know where it can be got for cheaper? I've tried Scan , Komplett and Overclockers as well...

    seems expensive

this is a few hundred grams heavier but has a 2070 card and is £150 cheaper and is a respected line (ROG Strix) from Asus

re battery life, whatever the quoted life, running actual intensive gaming off a battery you are looking at less than 2 hours. gaming laptops need to be plugged in for gaming.

    Cheers ,

Yep I've faced that on my current laptop which is ASUS (N55) and I have liked the brand in the five years I've had it...I travel a lot with work so the battery life is more for when I can't find a socket to plug into to just browse, watch videos etc...If it could handle two hours of light gaming that'd be great also...

if you have the nvidia optimus feature where you can turn off the graphics card for when you don't need it, for browsing etc then that can help

what you could consider in your case is buying an ultrabook with thunderbolt 3 and then use an external graphics card amplifier setup
