In order to achieve a fully egalitarian society, should the government not dedicate additional funding to travellers?

So you think it will stop the anti social behaviour, all evidence to date suggests otherwise.

Absolutely, the last three decades of endless carrot has resulted in tremendous results for all concerned

Of course it would. The anti-social behaviour can be attributed to being disenfranchised for so long.

Sure let’s just use all the tax they pay to fund it...

If they wanted a fully egalitarian society they should start with removing their ethnic minority status, and holding them to account on the same level as members of the settled community.

Thats not what you want of course ...

Halting sites need to be placed in richer areas, which will cost more.

It must be a week since the last traveller thread. You have to admit they have a knack (pun not intended) of occupying a lot of people's minds.

Why not? Taxes should benefit everyone.

Time for another round of bans is it?

Are you suggesting that POTC don't pay taxes?

If a traveller wants to go to College, are there grants available for them?

Yes. However, low attendance from POTC indicate that the current funding model isn't enough.

We have exceeded our quota for Travelling Community bashing a long time ago. Before this descends any further, we have heard it all before. It is possible to debate without throwing slurs about.

Please read any sociology book and you'll learn the damage of language on marginalized communities. The N-word used to be standard. Language can be violent.

It is a chicken and egg scenario. There is not as many going because of lower support. No support because there is not many going.

If there was funding to help those in the Travelling Community to better themselves, it would initiate a chain reaction for subsequent generations.

100 per cent profit when the materials are sourced 'free'.

It's like people almost want to be annoyed by this. Almost nobody even questions the sincerity of the OP because it's important to believe that there is a "lunatic left" devoid of all practical sensibility who wants the average punter to suffer.

Sorry OP I'm sure your one-liners are 100% sincere.

There is no "if", Ted. Travellers have had all sorts of specialised funding for generations now. Its not working because life is easier spent on welfare hiding behind your ethnic status.

I think we should spend more on them, cos all the millions thrown at them up to now has been money well spent.

Per head there is a huge amount of public money spent on supporting this group.

Directly from free housing/halting sites, massive welfare and health service bills due to the very high % not in lawful employment and poor lifestyles.

Then you have a huge amount of social services resources dedicated to travellers. There are heavily staffed centres dedicated to taking in individual traveller families, giving them more than one-on-one round the clock care in a mostly fruitless attempt to deal with their utterly chaotic and destructive lives.

Next we have the after traveller resources, cleaning up public and private land after they leave them covered in rubbish, destruction and abused animals like a house proud person who has a slug infestation scrubbing the slime trails every morning.

Then we have the legal resources, Gardai chasing their various criminal activities around the country, legal aid and services for the court cases and of course prison costs for the huge % that end up incarcerated in a country that is incredibly lenient on criminals.

Not forgetting the hidden costs, private citizens having to recover financially and personally from being crime victims, insurance premiums and payouts as well as the more intangibles such as bad publicity and reports from tourists who don't visit Ireland due to bad experiences from others who have had the misfortune of dealing with these people.

If you took the totality of public funds spent on all aspects of traveller's lives and allocated it to the same number of average Irish PAYE worker's families it would have the same effect on their lives as winning the lottery; new houses cars, no need to ever work again and live very comfortably without any recourse to criminality to fund that lifestyle.

Travellers are massively funded and are a huge waste of that money, what is needed is for strict behaviour boundaries to be set and enforced, break the cycle of their toxic and destructive lifestyles with proper punishment for rule breaking as well as resources to support proper development.

Let's face it, Travellers are not the only part of Irish society that are completely disfunctional, we seem to have sleepwalked into a situation where holding people to account for bad behaviour is considered a foreign concept and as usual it is the decent law abiding, tax paying majority that are paying the price both in the wallet and the everyday reality of living in a society that expects them to be uncomplaining victims of the very people they are financially supporting.

I would agree with a bigger budget for the Gardai for dealing with them

They're not going because they don't finish the Leaving. That's not because they don't get support. My sister used to volunteer in an after school homework program and a lot of them just weren't interested in learning. Girls are lucky to finish the Junior Cycle and then drop out to get married. Boys aren't interested in doing the Leaving. That's just the way their attitude is towards education - they don't value it.

That's not me being racist/throwing around slurs. It's the truth. You could throw all the money in the world towards traveller education but unless they decide that staying in school and focusing on establishing a career is the way to go, nothing will change. There are also sections of regular Irish society who have also fallen into the multi-generational welfare trap but we don't have an 85% unemployment rate.

I figure the OP was just posting in order to stir things up. I decided not to read any of the responses as I'm fairly sure that he/she achieved his/her desired objective.

For what it's worth, I've met a number of travellers who were good decent people and others who were chancers. Pretty much like the population in general.

As someone who is not a member of the traveller community, I tend to be a little bit cautious when dealing with members of the community. I think this is probably (possibly?) justified, but then again, I wonder if this makes me guilty of prejudice against the traveller community.

I honestly don't know the answer to this question, although I'm fairly sure there are loads of people out there who will have fairly definite opinions in this regard!

I think Travelers get more than enough provided for them as it is.

    More? Lol, no.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,102 ✭✭✭greencap

Any funding given to the travellers should be done under condition of compliance.
If they want stuff they should have to sign up and play ball or they get diddly, while at the same time those who do play ball get welcomed.

    Good behavior ... good halting.
Damage the halting site, breach terms and you lose your priviledges.

This is how it works for pretty much everyone in pretty much all aspects of life in the civilized world.
So we should promote equality in the case of travellers too, equal rights.

Agreed, education is not rated highly on the radar. Funding was the wrong word in my initial post. Support is more what is needed.

There will always be a Them v Us when there is no combined view of what best suits everyone and have everyone on the one side.
