If you need to cover upwards of 200km regularly, i.e. you need the range, you'd very quickly jump ship ;).
But agreed, the eGolf is one of the nicer EVs available, if the relatively short range available is suitable.

Agreed, but I was answering the OP's longest round trip criteria @ 120km, well within the e-golf's range.

I'm waiting for an id3 in "summer 2020". My current car is an '04 Polo and it has just failed the nct on emissions. So much for saving the environment by driving an old car into the ground. My mechanic thinks that there is no guarantee that it can be brought up to standard, so I need a temporary car to bridge the gap to the id3. I'm not confident that I could spot a lemon on the second hand market, do not live near a go car location. Any ideas welcome.

I had a similar decision a year or two back. Seemed easier to me to buy a slightly newer petrol car to fill the gap when I need to replace the second car. Just wasn't (at that time) any cheap used EVs worth getting.

It's RTE... of course there's stupid.

I drive Wexford to Dublin and back on a single charge... During the summer I have 220kms left if I leave on a full charge.

Will RTE ever use the right tool for the job? Well, that wouldn't be good telly/radio now would it?

In fairness, RTE's George Lee was doing his best to fend it off, and he called Amii McKeever nuts.

But anyway, she apparently couldn't make it 120km from Kilkenny to Dublin on a single charge, with the heater off.

No mention of the car, but this is the company that lent her the car http://3cea.ie/

...and they have a pic of what I assume is an e-Golf on their homepage.

The refusal to mention specific makes and models didn't help the debate.

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd wonder who funds this stuff. It's consistent rubbish.
And if you have no other exposure to EV information you'll pick it up just by osmosis.

It is so frustrating to see/hear this from the state paid media.
and still info exists but not acknowledged.

"On a trip from Cork to Derry through the Midlands, I managed a more realistic but still impressive average of 12.8 kWh/100km, allowing to complete the 432 km distance in a single charge ! With 13% or 60km range to spare."

nearly Malin to Mizen and still coming with all excuses possible.

While looking at the e208 website they make this general statement
At 81mph constant speed, the range of a full electric vehicle is halved compared to WLTP.

I dont know how accurate it is but its an acknowledgement that even WLTP isnt anywhere close to reality for higher speed motorway runs.
Cars should really have multipe range stats provided, rather than one that is meaningless. Every car should have a stat for how far it will go at 120km/h.

Definitely, a table of range values at say 60/80/100/120 kph would be very useful. Flat ground, sea level, 20C, no wind.
It would make objective comparison of vehicles much easier for people with varying usage patterns.

That review of the e208 it looks great. It's just a bit on the small size yet again.

I think if you need to be doing constant 80mph runs then an EV is the wrong choice!!

Maybe, maybe not. The main thing is to know what it will do at that speed. You might drive it well within it’s range everyday but need to do a motorway run a few times a year so it’s range at that speed is important to some.

At least there were two people who tried to correct the hatchet job they were trying to portray. The women with the plugin hybrid had done her homework and spoke very eloquently and accurately.

ev-database.org has "highway - cold weather" stats which look about right for Irish motorway speeds.

    e.g. https://ev-database.org/car/1138/Tesla-Model-3-Long-Range-Dual-Motor

Fair play for Peugeot for even stating that. As for how accurate it is, I'd say it depends on the car, or more specific, its aerodynamics. 81mph = 130km/h

In very aerodynamic cars you'd lose less than half, in not so aerodynamic cars you might indeed lose up to half. I'll make this guess (summer temps, ideal weather)

    Ioniq 28kWh - WLTP 200km, at 130km/h GPS speed 150km => 25% range lost
    Leaf 40kWh - WLTP 270km, at 130km/h GPS speed 135km => 50% range lost

I'd say the Peugeot e208 is somewhere bang in the middle of those...

I think the e208 is about 340km WLTP.
I posted a vid recently where a dude in Germany did 200km to turtle mode in an e208 driving at 130km/h so it's close enough to 50% loss.

    140/340 lost = 41%

Pretty close to the middle of the Leaf and the Ioniq :)

I presume that was GPS speed and not indicated, otherwise you'd be right with the 50% loss

In Fact WLTP does this but manufactures will obfuscate the details as much as they can.

You need to search the actual technical details. Speaking of the 208

Go to page 31 and see for petrol/diesel they actually do what you suggest. Unfortunately is not the same for the electric version. I believe they don't have the test results yet. Or they didn't when they made the brochure.

    Nope.

A tesla can do this easily.

Have taken advantage of my current working in Paris situation and the fact that the misses wants to see the El Born to plan a trip to the Geneva Motor Show. Hopefully should be good.

Any EV with very good aerodynamics can easily drive at 80mph / 130km/h GPS speeds without losing too much range (compared to WLTP)

I never drive under 130km/h if I can help it in my tiny battery Ioniq
