bingo, initiated a refund which is happening and ordered a new controller from amazon

I would be careful buying from Amazon resellers too, there's loads of fakes for sale on Amazon.

I seem to be having eternal PS4 problems

Turn on the PS4, can't fully start up, i goto download 7.51 update onto usb. It seems to install fine, reboots back to the same screen as when I turned it on. I know that full reinstall will fix it but I'm 50 percent way through last of us 2 with only hard drive saves.

Any way I can salvage my save for the last of us 2? My bro has a PlayStation 4 slim if that helps any!

@ronano: Can you connected the HDD to a PC somehow and copy over the save file? Then you could do the full fresh install and copy back over your save(s).

What site sold it to you? Did they state it was an official controller?

eBay which I know is always a risk but it was listed as official. I got a refund so overall no complaints

Replaced thermal paste. Definitely made a huge difference. A certain menu in Sekiro was the most recent thing I knew always drove it wild, so I'm after spending a bit of time in that menu, playing the game a bit, going back to it etc. Extremely quiet. Fans picked up a little the second time, but nothing compared to what it was.

Only issue is I dropped a small screw in it somewhere and couldn't get it back out. Was mostly done when I dropped it somewhere near the disk drive and had to take whole thing apart again. Even took out the disk drive but can't find it. Don't think its an issue though, and its not in the actual disk drive (which I barely use anyway) so no worry.

Well worth taking a crack at if you're having trouble with yours. Not a spec of dust in mine either, I think it was purely down to the paste.

Only used a few pieces of it, only two types of screws. Some of the other pieces that come with it came in handy though. Then just Arctic MX-4 thermal paste.

Followed this video which may have been posted by yourself or someone else here, had it in my history when I googled.

Some of the internals were slightly different to the model he was working on but simple to figure out.

My new fan and thermal paste is due for delivery tomorrow, so I'll be having a crack at it myself. Fingers crossed!

Any recommendations for removing the warranty stickers on the back? Don't want them to look like they've been removed, intend on trading in the console for the 5 (my usual go to of steam is probably not recommended!).

I think you can order up replacement stickers online, might want to do that and compare them before you start removing anything if you're worried about trading it in.

Yep, I had to do that with the original PS4 after cleaning the fan and it not being accepted to trade in by GameStop. Ordered stickers off eBay and traded in for Pro in different store.

Ok, fan and thermal paste replaced, and the difference is night and day. I booted up from a cold start, started MW (download update...), quick play, played for 10 seconds, backed out and video is in the menu. You can hear the fan easily.

Powered off, took apart, replaced the fan (already had the Nidec, but put in the new one anyway), cleaned CPU and reapplied thermal paste. Put it back together. Started MW, quick play for 10 seconds, quit back out to the lobby, and you could barely hear it then.

I'll have to give it a bit more time and play a bit more intensively, but as you can see from the pic, replacing the paste is probably what resolved this. Highly recommended if you can do it yourself, or get someone to do it for you. For reference, I have the Pro 7016b model, and the teardown was slightly different to most videos, but still manageable. One note is that most videos remove the power supply before the shields and motherboard on the other side, but there were 2 screws holding the power supply in from the other side which wasn't in the videos.

    Before
    After

Ok, this really REALLY drives home the benefit, cheers for putting that in!

Nay bother. Best to actually see the benefit rather than reading it.

Just played a full game of NBA 2K20, during which the fan used to go 90 about 15 times throughout. I had to keep pausing the game as I thought I could hear the fan, turns out it was the crowd in the game. I'm extremely happy with the improvement!

Great stuff, PM! The video is great for showing the difference too. For me the difference was so big at the start that I worried I hadn't reconnected the fan at all :D

Haven't done any major gaming myself since, so like you say time will tell and it'll be important to see what it's like after an hour or two. But definitely seems to make a huge difference anyway.

That improvement is shocking, send those fecking videos to Sony, they may offer you a job.

If you want, I can send you my details for a video call while you're doing it.

So I can watch the disaster in real time, while randomly going "No... not that one!"

"You don't actually need to take the cover off at all. You just need a drill, a good aim and some f*cking balls!"

Nah seriously though, it's really not hard. Main bit of weird advice I'd give (not sure if I read it here or somewhere else), is get an empty ice cube tray. For each step, put the screws you take out in one part of it. That way you keep them all separate, and when it comes to putting it all back together you'll be able to see how many screws need to go back in at each step. Handy to take a few photos as you go along too before unscrewing something so you know what it's supposed to look like putting it back together.

A fabric placemat works great too as it stops everything skidding around

I actually used a sheet of A4 paper and drew an outline of where the screws came from. I'm also a bit weird so every screw went back into the same place it came from.

Depending on your model, it could be slightly different to the videos. As I said earlier, there are 2 screws holding in the PSU from the opposite side which wasn't in any video I saw, and I had an extra shield that was over the CPU that seems to be part of the larger shield on newer models. But yeah, A4 sheet helped massively. I also had the X clamp instead of the S clamp covering the CPU.

Still daunting at the time though! And it still doesn't feel right to 'snap' the covers off!

It's 4:20 am, I had just finished a game of 2K20, and the fan was louder again. Not to the level in the video, but definitely louder, about 30-40% of what it was in the video. Was coming and going, but even now in the after game, it's spinning louder. Not sure why, maybe because of the HDR which I normally don't have on my own tv, I'm tempted to open it up again and check the thermal paste, but really at this stage I think it's just bad design. The heat coming out the back of it is crazy.

Started up MW and did the same process as per my initial post about changing it, into a game, back out, in lobby and it's currently spinning at about 60-70% of the pre-change. I'm at a loss. If it's not just bad design, the only thing it could be at this stage are the thermal pads for the RAM.

Edit: Even letting it just sit there at the XMB with nothing happening (Ghost of Tsushima active background) the fan is going at a low, albeit audible rate. Granted, it's early and the house is otherwise quiet, but still... Is one supposed ot let the paste dry before using it again?!

Edit 2: Just finished a few hours session of Mad Max, fan was audible throughout, but low, console is red though above the CPU area with the heat it's producing. Must be something else causing this.

Thermal paste won't wear out that quick. Wonder would it be possible to change the fan to a small Noctua or something?

It's a full custom jobbie, now unless you could separate the metal housing and slip in a normal fan I dunno as I've never had the fan out of my ps.
