I upgraded yesterday. The new screen is noticeable brighter to me when side by side on white theme. I think the build quality is better too. From day 1 my launch switch had loose joycons and a few rattles, the new switch feels tight, no rattles at all.

I prefer the more Matt finish plastic as well, though that might change as it gets handled over time.

It definitely runs quieter or has the fan on less compared to my original switch.

Happy out so far and think it's worth upgrading, for longer battery alone, but the above is a bonus.

My son keeps asking about this but I was sure there was a catch. His is 18 months old - is it only newer ones they are trading does anyone know? Also he said it has to have a dock but as I am totally oblivious to all things switch I have absolutely no idea what he is at. Can anyone clarify before we haul ourselves to the shop this evening?

It’s been posted several times here. You need everything that originally came in the box. Bring it all in trade it in. Plus €30 and you have a brand new switch

I mean has the new one a dock? And older switches will be exchanged?

Thanks for info. Im not great with stuff like this.

You need all the bits in the image below. New Switch will have all of these as well so you're replacing like with like.

Thank you so much - I think he thought it was to exchange for just purely handheld which he doesnt want to pleased to see it works with the dock too :)

    There's two options:
    1. Trade in current Switch for version 1.1 of the same and pay €30
    2. Trade in current Switch for Switch Lite and get extra store credit, this one doesn't have a dock and is cheaper

    He wants option 1 above.

That's the biggest thing I noticed. My joycons are much tighter to the screen now and the whole thing feels much more solid.

Any noticeable red tint on the newer screen when on whiter backgrounds?

No not at all. When in the shop and side by side with the old one, the old one had a cooler blueish hue, the new a warmer redish hue. Not really on the whites though, more stuff that was already red looked more red. If anything I prefer the newer screen, the other looked too cool/blue in comparison, but I always prefer warmer hue in my monitors and turn down the blues in the evenings so I might be biased.

On its own without the other for comparison it's not noticeable at all. The whites look white.

The battery life is really a lot better. I play almost exclusively on portable. A few stints of Astral Chain and still 50% left.

Is the WiFi module in this still as crap as the original?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,757 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yep I think so. It was quite slow to re-download everything.

I guess I'm asking from a signal strength perspective. My (original) Switch is usually upstairs( 2 floors up) and intermittently has connection problems. For the most part other WiFi enabled devices I have don't have the same issue

I found a tedious workaround at home to speed up downloads on the switch. It's in addition to putting it in sleep mode.

If you have multiple Wi-Fi signals in your house, go into the settings, Internet, select a different network (5ghz preferably) but it will work for 2.4 as well, then watch your download speed settle and increase.

Unfortunately, you might have to do this a few times on larger file sizes.

Not ideal but better than watching the slow speeds when you have a few hundred gb to download :(

got mine today on henry street with a big chip out of the shoulder button and some sticky buttons, they just took it for an hour and tested it. So got a new colour version i had the plain grey

My switch is in the Dock, downloading a 20gb file at 15mbps. Ffs! 1.8mb a second... That's the modern day equivalent of dialup 😭😭😭

They must be rate limiting on their end!

Be thankful for what you have. I live more than 3 miles from the nearest cabinet and still regularly use dial up. No 3 or 4G either and imagine break my heart (hence the occasional dial up experiences). I'd be delighted with those kinds of speeds. Online gaming is just the stuff of dreams.

It's painfully bad. I get 180mb a second download speed on my Xbox One but it took me more than 48 hours to redownload 300gb to my Switch.

Yeah was very slow redownloading the few bits I had on mine too (I don't even have an SD card that's how little it was and still took hours). I'm pretty sure my old switch had normal enough download speeds compared to this.

You won in the end, neon is just far superior. When the Switch was revealed I thought I'd go with grey because I thought the colour variation would bug my OCD, but they're just beautiful in person. Pity they've slowed down bringing out new colours. Wouldn't have minded a new variation for the slightly improved version, or a special edition for Link's Awakening or Luigi's Mansion.

I wonder if we're getting a 'greatest hits' range soon. I want to get my hands on ARMS and Mario vs Rabbids again.

Any reviews of this online yet? Or full comparison to the original?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,267 ✭✭✭✭manual_man

The servers are probably really being pushed, especially with a lot redownloading everything onto their new switch

Is the home button different? Think was less raised
As someone pointed out the joycons feel more attached with no rattle.
Just played Mario Odyssey for a bit since what better way to test the joycons and all. Turns out I'm very out of practice in that game

Yep, feels like a single solid unit.
    Hope it stays that way.
And neon far nicer than grey :)

I stuck with the grey. Think the neon would be too distracting sitting in front of the tv.

I switched to neon... Regretting it now. The toddler thinks it's great to try grabbing and playing with. Completely ignored the grey

Yellow or turquoise switch lite for him so :)

Traded in old Switch plus Mario tennis for new Switch plus screen protector plus 2 quid left over :p downloading is painfully slow but to my mind it’s no slower than when I was downloading recently on old Switch. Servers are obviously under stress at Nintendo’s end but this is something they should really sort out soon
