Assuming the meters include remote reading then I'm very much in favour. I'm rarely home when the meter reader calls and I get widely varying estimates and often get requests to phone in a reading.
Also, the ability to monitor usage during different time periods is useful if you're trying to save energy and money.

But if they use remote reading that means extra of those super toxic dangerous brain melting 5G radio Yokio me bobs!

All that magic UHF wavelength interference will be killing our babies faster than those pesky vaccines and flouride that I keep hearing about!

Next thing ya know they will be putting chem trails in the water and running the gas off the electricity and the electricity off the gas!

I mean FFS won't somebody please! PLEASE think of the children?!?!

    Wait...
Sorry, I meant Gemma! Won't somebody please think of Gemma ;)

Phone in a meter reading? Why not just log it online or through an app? Takes about 20 seconds.

    Any chance of explaining why?

Great idea but previous reports say it will be a poor execution.

In Germany the new meters connect to your WiFi and you can use an app or the website to see your exact usage during any second of any day, including in real time.

The original proposal for the Irish "smart" meters was that they would contain a 2g SIM card and text your meter reading to the ESB once every 15 minutes. The readings would not be viewable by the customer in real time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,168 ✭✭✭Ger Roe

I would be in favour,,, IF the new meters allow consumers to avail of off peak cheap rates (eg they can switch over to night rates) and to sell electricity back to the grid.

If not, then they will just reduce the reading/admin costs for the suppliers and, as usual, we will be encouraged to reduce demand so that we end up paying more, for less usage.

At the moment, I have a €15 induction monitor on my supply and I can see my own consumption rate. I know which of my appliances cost the most to run and I don't need anything fancier, unless it gives me some additional direct benefits in terms of reduced cost options.

    What are the chances

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,292 ✭✭✭Ubbquittious

i suppose this will mean the end of the chape night rate electricity and instead the only time to make savings will be 15 minutes here and there when it's windy and demand is low

I see TLI got the contract for installing the smart meters but what exactly do TLI do when they're not installing meters?

I see their white vans on the road everywhere every day of the week but I never see them doing anything

There will be no upfront charge to have a smart meter installed. Like other meter upgrades, the cost of the meter will be recouped over time in charges paid for use of the electricity network infrastructure.

Sounds like they're going to increase rates to cover the cost of installing these. Or it's included in the standard charge you pay just to have electricity. Free me hole.

I don,t like it when services say use company x app,
not everyone has a smartphone, many people in rural area,s cannot get broadband, so they may not have wifi .
Theres a lot of older people or maybe people who for medical reasons , who cant use a smartphone .
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/05/14/two-million-smart-meters-not-working-research-suggests/

If you switch to another supplier they may not work, unless there is a
plan to make them compatible with all suppliers,

An eircom broadband router wont work on the 3 network .

And the fact that there won't have to be people going around reading meters every few weeks adding onto usage costs as well. So that's a bonus right there.

I'd be broadly in support especially if we can get paid to supply electricity back onto the grid. It would be a huge help in making the cost of installing solar power more economic for the end user.

Both Siemens and Kamstrup have worked together on similar smart meter deployments around the world since 2012. The Irish project is planned for execution during 2019 and 2020, and a state-of-the-art data collection system called Kamstrup Omnia will be combined with the Siemens EnergyIP smart meter data management technology.

“Our industry-leading platform Omnia, used for data collection, and our smart meters OmniPower are based on extensive experience and proven technology,” explained the CEO of Kamstrup, Kim Lehmann.

“Our solution will provide ESB Networks with accurate, reliable and secure data, which is fundamental for ESB Networks to establish a stable and flexible network, and provide good customer service,” Lehmann said.

Looks like most of us will be getting the Kamstrup OMNIPOWER® Single-phase meter - see datasheet (PDF).

You can get plug in modules for them to integrate with your local wifi, not sure if ESB are allowing this.

They were rolled out across Holland as well and I refused it. There's too many open questions about much higher bills.

I’m sure you can refuse to take a meter. However you’ll be charged the standard unit rate.

So they can market extra stuff to you directly or else you'll somehow find yourself on some price plan that gives the rights for them to sell on your profile to third party advertisers hidden deep within the Tees and Cees. Fierce valuable stuff this data nowadays

The ESB will be able to do remote disconnections if you don’t pay your supplier bill. That’s what will have the ‘no way, we won’t pay’ up in arms.

Fierce illegal too with GDPR. Not a chance of that happening.

This is from the UK. (PDF format)

Smart Meters and Demand Side Response

Smart electricity meters are capable of recording half hourly energy consumption data, providing pricing information and enabling remote load control. The GB smart metering system provides access to data through two main routes.

    1. Users of the Data Communications Company (DCC) who have the consumer's explicit consent can access the consumers half hourly energy consumption data, including maximum demand levels.

    2. Devices connected to the smart meter Home Area Network (SMHAN) with the consumer's consent can request electricity pricing and
consumption information from the smart meter up to every ten seconds, which could be sent to other devices in the home or over the internet for cloud storage/analytics.

I have a smart meter since March. Why does the meter reader still call? Am I missing something. We always miss him anyway which is a little inconvenient.

I’d presume it’s because the meter is installed but doesn’t have the mobile chip enabled to enable remote readings and disconnections. Probably physically rolling the meters out while delivering the tech and security in the background so a go-live of a decent number can be announced. Hacking into a smart metering network could cause a huge amount of damage to a country so presume it’s slow and steady with rolllout.

I assumed that why they are installing them , lay off the meter readers save money. Also a way of catching people on the fiddle. I don’t see any issues with them

I have what I presume is a smart meter in my house. I can log into the app at any time and can see a daily break down of electricity usage and costs. Quite handy, as I can see how much home office is increasing usage by doing a comparison with the same days from last year.

because the remote reading infrastructure isn't going live till next year

There will be no remote disconnecting with the present smart meters. Most domestic ESB supply's now a days are 100 amp supply and the physical size of a 80 amp / 100 amp contractor is bigger than the smart meter meter itself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭alex_r

Has anyone figured it out how to connect to it with smartphones or other smart meter readers?
According to the specifications It defo has connection protocols(Kamstrup Meter Protocol, DLSM/COSEM and EN 62056-21 (1107) Mode A & C).
Although, I am not sure if they are available for consumers. For consumers, it seems we might have to install a special CCC(Consumer Communication Channel) module.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭alex_r

Also, mine meter shows Radio Network Symbol on. So, I assume mine has been connected to the 2G ESB Radio Mesh Network already.

These are really advanced meters. Chuffed our island finally has something so tech advanced and not resorted to some quick legacy fixes.

These meter 100% do have a contactor built in.

    From Kamstrup:
"OMNIPOWER single-phase meter is available with integrated disconnection function which makes it
possible to disconnect the electricity meter's supply outputs. The disconnection can be made locally by
activating the meter's push button, automatically via the functions Smart Disconnect or Prepayment, or
remotely via an automatic smart metering system."

Is it true you dont get a night rate with a smart meter.
I have day/night at the moment and im fuxked if im giving that up.
because i charge my solar 7kw battery at night to use during the day during the winter.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Credit Checker Moose

Yes the smart meters have a night rate. Nothing to worry about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭alex_r

Yeah, they have an option of having multiple tariff plans(up to 8).
The tariff indicator can show T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7 and T8 to indicate the currently active tariff. The tariff reading is updated every 10 sec., i.e. it may take up to 10 seconds from a tariff shift has been carried out until the current tariff is displayed.

However, if I am not wrong, it seems like it's up to your provider to support this function. All providers are going to roll out new smart features according to ESB
From 2021 onwards, electricity supply companies will begin to offer new smart products and services, giving you more choice and enabling you to shift some of your consumption to off peak times of the day when electricity is cheaper.
See more information on the benefits of the National Smart Metering Programme.

How would you save anything charging a battery on dual tariff?

    You'd want more switched on

Charge it on the cheep rate and then discharge (when needed) during the expensive rate.
I have it, might as well use it.
