With the Government still withholding funding, we might have to put in €100 each for John's Christmas Party. Have a heart, he'll be lonely this year, plus he has no previous experience in reaching into his own wallet to fund his lavish parties.

I don't get the anger towards Ross either.

This is the natural outcome of the 'hardball' attitude everybody was happy he was displaying towards the FAI.

The mob were happy when Ross told the FAI to lie in their own bed.

The mob might be less happy when they realize that bed involves no international competition for Irish clubs and the country.

Politicians do what gets them votes. If freezing out the FAI is politically popular then they will do it. If bailing the FAI out is politically popular they will do it.

Lads why are we all annoyed with Ross. The man is clearly a minister and not a specialist. He has people around him to give him the info needed. He is nothing more than a face or figure head for a bigger machine.

Re LOI, the clubs have been speaking for a long time about the future, trying to sort out what happens after 2021. If they were not speaking seriously before JD left they should have been doing it afterwards. If any club did not come to the table they dont deserve a place at the table when the new LOI kicks in.

the hardball attitude that he has had for about five minutes? Ross has been Minister for Sport since 2016. If anything it shows the influence he could have had earlier.

And the LOI doesn't 'go away', they've been outside the FAI before and they can be again. Lack of Europe would probably cause an upheaval and change of ambitions, but it doesn't go away.

Shane Ross, someone who has no interest in Sport should not be Minister for Sport.

Brendan Griffin when asked today, didn't even realise we needed a domestic league to have an international side. Also stated The International Team would not be able to play V Slovakia if they went bust (he forgets we have about 30 International Teams)

What was his opinion on the FAI a few months ago?

Public money was going into the FAI. It was obvious there was huge problems with Delaney crushing dissent at every turn.

If you're doing a good job, you don't worry about criticism. Only those with something to hide behave like that.

Ross is paid a hefty salary that comes with a lot of perks.

    And didn't do his job.

Now he's acting the hard man.

If the FAI go bust, surely the Minister For Sport who should have been making sure everything was above the book with them, should get the sack!

There is far more to his remit than babysitting the FAI.

Lads as I have already said Ross or Griffan for that matter dont have to be sport junkies nor do they have to understand the rules nor regulations. They are on figureheads for departments, they have civil servants to do the work and feed them with the info.

As for what the government did or didnt know...maybe people should be asking that question of Sport Ireland or Deloitte Ireland, the groups who audited the FAI and never found anything. I suspect however there was a double accounts set...1 cooked for the auditors and 1 non existent because it would show the reality of what was going on.

DO you think Dermot Ahern knew every paragraph of law when he was justice minister or did he know everything about foriegn affairs when he was minister there??? Like fcuk did he and he is a solicitor...he spent too much time windsurfing to read up on everything. A minister has to know who to ask for answers.......

Football as the biggest participation sport in the country would be a sizeable part of his remit.

    They were receiving taxpayer funding.

And it was obvious to the dog in the street there was problems.

    What did Ross do?

Publicly back Delaney when he should have been asking questions.

    Not good enough.

    1. Sport Ireland werw auditing them for the government funding. They came back and said all is well......also did the FAI want them inhouse?? One can only help or work with people/groups who want you to be there.

    2. Sport Ireland came back and said everything was OK....they were responsible for government money.

    3. What did other ministers do before him, its been going on for years, long before JD arrived??? Always easy to point the finger when things are public.

Transport and Tourism would be seen as far more important.

Ross is a figurehead for his department for all we know FAI/SI/Deloitte were all communicating with his department the same bull**** .

Ross is a politician and will most likely be out of this role in another year or less.Hes going to do what suits the dept. now.

Before anyone thi is otherwise I'm no fan of Shane Ross but I dont think any other minister for sport would have done much differently so far. This isnt anything new but has any minister in the last 20 years done much about the FAI?
Genesis report was mostly ignored and the previous one clearly was never used .

There's no question about it, Ross will be out of that role in a few months, he might even be out of the Dail in a few months.

Not a big fan of Ross for numerous reasons, not just this, but he has done what most ministers would do since March. In fairness I don't think there was any other way to handle it.

Other politicians would have failed at the job so that's ok?

I asked the question did any minister in the last 20 years do much about the FAI?

You took that as me saying that it's ok for ministers to fail at their jobs?

    That's simply something I didn't say .

The League joined the FAI a number of years back, surely it can decouple.

Wouldn't matter who the league of Ireland was ran by.
The UEFA club prize pot is paid to the FAI to distribute to the LOI clubs- you're talking €2million a year plus youth development money clubs here get would be gone without an FA as the League wouldn't be entitled to enter European competitions.
The league would fold in the morning without that money.
I think it was a throw away comment by Ross but it does show the regard our national leagye is held in government.

LOI clubs need to get off their holes and organise themselves into a lobby group. Grassroots football was looked after in the space of a few days.

The fact the sports minister is able to say "if the FAI goes, the League of Ireland goes" without repercussion sums it up. He's talking about the likes of Bohemians, Sligo Rovers, Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk who are all 100 year old clubs. Athlone Town are on the go since 1887, older than Celtic!
The Scottish sports minister would be on the dole if he said the same about the SPL.

Isnt what Ross said correct regarding the FAI and LoI ?
If FAI liquidated the league wouldn't be allowed enter European competitions or get money from UEFA .
    Is that not correct.

Also dont the FAI(all UEFA associations)need the LoI to have international teams ?
No national league means no international football.
    They are all connected.

I was reading somewhere earlier ,going into examinership would be the most likely route they would try to take rather than liquidate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭Irishmale0399

If they go into examinership then the government or other interested parties can go in with demands to take them out of it, forcing change within the rulebookl. I am lead to believe that would mean less input from within the football family at board level and more independent directors. Added to that the LOI would be a seperate entity......

FAI issuing statements again this evening......Minister made private matters public today....well there is the next excuse not to appear infront of the committee.....

Funny is they want the money but dont want to explain themselves in public...sound familiar???

Their statement tonight is an embarrassment.

What did they expect, go begging for 18m on Monday and expect no questions to be asked about it 2 days later.

They really should be attending the Oireachtas meeting but I suppose they will only make fools of themselves.

They want a bailout but they don't want anyone to know what they had to say to get it

Who the hell is driving the FAI at the moment? Embarrassing teenage girl stuff.

First the Oireachtais no-show after saying they'd be there. Now, snarky statement at the government released at 8.30pm tonight, so they can let their version of events run until there's an official reply mid-morning tomorrow. How the hell was that meeting supposed to be confidential? They are asking to be bailed out with taxpayer money. If they got the thumbs up was everyone just supposed to keep quiet forever about where the money came from?

I thought the removal of JD would cure a lot of problems, but the Board seem to be just as bad. Delusional, self-centered brats... hard to believe these are grown adults.
