Will Leahy is planning a Radio 2 40th birthday programme for the station.

Are there any other tributes / re-union planned?

There seems to be zero interest in this, the station that gave the nation Marty Whelan and Ronan Collins.

Wonder will Dave Fanning have anything about the 40th birthday that weekend as he is the only DJ still there since the birth

But I might listen into 2FM on a weekday (I don't usually listen until Saturday & Sunday mornings) - next Friday to see what they have in store for the top secret show at 9am!

Anyone have access to the article that was in the Indo yesterday about the 40ty Birthday? I’m living abroad and can’t access it

Next weekend the three day Daytripper fest in Waterford will have a 2FM/Radio 2 link up on Friday.

2fm turns 40: What’s next for RTɒs youth radio brand?
It had its heyday in the era of the late Gerry Ryan but as it turns 40, 2fm is chasing a less testosterone-filled schedule. John Meagher asks what's next for the national broadcaster's youth radio brand

It was one of those advertising campaigns that succeeded in being both enormously annoying and hugely successful. It was 1979 and for what felt like the whole of May, the catchphrase 'Radio 2 Comin'atcha!' was inescapable. RTÉ had finally bowed to pressure and was launching a youth-oriented station.
For the entire 1960s and virtually all of the 1970s, pop lovers were ill-served by the country's national broadcaster. The deeply conservative Radio 1 held little appeal and, instead, they were tuning into Radio Luxembourg and the glut of local illegal 'pirate' stations that had sprung up to meet the demand.

So I’ve only seen a clip of them doing something with Gerry Ryan at 9am tomorrow for the 40th anniversary. Is it just Gerry Ryan or will they be mentioning ANY other former radio 2/2fm DJ at all during the day ?

And there's a lot of them out there! Here are some examples:

Radio One: Ronan Collins and Ryan Tubridy

Lyric FM: Marty Whelan and Lorcan Murray

Today FM: Ian Dempsey and Phil Cawley

4FM: Damien Farrelly and Nikki Hayes

Radio Nova: Colm Hayes, Ruth Scott, John Clarke and Liam Quigley

    Q102: Scott Williams

    FM104: Jim-Jim Nugent

East Coast FM: Declan Meehan and Jim O'Neill

South East Radio - Dave Redmond and Alan Corcoran

    WLR - Geoff Harris

Clare FM - Mickey Mac (Michael McNamara)

RTE Gold: Michael McNamara, Will Leahy, Rick O'Shea and Mike Maloney

I think Ray D'Arcy was briefly on 2FM but never got a permanent show.

    What was the question??
I asked during the on air schedule tomorrow on 2fm besides the Gerry Ryan thing they seem to be doing and promoting(which is fair enough as Gerry Ryan was a huge part of 2fm) but he wasn't the only thing on 2fm for the last forty years. I'm not saying get ex DJs who no longer work in RTÉ back on air but I don't know I was expecting something even slightly similar to what BBC radio 1 did during their big anniversary. I mean it's 40 years on air. Did they even acknowledge the 30th anniversary ?

For their 15th birthday in 1994, some former 2FM deejays attended a birthday bash and were interviewed on air.

Here are a couple of more former 2FM presenters:

Enda Murphy -Sunshine 106.8 and 4FM

Pat Kenny - Newstalk. Although he was associated on radio with Radio One, he did present an albums show called The Inside Track on Saturday evenings on what was then called Radio 2.

G Ryan is back this morning.

Some clever editing going on. How have they managed to get him to say “40 years ago today....”

Really eerie. I used to love him giving advice for my JC and LC! Ah you would really miss Gerry Ryan.

Was it a heart attack he had? I remember the day that Ian dempsey had to cover cos he was running late. I had a bad feeling that morning.

Yeah. His breakfast show was extended.

I think it’s the first time I’ve listened to 2fm since around the time he died. I used to take him in small doses. A few weeks at a time. Too much G Ryan got tiring for me. But his subtle brilliance is certainly shining through on this.

Shame he’s getting the weather wrong.

Having listened to Radio 2/2FM over the years my overall sentiment about the station on its 40th anniversary is that

IT HAS NEVER PUT THE LISTENER FIRST.

I vividly remember listening to that that morning thinking that it was a bad thing to be saying even as a joke. She must have felt sh1t when she got the news. Always thought there was good chemistry between Looney and Gerry, almost as if there was more than met the eye!

    It's on Soundcloud now.
    https://soundcloud.com/rte2fm/the-ryan-line-2fm40

If you have a weak stomach, you'd be advised to skip the section (12-20mins approx) where he discusses squeezing spots in minute detail with a caller. It's Gerry at his best/worst, depending on your point of view.

An hour long show is on now from 7-8 about the 40th anniversary of 2fm. I’ve heard Larry gogan and Ian Wilson within ten minutes.

Heart failure aggregated by alcohol and cocaine abuse. Ian Dempsey was already gone from Radio 2, so you’re misremembering. It was Fiona Looney who covered for him.

Interesting guy too. He was the one who decided to bring new bands into an RTE studio and professionally record sessions with them. The first one he brought in - to test how a noisy rock band would work - was U2.

The Ryan Line at 40, was a great tribute and a superb example of dedicated listening and editing. It must have taken many hours and sleepless nights to put together.

Very well done to all involved, it was a fitting reminder of how different radio was when Gerry was on air and I had goosebumps listening to G Ryan mentioning present day references.

A great idea, done really well. I would have been much easier to do something much simpler, but the effort was worth it.:)

Excellent documentary about 2fm on Radio 1 earlier this evening, produced by Will Leahy.

Well worth a listen back :)

Ryan Tubridy did a really good job presenting the 2fm breakfast show, ‘The Full Irish’.

And now that I’ve said that, I’ll get my coat :o:D

The Full Irish might be the only time in Tubridy's career that he was tolerable...
