It's emerged that Cillian Murphy is in the running to play James Bond. The next Bond film is said to be Daniel Craig's last.

Personally i think it's an awful choice. I just do not like him. Don't know why just don't.

if they go a new direction with the character it could work. thought they were going for a woman or a black guy next time?

He is tiny in real life. Not sure he could pull off Bond.

I thought that he was very good in Peaky Blinders.
    Interesting choice for Bond though.

well considering only black actors should play black characters i dont even see how you'd have a black JB

Saw him in Toners about 10 years ago. The lad is about 5 foot tall. He might make a good villain though - a tiny little lad with small man syndrome plotting to put a death laser on the moon.

agreed - having a black James Bond would be a clear tick box exercise. Which isn't really needed.

I think it should be somebody relatively unknown so they can make the character their own. Always hard to watch a well know face play a long running character.

James bond films don't work no more in the modern world. The Sicario films are a much better sort of modern state sanctioned black operative "licence to kill" themed movies.

Aidan Turner would be a better fit than Cillian Murphy but I’d take Murphy over that snivelling Cumberbatch lad.

Terrible Bond, but would make a great villain.

bond is supposed to be a 1950's wife slapping, casually racist, center of the universe white man and nothing else.

you know, something to aspire to.

Google says he is an inch shorter than Daniel Craig!

Love Cillian Murphy as an actor, but I think he'd make a far better villain than playing Bond.

Wikipedia has him as 1.75 metres which is a good bit more than 5 feet.

    He has nice eyes though...
I Love his strut... a confident man.
Knew him when I was in college in Cork in the 90's he was great at mimicking people, had people in knots.
Everyone in the circle knew he had a future in the arts....

Only met him a few times, but he's a guy who one wouldn't forget...

And before anyone asks I wasn't in Sir Henry's the night Nirvana played, for some strange reason only 30 people showed up but yet half of Cork were there that night....

    Tom Cruise. Jack Reacher.

think he could be a good choice for a dark Bond, good actor IMO

I'd completely agree having a relatively unknown actor but i don't think they'd go for it. They'd want a big name to get the numbers.

I don't see how that'll be an issue. Bond movies are not set in a specific time with reduced minorities, at different social levels. An actor with a means to portray the character how the director is looking to develope the movie should be it.

I'd argue against a woman doing it, as that suggests it's not possible to develope a female character.

I heard Idris Elba mentioned a while back before Craig signed on for another film, I reckon he would make a good Bond. He can pull off the suave Englishman thing but he's tough enough looking that it wouldn't be silly seeing him bash heads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 491 ✭✭B_ecke_r

ridiculous to have a Black Bond IMO

then there will need to be a Hispanic Bond, Asian Bond, Female Bond.

Bond is White. what's the big deal?

this isn't an episode of Barney the Dinosaur

I don't think so. James Bond is Fictional. He can be whatever one wants him to be really? Just because bond was created in the 50's doesn't mean he has to stay there.

but that's his character. imagine trying to make the below characters white

    Axel Foley
    Apollo Creed
    Red from Shawshank
    Jules from Pulp Fiction

all "Fictional" but they're all definitely black in a remake

Doesnt matter who plays him now, they stopped being Bond films some time ago, once they cast somebody that can somehow suck all the fun and mischief out of the genre even further.

Tom Hiddleston would make a decent Bond too. Given, he might be just a bit too young for it.

    Good God I hope not.

That populist schick was deployed with Ghostbusters 2016 and that was a total laughable disaster.

All the actors who played James Bond have been over 6 ft with the exception of Daniel Craig (5'11).

IMO Cillian Murphy is just too small at 5'9.

I do see your point but keeping Bond the same character is getting boring.

He's also been played by English, Scottish and Irish actors. I don't see the problem here as long as the character at it's core remains the same.

Wasn't Red from Shawshank a white Redheaded Irishman in the original short story? Hence the name Red?

    Core Values of Bond:
Has to be easy on the eye to warrant all the ladies
Big and tough enough looking to whopp a$$ at the drop of a hat
    Look daycent in a suits
Be able to handle the sauce

If they went back in time and made the movies more slap stick type where bond fights 15 guys and comes out with a scratch or a hair out of place then they could pick anybody really

If they continue with the current vibe - copying the Bourne franchinse - then they need a specific type.

Maybe a Tom Hardy type (Although he was absolutely terrible in an absolutely terrible movie Venom)
I doubt he would sign up to knowing he would be bond for the next 15 years but may be an interim bond until they find the right guy for the long haul.

Would you have ever noticed Stallone is a mere 5' 9½"? Admittedly muscular but amazing what the right camera angles and a pair of platform shoes can do. I never thought any of his action roles suffered because of his stature, poor acting and script, yes.

    Could do.

I've always thought you could stick a woman into a remake of diehard or a bond movie and it could work. You'd need the right actor, director and script. Unfortunately hollywood would probably go for Melissa Mccarthy.

For example, the problem with the ghostbusters remake wasn't that there were women in the roles, it's that it was a mediocre script to start with.

Bond could be any race at all. The key thing about bond is that he's british. It would be silly to have a bond who wasn't british. can you imagine some guy in a chinese accent asking for a vodka martini.

Well that's embarassing. Red was an older Irishman in the book, it was felt that Morgan Freeman was perfect for the role so the character became black. And is now apparently an indelibly black character :D might want to take that one off your list...

Murphy is small but he's intense physically, saw him onstage last year and he seems like a tank even though you know he's not. He good be good as Bond and he'd be great as a villain. Signing up as Bond is basically signing up to do very little else for several years though, I don't know if that'd suit.

Beverly Hills Cop was originally mooted as a Stallone vehicle, scripts get rejigged all the time to suit recasting, characters are malleable.
