Medvedev wins the third set 7-5. Fightback underway?

Medvedev has all the momentum now! Can see it going 5, and then who knows..

Some amount of empty seats or would that be people just out for a break?

The next gen of ladies are stepping up more than the men are. You have Osaka and now Andresscu winning slams and others like bencic and svitolina getting to the latter stages of competitions. You don't see that in the mens

10 different winners in the last 12 slams - that's just highly inconsistent more than anything else in terms of a trend.

the standard of finals has been absolute shyte in general.

only a 1/3 or less in the last 5/6 years making it to 3 sets. many of them being absolutely 1-sided

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Open_Era_Grand_Slam_women%27s_singles_finals

granted there have certainly been some 1-sided men's finals also in the last number of years but it has generally been far more competitive (case-in-point this very men's final) and with some classics or near-classics thrown in there.

highly impressive for anyone to dare not to roll-over when they're 2 zip down against the Nadal beast.

To a decider we go. Some incredible shots in that game to break by Medvedev.

    Nadal looks very, very tired.

what a fooking performance to take that game and the 4th set. that was an excellent serve by Nadal and he sticks in the the corner down the line.

    Medvedev has it.

flat shot style and elastic-stretch limbs.

Did Nadal try to play serve and volley on that last point ?

Medvedev wins the fourth set 6-4. A huge upset could well be on the cards.

what happened there on serve - Nadal wasn't fully through his arse-crack-picking-routine to receive?

MedVed refuses to get rattled nonetheless

Nadal not happy that things aren't going his way

Nadal pissing me off with his "fired-up behaviour" and time-violations.

I want medved to take this down.

    He's playing some inspired stuff.

Great range and a vicious flat forehand.

hope that's not too serious with his knee

Nadal is time wasting going for the towel on almost every point.

Strategy , winners find a way in the face of adversity

victory by OCD annoy-the-fook-out-of-your-opponent is not a proper way to try to win.

he's doing it on-serve and on receipt of serve.

being an annoying OCD bollix even more than usual tonight.

Nadal breaks from 0-40 down. Incredible, exhausted tennis from both of them.

I don't normally go against Nadal but that is not the case here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,411 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

And he consolidates it with a dominant hold.

Nadal's overheads are looking dodgy as hell the last hour and a half or so.

    that's that surely

Medved tossed that service game away needlessly

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,411 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

Medvedev doesn't deserve to have 6-2 on the final set record here. He's been absolutely brilliant.

Really thought it might be a Delpo vs. Federer moment ten years later but looks like it's not to be.

    Nadal though :). GOAT.

Russian is knackered and lost the head

Nadal holding at 1-1 in the set was critical.
Medvedev had all the momentum but Nadal managed to battle through that game.

Medvedev tired after that ,doesnt look 100% and making too many unforced errors.
He is young ,hard to beat Nadal in a final first time out ,even harder when coming from 2 sets down.

I am not sure what noise Mark Petchey just made on commentary.

Medved has just lost much of his tennis ability in the last few games completely - must be wreckedness

hitting some ridiculously bad shots borne of tiredness

somehow he has a break point tho...

    come on tf

  • Registered Users Posts: 35,679 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Was Nadal suppose to serve in all that noise, he was waiting for crowd to settle.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,411 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

I'll readily admit that Rafa takes the piss with the time and the towels and the bottles and the bouncing and the picking his hole but that last time violation was bull****. The crowd were roaring.

some pair of balls on medved to face down those match points like that

I think that it's a serious case of Russian stoicism more than anything.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,411 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

    Phew!

Has there ever been a player with a will to win like Nadal. What a man

    ah fook.

Medved is going to win a few slams at least based on that display if he can be consistent.

Such an awkward style of shot to play against and seems to have it upstairs.

One of his toughest matches, the Russian just would not quit
