The new Skoda Scala. I guess that's the end of the Rapid?

    Looks decent enough.

    That’s actually decent looking.

That's actually quite nice. Wonder will there be a VRS version. Even a sportsline version with 180bhp plus would be very tempting.

They have configurator up that let's you play around with colour and wheels and see the interior options.
Always really liked the Skoda race blue colour but the new Energy blue is very nice.

Front looks like the new Hyundai i30, back looks like it was lifted off a Volvo V40.

Expect to see a load of them in white (with hubcaps) on rental fleets next summer.

    edit; that's the stuff..

    VRS?

    - the V on the VRS to RS (petrol) and it’d be a really cool car.

I think it looks quite nice. LED headlights as standard, probably some other nice things as standard too. Shame about the manual handbrake. Curious to see where this fits in the VAG lineup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Important to note that it’s a 100mm longer and 20mm taller than the current Golf, it’s only 5mm narrower.

There’s a lot of talk of how the new Seat Ibiza is the same size as a Mk3 Golf was, but the Scala is over a foot longer.

It’s also considerably more expensive than the Rapid, with starting prices supposed to be from £17k (Sterling) which is the same as an entry Octavia costs.

I would see this as more a Focus rival with the Octavia being offered as something with a huge boot, the Octavia will most likely make the inevitable push upwards too in its next incarnation.

Yeah the next Octy will officially compete in the D segment I think. At the moment it almost does.

They already have the Superb in the D segment though. Pushing the Superb closer to the premium segment is a risky game given it just doesn't have the badge. Other mainstream manufacturers have tried and failed at that many times and with the D segment continuing to shrink in favour of SUVs I just cannot see it working outside of China maybe.

I was looking forward to Scala as they showed off that Vision hot hatch hybrid. Now that I sow it, I am a bit disappointed.
The biggest engine you can get is 1.5tsi with 150hp.
It looks a bit bland and increase in price goes too.. On the other hand, you cant argue with its size.
As mentioned above. It looks like skoda made a model to compete with their own line up. And if its so closely priced to octavia, then who says it won't suffer same fate as VW jetta.

There are a lot of new cars coming out in next two years and Mazda 3 is the one I look forward myself. Scala is just a bit too bland in current state.

I can live with it once Skoda do a proper RHD conversion and have it next to the driver as opposed to the passenger.

Speaking as an Octavia owner who's quite happy with the car otherwise.

Shades of its cousin the seat leon to me.

It could be that they'll drop the Superb altogether and make a larger Octy the flagship. They've got the Scala, the Rapid and the Fabia below it so they've got their bases covered.

The Scala is replacing the Rapid.

Base model is €23650, so this is 1500 more than a base Octavia and 1150 more than a base Golf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,481 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

New Octavia will most likely jump in pricing too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

What exactly is the point of the Scala? Apart from LED headlights as standard what does it offer over the 3 other cars VAG have in the 20-30k segment?

I wonder will this have better offerings than the VWs. Polo is 95hp, Ibiza is 115hp and briefly had 150hp. Leon got 150hp before Golf. Less DSG offerings now, 1.5 only in the Golf for example. It's all a bit arseways at the moment.

It's the replacement for the Rapid. Its meant for someone who needs something bigger than a Fabia but smaller than an Octavia. The next generation Octavia will probably increase in size as well as price. Skoda always kindo of positioned their models sizewise above their VAG counterparts.

That’s for the Ambition spec they don’t have pricing for the active spec which will be cheaper than the Golf.
    Price list here.

Still seems a little over priced It’s dearer in top spec than a 1.5 tsi DSG Leon Fr and has worse spec

It’s a C segment car to compete with Ford Focus and the like. Octavia always fell slightly between classes and the next gen will be bigger and pricier again. Engine options listed in price list. Looks like the LED headlights aren’t standard either only in the Style spec. Lack of electronic handbrake would put me of too. Maybe the Vrs hybrid will be worth a look.

Seat vw and skoda all have a super mini, compact, saloon, small suv and large suv.

Octavia will remain almost identical in size in 2020.

Both cars sell very well with superb sales up in 2019.octavia slight decrease but largely level.

Don't see any need to Change?? Just refine and improve.

The Octavia will have to jump at least 5 grand though to put it clear in a different segment to the Scala.

It's very expensive. I wouldn't ever consider it even if it is good.

It's in a different segment through the car type. A good quality golf focus rival. You don't need to make an octavia 5k more expensive!?!

Had a look on the configurator last night, it's certainly pricey especially if you add a few extras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

    Looked on the config there:

Scala Style (non metallic, standard wheels)
    1.5 DSG
    Keyless
    Adaptive Cruise
    Auto Light Assist
Nav System (for upgraded screen & virtual cockpit)
    Winter Pack
Park Assist (not sure about camera)
    Ambient Lighting
    €33,352

Octavia Style (non metallic, standard wheels)
    1.5 DSG
    Keyless
    Adaptive Cruise
    Heated Seats
    Ambient Lighting
    LED Headlights
Parking Sensors (no park assist, not sure about camera)
    Auto Lights
    Virtual Cockpit
    Tinted Windows
    €35,516

    Golf Highline
    1.5 DSG
    Tech Pack
    -Camera
    -Nav
    -High Beam Assist
    -Heated Seats
    Park Assist
    Keyless
    LED Headlights
    €35,724

Personally I'm not a fan of Skoda interiors, they aren't as nice as Seat which in turn aren't as nice as VW. I'd argue the Leon facelift isn't far off the Golf interior. Both Skoda's also have manual handbrake. Leon also offers LED headlights standard on the Xcellence/FR trims so it's not even exclusive to the Scala.

A large majority of people buying these cars aren't going for that spec, but even on the lower trims I don't think there's much difference between them all.

Its smaller than an Octavia and currently 1500 more expensive. Who the **** would buy it at that price?

Hence the thought that the Octavia would need to be about 3 grand or more than a scala.

Well a porsche is smaller than an octavia.....

If skoda are going to just slap 3 to 5k on the price of an octavia in such a competitive market they might be in for a shock ré sales.

It's a value family saloon and taxi, take away the value and many other cars start to look equally appealing. We will see though.

Yeah, cos thats the same as comparing 2 similarly prices Skodas.....

BTW, Porsche make more than 1 car.

If a Fabia cost the same as the Octavia , how many would sell?

Just like the Jetta is smaller and cheaper than a Passat.

Theres no point to the Scala if it costs more than an Octavia.

Changed it to say not a fan of Seat, Skoda better interior then the Leon.

Maybe it's down to personal preference but I just don't like the gloss black on the Skoda climate control area, it looks a bit cheap looking. The whole climate control and centre console on the Leon is nicer design wise in my opinion. Dials are less glossy and look a bit nicer.

Splitting hairs though, not a huge difference between them.
