Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

On a side note Alex Payne is a wonderful professional.

Well, they're not. Not even close.

It's a best team of the year award. Does anybody here really think they were the best team in the world?

also happy with Andy Farrell , glad we have him and he's not gone back to England to coach

He's going to be leaving a legacy that won't be undone. As I said earlier - it's been a privilege.

A pretty unique decision. But fitting that Joe's last action as coach is a curveball. :)

    Really? I'm amazed.

This might sound weird, but I think this is the best outcome. We get to move on to the next phase, and see what life is like without Joe. But we won't have the gut sinking feeling of seeing him coach the all blacks and turning them into an unmovable force.

Would have liked to see take over the ABs personally, albeit agree that would be very bad for everyone else. Regrettable that his family commitments are so serious he is unable to.

    no mention of retiring there

    It's in the IRFU's statement:

"Joe Schmidt has today announced that he will finish coaching following the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year. Andy Farrell will become head coach after the tournament. Speaking about his decision to finish coaching Joe Schmidt said: 'I have decided to finish coaching and will prioritise family commitments after the RWC in 2019.'"

No, its a team of the year award. Team of the year can be about progress too. A nomination can certainly be about progress. Arguably the SA nomination was about progress, because on merit both Wales and England would be ahead.

The US are nowhere near the best team, but they have been one of the most impressive performers given where their baseline was.

What is the highest honour the Irish state can bestow on someone?! We owe Joe (and his family) a huge debt of gratitude. From his services to the education system, Leinster, Ireland and the knock on effects felt across all provinces. I don't think anyone has given more to this Island in terms of sporting development and achievement.

    Thank you Joe.

We still have him for the best part of a year and Farrell and his coaching staff will spend that time learning as much as possible. Would hate for his legacy if we banana skin in the quarters again but with him I doubt it.

Given he is all consumed by coaching in Ireland I'd say a sensible man not to take the All Blacks and live under that microscope. Very best to him and his family whatever is next.

This. It is very clear he is finished coaching, not just Ireland. Whether he can be tempted back in years to come remains to be seen but right now he is finished coaching to priotise his family.

I think Joe might take a year or so out - but by the looks of that statement he's kept the door open to returning to coaching down the line.

Still though - if he truly is retiring permanently from coaching, what a way to really add motivation to your team as you guide them to the biggest tournament of their lives.

Is he staying on in Ireland or going back to NZ? The statement is a little ambiguous in that regard. I know the medical support for his son was a factor in him staying this long so, if he's not looking at a job back in NZ, I wonder would he be hanging about? Could make a comfortable living off media work and coaching clinics.

I'd be surprised if he stayed in Ireland, I know back in 2015 he had to go overseas for treatment with his son as the specialists weren't in Ireland at the time. There's a good chance of him moving home just for the support network of his wider family.

Takes a year out, coaches the Lions for a series win in South Africa in 2021, elected president in a landslide victory in 2025.

The Freedom of the City of Dublin is awarded by Dublin City Council after approving a person nominated by the Lord Mayor. Eighty-two people have been honoured under the current process introduced in 1876. Most honourees have made a contribution to the life of the city or of Ireland in general, including politicians, public servants, humanitarians, artists and entertainers; others were distinguished members of the Irish diaspora and foreign leaders, honoured visiting Dublin. Honourees sign the roll of freedmen in a ceremony at City Hall or the Mansion House and are presented with an illuminated scroll by the Lord Mayo..

If it's good enough for BOD............

Constitution prohibits "Titles of nobility", not honours across the board. They ain't the same - nobody with an OBE or the French National Order of Merit is nobility (because of their medal, at least). Although the only Irish honour currently up for grabs, as I understand it, is the "Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad".

I would love to see the reaction on the Irish interwebz if the British Establishment gave Joe an award for all that he's done for rugby in NI. Love it.

He hasnt taught since 2003 in New Zealand. His service to the education system should be irrelevant. He could get freedom of Dublin but what more?
