Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Friend of mine in Holland got his license suspended for 6 months after being caught drunk on his bicycle.
Dont assume nothing will happen with your license just because you are on a bicycle.

I thought it was harsh too at first, although when I thought about it, he was probably all over the road. If someone hit and killed him, they'd have that on their conscience for him being drunk on the road.

Maybe because a beer belly and lycra don't mix?

Idiotic cyclist who deserves to be pulled up and fined.

Why are the cars out in the middle of the lane when there is faster moving traffic coming through? Very inconsiderate :(

In that video cars are taking up lane positions that prevents faster moving traffic from filtering safely.

Where does it say in the rules of the road that you have to leave sufficient space between yourself and cars in an adjacent lane to allow filtering?
You filter when safe to do so and can be done

(don't think he was giving the finger to the beep but to the car you are referring to)

Think you're being baited there as some motorists complain cyclists should move over to let faster traffic through...

Still though, my question was genuine even if it may come across troll-ish. I spend time both driving and cycling and get random beeps and middle fingers the odd time, but only on the bike, and I always wondered was it just a dislike of cyclists.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

It doesn't have to be in the rules of the road, most cyclist will actually move left for cars on faster section of roads even though legally they do not have to.
It just takes some consideration for other road users. The person who posted that video was driving right of the middle of the lane blocking anyone who wanted to safely filter. There was no benefit to taking that lane position.

Because Ireland thinks a painted line a cycle lane makes (look at most other EU countries - tho drivers tend to be more considerated in mainland Europe) which just invokes disdain from both sides

That's just baloney expecting every car to line up perfectly for cyclists to pass thru. Was taught in lessons to always stay left in single lane roads and maintain centralish position in dual+ lanes

On that stretch the left lane is for turning left only, cam car is in right hand lane for straight ahead/right turn.

Yes but is he driving right of the middle of that lane or is his car wider than the bus ahead?

Looks dead center to me, but camera perspective and all. Even if he was more left the cyclist would still be in the wrong to filter to the right

You obviously don't know that road. Left lane is left only.

    Exactly.

It's the dash cam. I was exactly centered. As another poster said, that's how I was taught. Not to go along dual lanes on the very left (or right).

    fritzelly wrote: »

    Yep.

Someone asked why I beeped. I was slowing to a stop in the traffic and the bike appeared out of nowhere. It's reasonable to expect that I can stop when I intend to do so without something appearing right in front of me like that. Fine if bikes do that when vehicles are stopped.

He didn't "appear out of nowhere", nor did He just "appear right in front of you like that".

    Beeping was a dick move.

I guess every driver should be equipped with at least 2 extra pair of eyes, looking out for d1ck cyclists appearing out of nowhere. Like there is not enough sh1t going on the roads already.

Most probably mistaken the lights, but still, I wouldnt risk it to go ahead, when the cars are still going at you.
    From RSA book :
    Traffic Lights
A red light means “stop”. If the light is red as you approach
it, you must not go beyond the stop line at the light or,
if there is no stop line, beyond the light.

A green light means you may go on if the way is clear. Take
special care if you intend to turn left or right and give way
    to pedestrians who are crossing.

Travelling through a small village, stayed at the 50 then 60 then 80km/hr limits out of the village and at all times the 10 DL 520d was literally inches behind my car. Blew my horn as he blew past me than he slammed on just as we hit the 100km/h zone on a bend and brow of a hill. Unfortunatley did not get the reg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,031 ✭✭✭Slippin Jimmy

What an absolute moron! I like to tip along myself. If someone in front of me is doing the speed limit I will never drive on their bumper because the are obeying the rules. If someone is going exceptionally slow it really bugs me, but I never break check them or beep the horn. I will wait for my chance to over take and leave them to it.

You could call Traffic Watch on 1890 205 805 - that's what they're there for. I know people who've been talked to about their driving, although I don't know if anything came of it.

No , I drove like a normal person. I live in this village. I had pulled out from a side road onto the 50 km/h road and he was at least 1/2k away and was up behind me in a matter of seconds. I am not trying to be smart but by you asking that question you are trying to justify in some way what he had done?

Where did I say that? No justification for what he did going by what you say. Some drivers are just knobs, you did nothing wrong and he'll get his dues some day.

The amount of times I was driving in the Mrs' Ibiza with the L plates up (my L plates) and someone would pull out in front of me when they saw I was a learner, only to then drive slower than I was travelling in the first place.......At least you're not stuck behind a learner, though pal, eh?

Happened on the A47 near Uppingham on February 22nd. The truck driver was able to get out by himself, the car driver had to be cut free and airlifted to hospital.

I called traffic watch, Garda rang me a few days later to set up appointment at the station responsible for that area. Brought them in the video on a USB stick, Gard copied it onto the computer in the station, but I let them keep the stick anyway. Also took a statement on what happened which I signed.
