When did being right wing become a cool lifestyle choice for young adults?

Seems like more and more kiddies are flocking to reactionary, selfish, right wing ideologies.

Are charismatic but low IQ YouTube celebrities to blame?

I blame their socially liberal upbringing. Isnt it always cool to be contrarian to your parents generation?

It was inevitable once corporal punishment was binned.

Around the time Dundrum Shopping Center opened.

Seriously, though - economically, once the Celtic tiger roared, that was it. People had money and they wanted to hang onto it.
    Socially, it's not.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I think when liberals started bullying them in high school.

The number of kids with any political leanings must be as rare as hens teeth.

Most of them that do are members of young FF or FG.

You're suggesting gangs of thuggish left wing children were bullying precious and fragile right wing libertarian primary school students on mass in the early 2000s?

    It's a theory I guess.

    .

I'll never forget the time the week the Dundrum Town Centre opened.
A family on the luas from town at the Dundrum stop saw the old 'Dundrum Shopping Centre' just over the bridge (where Lidl is now) and looked at the row of hum-drum shops, and with that said 'Is that it???' and got off to wait for the next luas back into town!! :D

All these bloody, new-fangled technologies are turning them into snowflakes.

If you look at the popular youth movements of the sixties, say the student rebellions in France in 1968, all of these people were reading Marx, Engels, and were being taught by individuals like Lyotard, Baudrillard etc.

There was a rich intersection between art (Debord) political theory and praxis. Whether you agree with them or not, the level of discussion was much higher. These days you have a Lorraine Southern video sympathetic to white South Africans and an angry poorly formed Paul Joseph Watson rant and the next thing you know you got another school shooting

When they reached an age where they were able to see the liberal horrors that are being pushed as the norm now, thankfully its only a mater before it swings back to the right, hopefully not too far to the right, believe it or not its possible to have opinions, some left and some right tenancies without being a transgender-nazi.

Just like the communist thread there is no sharp rise in far-right politics in Ireland.

A very conservative country yes, but no real threat from Fascist or Nationalists, unlike a lot of European countries that have seen rises in Fascist & neo-Nazi parties & racist attacks.

A bit like how the States are stuck on Cold War politics, Ireland is still very much stuck on Civil War politics. There's been no real normal left-right politics in the South or North of this country. It's usually been stuck on national & sectarian issues rather than economic or social issues.

What were these "liberal horrors" in Ireland?

The censorship by the state? The sexual abuse scandals in the Church? The forced laundry labour homes for "fallen" women scandals? The Tuam babies scandal? The fact the governing party in this country was formed out of a merger with a Fascist organization?

Where are these "liberal horrors"? Plenty of horrors in Ireland, nothing to do with them being liberal tho. Unless Gay marriage horrifies you, which I'm guessing it does?

I think there’s a reaction to the “check your privilege” left, which is a pity as economic (centre) leftism would be a good idea now.

We're lucky in Ireland that the Right Wing "demagogues" are either crackpots (Gemma O'Doherty, Michael Quinn) or un-electable hysterics with a charisma bypass like Barrett.

I think the left has become like the headmistress they all grew up with. Overbearing, bossy and bullying.

Then there is the more farcical issues like insisting the big hairy man in a dress is really a woman.

Not to mention the white man always bad narrative.

Because the left have abandoned left wing values such as workers rights, pay and conditions etc. by supporting a race to bottom through mass immigration. Why do people on the left support immigration when it erodes workers pay and puts pressure on state run public services like healthcare and education.

The modern left support support big business for example Facebook and Google and international finace capitalism. While the right are more likely to support small independent idigenous business.

A much smaller number of people went to university then, the level of discussion could be more verbose.

Conservatism is the new counter culture. The establishment is now left wing, Liberal and bordering regressive in their progressiveness.

The establishment sing the same tune, the media sing the same tune, the politicians sing the same tune. The youth will always rebel against the establishment.

This isn’t really the place for “that”, S. But as you seem so concerned I’ll tell you.

As stated previously, in another thread, I managed to break the “deadlock” before I left. It wasn’t pretty but it was good enough. The tinned pears, though, were a particularly bad idea.

Still had, fairly, bad gas for most of the early evening and had to make two, quick, trips to the “facility” but was, otherwise, unscathed.

Sure, there's always been mad nutters around.

    O'Duffy & the Blueshirts & Greenshirts in the 1930's
Denis Fahey & Maria Duce in the 50's.

I don't think they've ever had mass grassroots support.

Gemma O'D got 1.85% in the European elections.

I live in one of the biggest Urban towns in Ireland & have never seen anyone wearing a yellow vest unless riding a bike at night. What part of the country are you in, maybe it's just your end?

That's not to say there's no real problems. Of course there is huge problems with homeless people & unemployment.

No discernible impact on electoral politics so far though, which is surely what counts. Apart from the Peter Casey phenomenon, but I am yet to be convinced that that represents a serious yearning for Trump-style politics on the part of the Irish voter.

And drug gangs and massive heroin problems in inner city Dublin.

And rampant unemployment and social deprivation which the likes of you have not seen here in Ireland. Clondalkin, Clonsilla, Ballymun etc are paradises now compared to what they once were.

And yeah, more people were killed on the island of Ireland by the Ra than Islamic Terrorists.

But keep on spinning that things are worse now because a few black and brown men have turned up.....

When the mainstream left became utterly toxic, authoritarian, and horrendously bigoted.

Young whites and young men / boys in particular have every legitimate reason to despise the left. And as a lifelong leftist, I'm utterly, bitterly furious at many of my fellow leftists for allowing such bigotry to fester and develop to the point at which we're pushing away a generation which would otherwise be fully on board with what we believe in.

The anger and confusion directed against young right wingers by mainstream leftists is hilarious. They spent most of the last decade telling a lot of these people to hate themselves and expect (and welcome as a form of historical 'justice') being treated like sh!t because of who they happened to be born as, and then they genuinely seemed to be shocked and taken aback when those people decided to vote for the other side instead. It's ridiculous.

Over in the States, I literally saw full forums full of Clinton supporters laughingly mocking young white men who had reservations about the rhetoric coming from some of the more extreme supporters of the left, saying "go ahead and vote for Trump! We don't need you to win!"

Then after the election, they're all like "How could you betray us like this?! How could you let that fascist win the election?"

It just doesn't compute. You can't barrage a whole demographic with generalised bigotry and then expect that demographic to support you at election time. Brexit, same story - months of telling undecided and leave-leaning voters that they were stupid, racist, senile fools, and then after the referendum, months of head scratching and wondering "where did we lose the electorate?"

I started ringing alarm bells about this in my own circle of leftist friends after seeing how some people behaved during the Gay Marriage referendum, and the "you're 100% with us or else you're a subhuman piece of sh!t who should be ostracised from society" mentality which seeped through many campaign groups at the time. I had hoped people would cop on, but as the rest of the 2010s showed, things indeed got far, far worse rather than improving.

    You went way back there.

I think there’s a reaction to the “check your privilege” left, which is a pity as economic (centre) leftism would be a good idea now.

Not that far back, those horrors I listed were only made known to the public since the 90's & 2000's. And even if it happened a century ago (which it didn't) they are still issues that haven't been properly dealt with.

Who is the “check your privilege” left in Ireland?

And modern liberalism isn't a working class ideology either, it's a upper middle class ideology made very popular in the States by the Kennedy's who were wealthy millionaire capitalists who never had to work a day of manual labour in their lives. JFK wasn't this great anti-imperialist leader either, like he's potryared by the mainstream media, he gave the go ahead for Bay of Pigs, and started US military involvment in Vietnam & gave the go ahead for the chemical Agent Orange to be spread across the Vietnamese countryside, which babies are still being born deformed from.

So I have no great love for liberals, but it's a little refreshing to have a slight shift towards some liberal ideas in Ireland since the dark shadow of the Catholic church fell.
