What's funniest is the spelling on the sleeve- it's all over the place. There's a song I presume to be called Down by the Liffey Side.

However it's named three times on the record:

    Down by the Lissey side.
    Down by the Liffy side.
And on the LP itself- Down by the Lifey side.

I'm a long-time fan of the band Yes, but their 1978 album Tormato is not on my favourites. For the cover they engaged the services of design team Hipgnosis, who had worked on many great albums including Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. With Tormato, however, it's fair to say that they were not at their best.

There are conflicting claims for just who threw the tomato at the proposed design, but everyone agreed a splat of tomato actually improved the result ... barely. :o

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

The worst album cover I have ever saw was Type O Negative's "Origin Of The Feces". It's a photo of the lead singer's anus. It's too disgusting to post or link to. Filthy

And also because it is NSFW, "My pussy belongs to daddy"

American Gospel and C&W music are very much a prime source for some dodgy album covers. Of course they would have assumed it was all innocence and sweetness when it was released...

No mention of the Blind Faith album cover? Topless underage girl on it.

It's been mentioned. In similar vein is the Scorpions Virgin Killer.

Great thread but a lot of the pics are coming up blank on my tablet. Anyone else getting this?

Jesus, I just did a google image search for those

Why do I think I'm now on some list ?? - especially the Scorpions one, surely that's illegal ? Who the hell took that photo ??

I reckon Throbbing Gristle knew exactly what they were thinking when they came up with the idea for '20 Jazz Funk Greats'. The copy I have has the first picture below on the cover, with the second on the back, but the second one (with the naked and apparently dead body) was the original cover.

Two Caravan albums with embarrassing titles, from the 70s prog rock group

"For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night", featuring the song "The Dog, The Dog. He's At It Again" and the album "Cunning Stunts"

I have that album with the poster. They knew exactly what they were doing. Cosey said in her autobiography they were deliberately emulating the style of cheesy budget compilation albums in the hope that unknowing punters would buy it and be freaked out by TG's music.

    different times i suppose

No innocence involved there. Derek was well aware of the double entendre! A musical genius, an eccentric and a comedian too.

Derek Bell plays with himself. A classic 😊

Not the cover, but inside the CD booklet of Boys For Pele by Tori Amos there's a picture of her breastfeeding a piglet.

I used to think the cover of Load by Metallica was something engulfed in flames, but it's human sperm and pigs blood mixed together.
