The build your own world was much more in play then. There were a lot of generalised large sets of bricks with little or no instructions for particular models(and specialised bricks were rare). It was also less gendered funny enough. And of course there were no movie franchise tie ins either. And it was aimed entirely at kids. Today it's far more about build to instructions specific models and aimed more at adults and "collectability" and display.
The move towards so many specialised bricks in the 90's almost drove the company to bankruptcy. So much so that it's rumoured that nowadays a designer looking for new pieces to be developed has to stand in front of the board of directors to justify it!

The early licensed Star Wars and Harry Potter tie-ins are pretty much credited with having saved the company.

Personally, I find it a great hobby to share with the kids. A routine has been established whereby we do every second page of the instructions.

Well, apart from spending a disgracefully unproductive amount of time trawling through and posting up your opinionated rants and musings here on boards, what hobbies/leisure pursuuts do you indulge in?

Come now - don't be shy! :) Anything interesting or unusual?

I used to have hobbies, but then got a wife and kids.
Now my hobbies are fixing things they break or have to have and hiding in the garage so that I don't have to fix things.

I have to say this thread is informative, you can spot those retired, definitely single and childless, those who are probably hoarders and those that could have been in an episode of Father Ted. ;)

I've a few bits and bobs C. Tailwheel(same one fitted to FW190's), compass, altimeter(both from a known example shot down in the Battle of Britain), petrol gauge, injectors, ammo transport box for the BK 37mm shells as used by the JU87g Cannon bird/Panzerknacker, Junkers works assembly plans and a compass and a watch worn by a Stuka pilot.

It is so tempting ... no have to be good.

Funny enough... Ah no I've a few bits and bobs there too.

Though the Stuka ammo case is my laptop table I'm typing this on(and wine box. Takes twenty odd bottles very nicely) and I have a U-Boat crew eggcup. Yep. And a beer glass from the Graf Zeppelin(scary thin and light it is too)

    Ehhh What ?
It's a good thing you weren't alive back then or by christ you wouldn't have left a thing for anyone else once you arrived in France after D day.

I am not allowed discuss …

No excuse Sir. The stuff collection/hoarding is in the genes in my family. One uncle who has six kids, has a collection of interesting things that rivals a small museum, another with five kids has that and is channeling Jay Leno as far as his classic car collection goes. T'is I disease I tells ya. :D

    :D

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.
