Hahaha back in the days when you could find porno mags "growing" in random hedges.

I shoulda joined the Tidy Towns volunteers.

Instead of struggling on with the Family Album catalogue :D

No harm in that either my father was part of a large family that type of thing was done. Strong family unit etc.

As I said things are more manufactured these days with outside help brought in.

No harm for say a 9 year old to be responsible for 5 younger siblings with no or minimal adult supervision?

well no harm if the intention is to marry them off as soon as legally possible. Good practice like.

That is the implication on this thread on many occasions.

Ah its not though. People are rightly challenging issues that are rife amongst the travelling community, like underage marriage, no onus on education, criminality, violence, animal neglect etc.

Funniest thing claimed so far on this thread.

I'm sorry but that's complete nonsense. Children don't have to be in a creche on order to interact and develop. None of my kids have ever set foot in a creche yet they are well rounded and developed kids. They are no different to kids that have attended creches.

Some peoples lives are suited to the the use of creches etc. Others don't need them due to their lifestyle and/or work choices. Neither is right or wrong.

    nah

Kids that aren't in crèche are statistically more likely to be traveller.

In fairness there are a few things the settled community could learn from the traveller community.

    1) The family unit comes first - and is it is even stronger bond as it is not 'manufactured'

    2) The large family unit looks after its own - through thick and thin

    3) The older people in the traveller community are treated with respect.

All old values which I feel are slowly dying for the sake of 'modern Ireland' and so called 'progress'.

People seem to forget the positive points in the rest of the noise.

Regarding points 1 & 2. Margaret has no support from her or her husbands families. She was raised by an aunt. No mention of her father.

Plenty of support from the state though. Circa 36,000 (excluding RA) yet she claims the gubbermint is robbing her.

Unless we use the term creche in it's zoological sense -

animals taking care of young not their own.

    Apposite here, somehow.

I do not commend travellers who never work. I commend the travellers for thier family ethos that is a different thing entirely.

I am not trolling by the way.

It just bugs me that because of a few unsavory people.

    Then the logic is:

    All Travleler culture = bad

    All settled culture = good

That is far from true as far as I see it.

"Culture" does not automaticallty equate to "acceptable".

It describes habitual behaviour, and in this context, behavior that is not acceptable in a normal functioning society.

Let us take a good look at this venerated culture, a culture that demands respect and fear and celebrates violence and destruction on all levels and endlessly sucks the state's tit, filled with your hard earned taxes.

Here's Bimmy the Sharer's gift to society, spreading an endless stream of violence and ignorance:

    https://www.youtube.co...AcSsPkIqWkXP7LZ-JV9w

To those who say we can learn from traveller culture, I ask what exactly do you want people to learn from it, and why should anyone accommodate any of it?

The last thing I would want is any of the characters in these videos attempting to integrate with me or mine by moving anywhere near me. They can stay in their ghettos and keep integrating with themselves.

    Broken homes are another issue.
They can happen at any level of society, death, divorce, etc. etc.
My point was that Travellers view the family unit as important.
The settled community where both parents work have definitely lost that aspect leaving it to others to look after thier off-spring.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

That is another part of the problem fear and lack of integration branding all travellers as the same.
It is not very helpful either.

That would not be reasonable obviously.
13/14 year old and up would have plenty of cop on though.

Wasn't that discovered as to one of the reasons they diverged from wider society, family getting a bit to close.

I never mentioned broken homes. Both her parents may have died leaving her in the care of an aunt. However, she doesn’t appear to have any support from her or her husbands families.

Not all working couples depend on others to look after their offspring. Many retired grandparents help out.

A lot of Travellers seem to be fostered out. What's the payment from the taxpayer to the foster parent/guardian for this again? Just wondered.

About 310 slightly higher payment for a teenager. Having said that my wife and I fostered on several occasions anyone that thinks there's money in it needs to find a different occupation.

Quite true. In their culture it appears to be very important to have baptisms, communions, weddings and funerals to fight at. I'm not sure about confirmations, but I'm confident that you'll be able to put me right!

So, from what I can see reforming the traveller culture (for many on here) does not just mean education, and marrying later etc.
It means the break up on thier reliance on the family unit - as people would not just like settled culture imposed on travellers.
They would like them to do as settled people do - work like dogs, rarely see thier kids, pay extortionate creche prices. Leading to the wonderfully stressful rat race that all that entails. Then the family unit gets forgotten or pushed aside.
But family is core in traveller culture one of the positives of its demographic.
It would shatter it if it lost that.

Some of the reactions on here that are clearly anti-all travellers no matter what and with no real efforts of integration type plan from the authorities (on a human level) It is a sad state of affairs.
Also the travellers groups/law abiding travellers do not criticise other travellers enough who are not law abiding. Or no criticism at all (such as in the cash case) so the cycle continues and the 'them and us' is enforced even more.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

€325 a week plus the monthly child benefit of €140. That's a mere €18,150 a year - tax free! Shure there's no way in the world that you'd make any money on a pittance like that! Especially if you were a traveller.

I mentioned that as well but in the settled community it is almost an accepted part of life now - childcare costs etc etc

I'd prefer to see the breakup of their reliance on state hand outs and maybe contribute to the state. After that I don't give a f**k what they do once it's legal. Yeah I've seen the result of some Traveller family occasions nothing positive tbh huge mess and several injuries though.

As I posted earlier that is playing to the stereotype.
Not all travellers are looking for fights at church occasions, it is just a baseless statement.

Is each traveller a spokeperson for all-travelllers?
Is each non-traveller a spokesperson for all non-travellers?

Is each person from one group indicative how another will act?
They are not cats/dogs they are people like anyone else.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    Ignore button works sometimes.

But I reckon you are just doing this for a big laugh and a reaction. You have not placed ONE decent argument about the Traveller lifestyle at all.

But you have denigrated those people who are paying for it. Nice, and most people have figured it out by now without you anyway.

If you can support them and bring them up in a half decent manner, as I'm sure this posters parents did, then it's actually pretty responsible.

I wouldn't call squeezing 7 children into one bedroom a half decent manner.

What unique part of their present culture (that is uniquely different and separate) from settled culture do they want us to repect?

Maybe settled people could start at the basics of what is expected of them?

No point saying singing and folk tales, they're not unique to travellers.

Nor fixing pots and pans. Doesn't happen anymore.

Talk about what parts of the current culture are unique to travellers and should be aspired to by non.
