I thought Carty did very well tbh.

We lost our entire backline shape really once Bundee went off. Has Farrell played at 12 since arriving back on these shores? And Earls just isn't a top tier international 13.

I'm not sure Byrne would have done any better than Carty

Didn't Carty just get on for 2 mins at the end??

I am basing that on the few minutes he was on. A nice half break and a few passes taking the ball on at good pace.

I'm not saying he lit it all up

The game against Italy was made for someone like Ross Byrne. Play a little deeper, bring in our wings a bit more with some accurate, strategic kicking and keep the forwards motoring with a shorter passing game from first off the ruck.

We just need to live with France for 20 minutes while they blow their load and then capitalise as their error count rises. Hopefully we'll take it to them from the off but I've little fear of them especially away from home.

    What about our error count?

yeah that was a big issue which meant 3 different positional changes, which really F'ed us up TBH.

however, theres not much we could have done about it once we go we two specialist positions on the bench.... and that seems to be the way most teams go.

wales played with no back 3 cover on the bench, whilst england went with no center cover (though farrell moving out to 12 isnt a huge loss).

France didnt go with a 9.5 which they sometimes do, and instead opted for medard on the bench, where penaud could have come inside.

earls as center cover on the pitch seems to be the choice, until addison is up to international standard, i think.

Fair enough. Personally, I think it's far too short a period to be drawing any conclusions, one way or the other.

Ah yeah I was just being nice, I'm not saying Jack will have a 40 cap career based off that.

Just as far as very brief cameos go on debut, it was pretty good

I think this eventuality was a big part of the reasoning behind trying Henshaw at 15. He covers the centres and we have a Joey and Conway/Larmour on the bench.
any other setup means we're light on 12 cover.

I do have to ask, why did he kick the ball away at the end? It was a very good kick, but not what was needed from the last play of the game. Now you be fair Italy ran it back, won a penalty which they missed and then Stockdale almost ran the length of pitch so it has kind of been forgotten about. We will put it down to nerves I guess.

Since Aki became eligible Ireland have played 18 tests. He has played in 15/18 - all starts. 2 of the 3 he missed were Fiji and USA. Even accounting for injuries I think it's pretty mad that anybody is in any way sure that he's going to suddenly be displaced from the team.

I'm talking everyone injury free! It's a shoot out between Henshaw and Aki. Aki is benefiting from Henshaw's dubious health and fragility.
Obviously, Aki is in the drivers seat and rightly so. Henshaw has to regain form and health and then maybe he can take the 12 shirt back.
Aki deserves his caps, no doubt! I think he's more durable and he's always going to be in the mix. Henshaw can't stay healthy.

You watch too much porn Venjur. I suppose each time Stockdale scores you call it a money shot...

Just need to do what Leinster done to Toulouse.....wasn't it 30 phases or so early in first half, they never recovered after that....every break in play they rolled onto the ground....

Henshaw is too good to be left out, but against England Aki had the 12 shirt and Henshaw was tried at 15. There is very little between them, they both offer different things but are equally effective, but at the moment it appears the jersey is Aki's to lose.

Dubious Health and Fragility? Come on, have you seen the collisions? The constant pressure to steal ball? The days of Jamie Heaslip like health are over. Aki is amazingly resilient but even he will suffer, like everyone else, it's just the nature of modern rugby.

Not sure how you conclude that. Apart from the single experiment of Henshaw at 15, both being fit, has Aki every been selected by Josef ahead of Henshaw ? Surely its only the opposite we have seen ?

The most interesting part of that essay was revealing that he seems to be more concerned about neither Larmour nor Conway being quite the capable backup cover for Rob that the rest of us thought.

The only occasion I can recall when both were fit and Ringrose was fit at the same time, Aki started 12. When both were fit and Ringrose wasn't, Bundee started 12 and Robbie 13. Perhaps the second test in Australia is the only occasion I can recall where Henshaw was preferred, and I think Joe mentioned rotation at the time.

Either way, Henshaw can't seem to string a healthy run together.
Same can be said about Ringrose, I guess.
Aki is fit, he's doing well.
Henshaw may be tested at fb? I don't think he's good enough or the best option at fb.
I think Larmour, Addison and Conway are worth the effort. Larmour has played fb quite a bit for Leinster and he has been good.
It's amazing that still Kearney is basically locked in at fb!
    On to France!

Interesting stuff. Looks like Cronin is shouldering the blame for Rome.

    Good news re: Ringrose anyway.

Henshaw pulled out of the Scotland game after suffering a dead leg. Seems like he's been out for a long time for such an injury though.

Wait, I thought Carberry was injured?

Dead leg is a very vague term for muscle damage. This has come up a few times before with players and can be anything from a week to 6 weeks. It’s a bit like “stinger”.

Jack McGrath probably taking his chance up in Belfast to go look at houses with Cronin

If Carty isn't released to Connacht, and isn't on the bench for Ireland, I will be like a demon.

Roux and Dillane starting for Connacht, Beirne with Ireland. Think that's a strong indication as to who will be in the 19 jersey next week.

Carty not released but that's surely no surprise. If there's a chance that Carbery will be available for Wales, they'll keep him around and the Irish medical team will work with him. Carty will surely be on the bench next week.

    Follow-ups from ROC;
Stander is training, SOB not present. Dan Leavy is there but not training, whatever that means.

John Ryan in for Munster. Tadhg Beirne retained by Ireland.

Munster players in Ireland camp and unavailable this weekend: Tadhg Beirne, Joey Carbery, Andrew Conway, Keith Earls, Chris Farrell, Dave Kilcoyne, Conor Murray, Peter O’Mahony, Niall Scannell and CJ Stander.

    Why?

They obviously had/ have doubts over Carberry so they've right kept Carty in reserve.

    Cooney back with Ulster.

Jordi Murphy starting for Ulster too. I reckon Stander is going to be starting the France game.
