    Hi everyone,
I am looking for advice on living in Balbriggan. I have heard lots of different opinions so I am really not sure what to believe. My main concern is around anticocial behaviour in the area, it looks like there's a good community and all but antisocial behaviour remains a problem. So looking to get some current , recent advice. Would greatly appreciate any advice that can help me reach a decision. Thank you

    Good luck with the decision.

I'd buy the skerries side of balbriggan over the drogheda side. I'd spend a few hours in the estate to get the feel of the place before buying . Theres a lot of social housing in balbriggan, id prefer owner occupiers next door personally.
    Why are current owners selling?

Go around the area you are thinking of buying on a friday or saturday night around 9pm-10pm and see what the vibe is.

This is a much better idea than listening to random strangers on the internet who probably don't live in Balbriggan and have read one or two threads and have convinced themselves its a war zone! I don't live in Balbriggan, but I drive through there regularly (day & night) and have had dinner in a couple of the restaurants/pubs there recently and have never seen any incidents of anti social behaviour.

Are you buying or renting? If you're renting you could always take a chance on it and move if it's ****. That said I've only heard of bad things there these days.

You get what you pay for in this life.
There's a reason property there is relatively cheap.

Hi, we are looking for some recommendations on where to buy in Balbriggan. We are a young family of three and would hate making a mistake and getting a place in rough area. Can somebody recommend a good area to live in?

I have a lot of friends living in Balbriggan, some in the newer estates and had to move out of the area due to antisocial behavior.

Another friend bought in the older part of Balbriggan and loves it, much safer.
Many advice is to check the area out at different times on the day and night, especially the weekend.

It has a lot of bad press recently, but not all parts are bad so unfair to judge it all with same brush but I would process with caution and make sure it’s a nice part your buying in.

Research research research is my advice. The older part appears more settled, slightly more expensive but worth it in long run.
    Best of luck with it

Areas with the least antisocial behaviour would be Hampton Cove, Fancourt Heights, Balrothery, Flemington. Ardgillan Heights/Lawn.
Westbrook and Chapel Gate wouldn’t be too bad either.

If at all possible stay away from Balbriggan.

I like people from other countrys. However in tyrellstown the level.of education was really bad due to 60 to 70% of the class being second generation Irish

We bought beside a great school in another area and our daughters are getting As

Terrible thing to say I know and it was just our experience but if you have kids research local schools too.

I would go for one of the older housing estates, there are some lovely houses .
Some of the houses in Moylaragh have pyrite issues.
Take a drive around at different times of the day and night to get a feel for it.

I moved to Balbriggan about 3 years ago. My husband is from the next village over.
I’d agree with above look at older estates and schools.
Schools are full here and alot would send their kids further out, balscadden NS and Hedgestown NS are a short drive away and lovely very small numbered schools.
Westbrook, chapel gate are new older estates, so plenty of young families with a decent mix of nationalities.
Kids are out playing on the road most dry days and summer they are out till near dark! Kids are under 12 so no ‘gangs’ just knocking around.
    I love it here

Places like Balrothery are lovely, but pricey for the area. Depending on your budget , look at the older estates such as Derham Park and Curran Park, or Gibbon Terrace. Generally, look around the "Skerries end" of Balbriggan, i.e. the southern end. Older, quieter and settled communities - many families have been there decades and decades.

    Hi all,

Looking to buy a property based in Moylaragh development in Balbriggan. We are a young family with no kids. My main concerns are:

    1) The Moylaragh Estate is known for pyrite issues - although all properties being sold there have the green cert (pyrite free), I am wondering if pyrite won't be an issue for selling the property in 10-15 years?

    2) Anti-social behaviour - articles keep popping up with gang violence in Balbriggan. Not sure how bad it is - anyone living in the newer developments out there? Reading news articles and hearing gossiping about it makes it sound as a bad place to live.

I have visited the place on several occasions (different days, different times), it did not look dangerous to me one bit, but might been the wrong time of the day.

Few lads I know lived in Balbriggan in the old part of town. They said the old part was grand, not a lot of socialising in town and they personally did not have any issues with gangs or anti-social behaviour. Although both of them said they have heard of problems in the newer estates.

Any comments or inputs from the people living in Balbriggan will be very much appreciated.

I have never seen any gangs in Balbriggan... I've heard on the radio that there are gangs, I've seen reports of gangs on facebook... but I've never actually seen any in real life myself... but then again i'm only forty odd years in the town. The black (and tan) gang of the 1920's were the last gang to live up to the crazy facebook reports of gangs in the town... I would take rumours and gossip on social media with a pinch of salt. Trust your senses and your gut!

There are pyrite issues with moylaragh and other estates near Dunnes stores. The price will be kept down as difficulty getting finance on pre pyrite house. Also there could be an issue with house insurance. Worth asking the bank what they think.
Look at houses on the sea side of the Harry Renolds road. Built before the Celtic tiger and no issues with pyrite.

    Elaborate.

The well documented gang crime and antisocial behavior issues. The place is a kip.

Or are those 200 residents just 'making it all up' ?

Well documented? One article in a rag from over a year ago...
Sorry, I forgot, the Herald is a bastion of truth and accuracy

The dog whistling with this stuff will never cease to amaze me.

Weird how they’re ‘Balbriggan gangs’ when the majority of the reported incidents happen outside of the town... a handy scapegoat!

Regarding the ‘demo’ about the gangs at the Garda station - you sure that wasn’t politically motivated? Maybe look into what organisation supported same. Bandwagon jumping oning!

The place is a kip??? Great input.

OP to answer your question, there are some lovely areas in Balbriggan.
I'm from there and it can be a great spot to raise a family.

There are some good threads in the Dublin County North forum that may be more helpful to you. There's a good one here: https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057578940

I would advise you to ignore those that don't actually have any experience of the place other than nonsense, sensationalised articles in rag papers.

    Good luck

The Herald just reported the protest. Are you saying the protest didn't happen? Or that it did happen but the 200 people are just having a laugh, making it all up?
Just google the videos, news articles, etc if you're thinking of buying there. Do your own research. There's plenty of documented info on the internet about the crime, antisocial behavior and gang problems.
I would not encourage anyone to buy there, your property will be worthless in a few years as the gardai are struggling to control these gangs.

And tell me, Moonjet, do you live there?
Or are you basing all this on these "well documented" cases of "gangs"?

To put that into perspective, I just googled Dublin crime and in 0.49 seconds found 51,100,000 results.

It's probably fair to say neither results are generally indicative of much other than an area isn't completely crime free.

I'd personally put much higher value on the opinions of people who have first hand experience of a town/city and the areas/townlands/estates within.

I'm familiar with two households, both in the Dublin St area of Balbriggan: no problems at all, say my friends; just the usual issues same as any town in the world.

And those "rough areas" with the alleged "gangs" of wild young people: they will settle as time goes by. Happens to all the new estates at first, then things calm down. Crumlin used to be undesirable and now its almost visibly gentrifying. Many other examples.
