If you want one new the dept of justice have stopped dealers stocking them but will allow a pistol be imported provided your local superintendent has issued a licence for you and your pistol. But plenty in the country for sale secondhand, try hilltop or mike Duggan Killarney

Or head up north to where you can actually see pistols before you spend your money.

That sounds like the best idea.

Are you a member of a shooting range ? you will need to be a member before you'd be granted a licence, what type of pistol shooting disciplines are you intending to shoot. as this would point you in the right direction when buying a pistol for those disciplines.

Great, you are good to go so. Those walther's used to be heaps of rubbish, maybe the new ones are better, but i doubt it. A hammerli is a bit more money, but much better.

Walthers 22 would be the P22 , I've never owned one and never will, it is said the new model is an improvement but the older model is reported to be a poor gun. Maybe someone who has one could shed so light on what they think of them.
here are a couple of pages as a taster of pistols for sale in the North.

    I’ve heard the p22 aren’t great.
The ppq is a little different.
Haven’t seen much negative stuff about it.
Seen some nice berettas when I was abroad.
    But can’t remember the model.
    Not gone on the hamerelli

Yes, lovely pistols, but heavy. They do a plastic framed model now, with an aluminium barrel, with steel liner.

The Beretta I see mostly here would be the 87 Target.

Good pistol, but you would want to handle one before you buy one. The grip is fairly small.

Anyone see the new polymer framed cz cadet ? The old one was a great pistol.

Where’s the best place to see any?
Some place up north that would have a few ?

Have you looked at harbour house. They have a Facebook page Harbour Guns with a few pistols advertised. Has anyone tried the new Grand Power X Trim pistols. They seem to be the main agent for them in Ireland

Smith & Wesson Model 41 or Hammerli 215. Modern stuff from Benelli, Walther and others are fun, too.

The best places to see pistols is any range, what r the guys at your own range using, a lot of people shoot comps, so its going to be SW41, Hammerli xesse, Beretta 87T, Ruger, Buckmark, and some of the older but accurate Colt Woodsman and the like. and you have the ISSF type of pistol, Pardini SP, Walther GSP the list goes on.

Haven't seen any Walther PPQ or the likes at comps.

There's a shoot in Castlebridge Co Wexford 3-4 Nov might be closer than traveling up North , as most shops will only have a few in stock.

While on the topic of pistols, does anyone know of anyone in Ireland who has a Volquartsen Scorpion?

Fancy a bit of history in your target pistol, and one that has a history in ww2 and afterwards in the Cold war era as used by the CIA,and even issued to Francis Powers the U2 pilot shot down over Soviet Russia?

Then keep an eye out for the High Standard line of pistols. They are excellent wood and metal .22s that were renowned for their accuracy, and were used by the US armed forces as a .22 target pistol in Camp Perry for many years as they have the 1911 model grip angle. They are apparently still found in the US Army supply catalogue and end up on the market as surplus.
Models like The Victor, Military Citation, Supermatic Trophy etc are to keep an eye out for.All of them are single action blowback in 22 short and .22 Lr

They are cheap as chips on Egun going from anything of 100 euros upwards and will keep going for decades.

Only downside is their mags, and that some of them you have to form the lips to certain brands of ammo, and the mags aren't cheap anymore either. So you are proably just stuck to one brand that works well then.

There are 2 gun dealers onsite most Saturdays in Harbour House outside Athy, Co. Kildare. Good choice of .22lr pistols and revolvers.

Don't want to derail the thread with political talk (cause it's not allowed), but there was a high court case in 2013 (IIRC) and two RFDs, one in particular, took action against a Super/Chief Super and won. The case revolved around the delaer not being allowed to import stock to have on display.

So when i read that the DoJ are stopping this i believe two things:
    1. It's not the DoJ, but if it is it's illegal.
    2. The RFDs have ahand in it cause they get paid up front, have someone who already has the license and don't end up with stock they cannot sell.

IOW they go along with it because it's a "win win" for them.

If planning to attend Castlebridge, as a spectator, (no license or insurance) be sure to drop then an emailt to let them know in advance, so they expect you.

You will also require eye and ear protection at all times, capable of withstanding indoor centrefire pistol volley fire. If you don't have it, be sure to mention it in your email.
