Why is Netflix so terrible

I know this is a trivial annoyance compared the grand scale of things but I really wanted to vent about this and im interested in other peoples thoughts.
I finally gave into the hype and recently signed up for netflix, ive been registered for about 3 weeks now. Having signed up ive been wondering why there is so much hype around netflix, in my opinion, it is dreadful. Most of the movies are for children and teenagers, the few that arent, most of them are really not good movies, if I had nothing better to do I dont think id watch even half of them.
The documentaries are, uninteresting and often years old and dated, some of them I remember watching on channel 4 and BBC before we all had to get sky boxes, I havnt sat down to watch tv in years!
I thought it could redeem itself a little when I saw they had put up some David attenborough documentaries, I could listen to him all day, I love him and find him very engaging but netflix seem to have somehow managed to find his very few most boring documentaries that he's made and put them up for our viewing.
And whats this about only some countries getting Derry girls? Surely Irish netflix should get Derry girls, no?
Is this just me? Is netflix actually great and im the one missing out?

A lot of good stuff has been added in the last few months. Lots of really good old and classic films. Netflix originals are generally not that great though overall in my experience.

    I Find Netflix quite good.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

Their movies aren't too great but the series they have are amazing! try starting of with Narcos.

You are missing out on countless great shows, movies and documentarys on Netflix.

I have had Netflix for 7 years at this stage eg the 1st day it started in Ireland. I have used it nearly every day since I got it.

I have seen it change from painfull TV and crap movies to some of the best TV I have seen over the past few years.

Give it time look into what netflix oringals have came out over the last few months and start there. I watched YOU (TV show) there over the last 3 days and loved all 10 epps of it. Look it up might be something you fancy?.

I pay 14 euros a month for the 4k Netflix and its hands down fantastic value for money and i have never felt ripped off for paying it

Narcos is very good. Depending on which region of Netflix you have the content can vary, but I have always found the selection very good.

To the OP I suggest that you have a read of the following thread as well:

Lots of good recommendations on there.

If Maniac is on Irish Netflix give it a watch, 10 part series
Glow is a super fun show
    Lost in Space isn't bad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭wakka12

Agree tbh, hardly ever find anything I like on the irish version at least

A large number of the movies are just terrible beyond belief, almost like parodies, why even put them up? I think most would prefer quality over quantity in this case

it could be a lot better. ive a feeling that we're fobbed off with a lot of cheap netflix originals rather than some good films/tv shows.

    Aye. Well worth a goo.

"Dark" (German with subs) is good as well. "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones" are - despite the expectations the genre might engender - intelligent, watchable and adult fare. "Mindhunter", "altered carbon" and "godless" are worth the time as well.

(I've no idea whether or not these are on irish netflix though)

Did we ran out of stuff to rant about already?

Damn, I love Netflix, using it pretty much since it started out in Ireland. We dont even have RTE channels anymore. Netflix is more then enough for us.

Dont have Netflix myself but my mate does and from what Ive seen its not great with regards to movies (I believe its much better for tv shows?)

What other streaming services (legal) are available to Irish residents? Is it a case of them having a sort of monopoly over certain regions that they dont bother providing more and better movies there?

Amazon Prime, but like Netflix it's another watered down version for this region.

The Netflix originals are usually very well made and cost a bomb to make. I prefer them to other movies/series

Why is there a difference between the Irish version and whatever. Why is it not like Spotify?
Seems daft but we still sign up to it. Sh*t like that pi**es me off.
I get it for a few months then cancel as once I watch what I want there isn't much else to look at

Netflix is amazing, far better than having sky, check reviews of stuff before you watch and you'll find that in amongst some crap there's lots of top quality tv. I've just started the last kingdom.. amazing so far.

Just awful films that went straight to dvd and bargain bins or they will show “blockbusters” that we have all seen 100x in the last 20 years

I always check the IMDb reviews and seem to always be around 3-5

Documentaries are ok, can’t be arsed sifting through the boring ones

Used to only watch the international films category , even that has got quite **** too

Apart from all of the stuff I've watched on that I've enjoyed and all the stuff I have yet to watch, Netflix isn't up to much.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,070 ✭✭✭Franz Von Peppercorn

It’s not really about movies - although there are some good ones. In terms of series it’s excellent.

Also. You don’t have to use it.

Netflix isn’t really watered down anymore. And amazon is way worse.

I find it great value, €14.99 a month and there's myself and 3 cousins watch it probably daily between us. For one person the lower plans are probably still good value even when you consider how much more the US version etc. have.

I'd pay slightly more for the US catalogue if it was an option.

By contrast my Mam has Sky installed in the house as well and I'd watch that about half as much (pretty much only the sports) yet it's nearly €100 a month. She gets the value from it but that's mainly because Netflix is an alien concept

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,807 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

The reason it doesn't have all the shows that the US has is licencing for our much smaller population of subscribers. I.E it doesn't pay them to show them here.

So much for t'interwebs being the great global leveller. It has great shows, but saw most if not all the ones I'm into already. The rest are ****ty kids shows, the usual 3rd Reich documentaries and ****ty straight to DVD Bollywood stuff.

I wanted to watch Babylon Berlin....googled...great it's on netflix...then not appearing on MY netflix wtf?

Is it illegal to talk about illegal streaming?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,111 ✭✭✭Mr.Wemmick

Lots of surplus crap movies on Netflix for sure, but I have seen some great series and documentaries so on balance it is not bad at all.

The Keepers is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. The Staircase is also excellent.

TV series: The Alienist, The Dark, Stranger Things, The Haunting of Hill House and The OA to name but a few.. oh, and Star Trek Discovery.. and Black Mirror.

Not illegal but not allowed on boards.

I don't think VPN use to get around Netflix geostrictions is at all illegal, but still not allowed to be discussed in detail here I believe.

The broadcast rights are sold by region. The op mentioned Derry Girls - channel 4 aren't going to sell the rights for UK and Ireland to Netflix as it would stop people using their streaming service to watch it. Similarly there are US shows that are available straight away here (Riverdale, better call saul etc) that are only available later on (if at all) on US Netflix.

Same goes for movies, certain channels will have exclusivity deals for their regions

By the way, there are differences between countries on Spotify, for bands that have different labels in different countries, but is much rarer

I recently signed up for an IPTV sub and had planned on ditching Netflix if I was happy enough with it. While I'm delighted with the sub I'm still going to keep Netflix. Dead handy for movies and TV series. Big fan of some of their originals like The Haunting of Hill House, Stranger Things, etc.

Combined they cost me just over €20, well worth it compared to a Sky sub costing €100+, even if the interface is many times better than anything you'll find on IPTV.

    TLDR; I like Netflix.

If you are a fan of foreign language, art house or just plain classic B&W films it is seriously bad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

I had to get rid of it. There's good stuff on there but it is absolutely swamped by mostly low grade Netflix original content. It can be hard to find good older movies from the 80's/90's/2000's on it. They used to have a lot more.

Might go back after a few months but it just seemed filled with trash that I've zero interest in.

It’s not really a movie streaming service anymore. In fact that’s never going to happen anywhere in one place again because the studios are all going to have their own individual streaming apps.

You're using it wrong op, netflix is only to be used in conjunction with chill.

I will say that the preview/autoplay is an absolute pain in the hole and apparently it can't be turned off. You should have to select the thumbnail to get a preview not simply stay on it for a second!!

Youtube Premium is worth a shout too. I’ve had it for the last couple of weeks and there’s some great original content on it, as well as ad-free YouTube and YouTube Music streaming service that rivals Spotify and ITunes!

OP it took me a while to get into the whole Netflix thing, and admittedly most of the content on there is stuff I’m not interested in, but there’s definitely the odd series or movies on there that make it worthwhile.

I have Sky but I haven’t watched anything on it in a long time, but it’s still handy to have it, and I’ll be upgrading to Sky Q in a few weeks which will basically mean I’ll be able to intergrate all the above streaming services, plus a couple of others like the RTÉ Player - just watched a great documentary there on the story behind ‘Old Town’ and Phil Lynott, so still some good stuff on RTÉ too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,799 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Netflix is great 99% of the time. If theres a specific movie I really want to watch but isnt on there, i will just get that on Google Play movies with some of my excess phone credit that would go to waste anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭Pinapples

    What?

For the money it *&+£s all over anything we've ever had before in Ireland.

Saorview is a joke, and Sky is utter trash.

Nah there’s some decent stuff on there alright. Origin was alright, I’ve just finished it, and there are some other series on there. I know what you mean though about gaming videos and stuff the kids watch like when it was YouTube Red. It’s more or less the same principle as Netflix - a lot of faff, but the odd gem makes the sub worthwhile.

I find it good for series, totally addicted to Narcos, best thing since the sopranos. But now with everybody else is trying to get on the streaming bandwagon expect the media market to get very watered down between the various services.

The content isn't great on Netflix but what I find amazing is how bad the user interface is. It's absolutely terrible for searching for anything. You get a few default genres and the rest is just shown as recommended. It's quite hard to actually find new stuff to watch on it. I've often come across the odd pretty big movie I had no idea was on it until I actually searched the name directly.

Then there's the ridiculous matter of scrolling down through recommended, featured, watch again, because you watched Glenroe 2 years ago crap to get to the "Continue Watching" list to get back to what you were watching.

For the leading site for online movie content and one of the most visited sites/apps in the world they really went cheap on the front end development.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,485 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

It's a crap interface for anyone actually looking for something specific, but a good one for the casual of casual (which accounts for the overwhelming majority of Netflix subscribers who have no problem being regurgitated similar viewing habits) which is why it's not an issue that needs resolving.

Unfortunately, I tend to fall into the first category and tend to have to have an idea of what I want to watch before even loading it up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,736 ✭✭✭Irish Guitarist

They have a load of crime documentary series' that are all the same. The actual story might be interesting but there are far too many episodes with too many minute details and they never come to any real resolution. Making A Murderer, The Staircase and The Keepers could all have been a couple of hours longs and been just as good or better. The worst one was about some spy that fell from a hotel room window. It went on for about six episodes. I can't even remember the name of it.

There are a few sci-fi series I like on it. Travelers is pretty good. I have no idea how the likes of Stranger Things is so popular though.

Another thing is that you could be waiting years for the next series of something to appear. I watched the first four series of Person Of Interest a couple of years ago. There's a fifth series but Netflix still haven't gotten it. They can also just delete something at any time. I started watching Breaking Bad and when I got to the fifth series I discovered the first five or six episodes had been taken down. I got around it by watching it on American Netflix on my laptop.

If your main interest is documentaries you should try Discovery Stream. You can get a free months trial before you start paying for it.
