No hors categorie (HC) climbs today but there are three Cat. 1s and a Cat. 2, resulting in 4,345 metres of elevation gain.

The stage started about an hour ago and the pace has been relentless. The break still hasn't formed. Riders are being dropped left, right and centre... and they haven't reached the first categorised climb yet.

Madness nearly 50km done. Nico had a try at getting away and it was brought back again, don't think they got more than 15 seconds.

    Nico trying again

Simon Yates, Bardet and Zakarin are all determined to get into the breakaway today

Crazy some of the names there, Quintana there too. Names you'd normally see in the GC top 10 going in a break. They are looking at each other though.

A break is starting to get away and it includes Quintana, Dan Martin, Nico Roche, and half the Astana team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,506 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

They have a minute lead now

Quintana in a group breakaway and still he doesn’t seem to want to contribute when he has a real chance of regaining time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,506 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

The peloton has completely eased up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,506 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Now is the time for the breakaway to make hay but not enough riders are putting in the effort

Quintana is the real problem for them there in the break. Surprised they aren't telling him to get lost.

If Movistar ride for Quintana in the break then we may see fireworks behind
But they may not have confidence in him

I wish they wouldride as Dan Martin would have a chance of regaining time

I wonder could quintana be there to work for the other 2 for a stage win? They show more promise after yesterday!

Richard Virenque could do with easing off on the croissants
(based on him in the Festina ad)

Nibali, Zakarin and Mollema all going out the back of the breakaway. I wasn't expecting that.

I think what people dont realise is this Tour has been mentally hard

And it is only going to get harder

This is why stamina is very important from now on

Ten Dam : "Everybody is already tired. Mental game has already started at the end of the 2nd week! People dropping from the break and bunch you wouldn’t suspect. Like Mollema Nibali, Martin and Mas. Viviana stepped up."

He's actually doing OK, moving towards the top 10 today which would be impressive from him

The last 3km on this climb look brutal, should give the break another shake up. If quintana gets over this one with 5 minutes then Ineos will have to take it up I would imagine?

Edit Wiggins just siad it's the steepest climb on this tour!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,256 ✭✭✭MPFGLB

    The question is can Ineos

Thought FDJ and LV are better suited after yesterday

You'd think Ineos would leave it as Qukstep's problem no?

A LOT could happen in what's left of this stage, a LOT of fairly unprotected GC contendor's going to have to look out for themselves! Should be some fun viewing!

Simon Yates cruising to another stage. Weird race from him, hiding in the bunch and picking off stage wins. Are his GC days behind him? He's better than this.

His plan was always to come good in week 3 to help Adam, this was siad from the start but as Adam is not going so well he can stage hunt now and maybe get the Kom jersey.

That looks to be the stage win for Simon Yates
