What about the last ten years? It's more recent data so would give us a better picture of the current trend. I'm gonna say that the growth in gangland violence and gang wars has led to the increase in the number of murders in Ireland.

I take your point and I have no doubt that people got away with murder but there has still been a large increase in crime, it would be foolish to think otherwise.

Is it not the case that plenty of people emigrated never to return in the earlier half of the last century? How easy could it be to say someone had run away or caught the boat? Obviously this would be within families though, so who knows how many or few that could account for.

I think it was probably much easier to cover up a murder than it is now.

There were 7 murders in 1951 and 91 in 2017. That is an explosion in murder rates.

Does it include those who died in the care/at the hands of the various Catholic institutions around the country? I would imagine the numbers don't reflect full disclosure of those deaths.

I assume that would be manslaughter and not included in murder stats.

Accuracy in reportage. Lots of local feud related killings would have been euphemised in the past, just as suicides are to this day in some places.

There is not a hope in hell there were only 7 murders in any year of the 1950s. Add another 20 covered up, at least.

Anecdotally I have noticed in the news a huge rise in foreign national murder incidents. Maybe that is not surprising when those that come here from easter European countries are from their working class/underclass.

They weren't murdered. There was high infant mortality rates back then even in well fed farm families. When the mother isnt cared for by the father and there was poor nutrition what sort of results do you expect?

I don't think being working class automatically predisposes you to a bit of murdering.

Back in the day when a farmer shot a vagrant dead it wasn't national news as "no one" knew. A bit like all the dead babies.

The other thing is that most people were dirt poor so there was little scope for killing someone while nicking the keys to their car.

You saying they just buried the body and the police weren’t involved?

These are all fairly speculative. I can’t see a man killing his wife and getting away with saying she went away or emigrated for very long.

Homicide has probably increased. 7 per year in a population of 3 million is extraordinary low by world or historical standards. It’s still fairly low today, if about ten times higher.
