I wonder is there an element of "draw no further attention to the finances" about us not having a double-header when both teams are home the same weekend or if it's because they pitch won't hold up in Salthill well enough for two games back to back?

I don't think anyone could sit in that cold wind for 4 hours straight.

    Some disaster of a spot.

Also surprised at Cooney, the other two should have been gone a while now - great servants but not at intercounty level anymore.

Going to be a painful couple of years but hopefully Donoghue will leave us in better shape than Shefflin.

How would tynagh abbey duniry be rated in galway? I see mattie Kenny is over them and they have a few well known players like Shane Maloney and Paul Killeen. They'll have a tough one v rathnure on Saturday in the intermidiate semi final. Rathnure beat the kilkenny champs lisdowney pretty comfortable in the leinster final

Great player for Galway was Cooney.

Maybe hunger is just not there anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,608 ✭✭✭✭cson

That's fair, intercounty is a huge commitment these days so not surprised the retirement ages are getting younger and younger.

You'd have to be in college to be able to dedicate the time, no chance with a real job and a family.

Cooney has been struggling with injury the past couple years. Think he had to be convinced to come back last year and never looked in top condition.

A great servant to Galway along with GMac and Tuohey.

I thought if anything was learned from Henry's time, it's that a transition is needed and the 2017 team's time has passed.

That means older lads need to step aside, regardless of how good they have been over the years. No other option.

Agree, the 2017 team's time is long past, with a few exceptions, a whole new team/squad needs to be rebuilt. We are well down the pecking order at this stage, so now is the time to rebuild and hopefully be in a position to seriously challenge in 2 to 3 years. The rebuild should be much further down the road, but, Shefflin's time was largely wasted and a missed opportunity to blood more lads.

Big win for tynagh over rathnure but the game was ruined by the officials. Rathnure midfielder sent off at the throw in for a flick back which was barely a yellow. Another red after half time finished it

I see there was 6 McGrath sisters on the sarsfields team who won the all Ireland club camogie. Rare enough to see big families like that in the GAA in modern times. Is there boys in the family?

Were Galway more accurate from distance hence the 2 point scores?

Has there only been general admission tickets on sale from the start for the Armagh match this Saturday?

I see that's what's on sale now, is generally the way for league, you can go into stand or terrace. But with this being a big occasion of sorts, is the stand sold out or was it always general admission?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭SqueakyKneecap

It's general admission always for League. They're a bit stricter for championship.

Always nice to hammer the neighbours in their backyard.

Having swirlwind pearse stadium as the home venue is the biggest curse for Galway. Playing away is always best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 902 ✭✭✭MattressRick

McHale is a great ground too. All seater stadium with them concrete seats all around the terrace. Parking situation better than Salthill too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭Avon8

Ah all seater is pushing it now! Those death traps will be pulled up before long surely. Concrete poles blocking the view in the main stand also

It's definitely a better stadium than Salthill on days like Sunday when you can get 10-12k there and back much easier. It struggles badly with bottlenecks at the bacon factory end when there's a crowd of 22k+

Salthill isn't bad infrastructure wise it just obviously gets killed by the location and wind. I still think when you've a great weather day like last years Connacht final, and a crowd that has a higher percentage using public transport and having drinks etc rather than driving, there's few better places in the country to watch a game. The problem is that happens so rarely. The Kilkenny game in 2018 was similar, a fantastic day

McHale park is often quite breezy also though, and it had just as much an effect on the match last Sunday as in the previous week in Salthill.

sad news from Galway today.. loved watching michael coleman play… proper hard tough player without any of the nonsense that seamus flanagan engaged in last weekend.. sad for the family afterr what happened his sister in 2009.. an accident i remember well as she was married to a man from my area…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Krazy gang

RIP Michael coleman. Very tough player and good hurler.

But there was no need for a dig at a current player just to satisfy your own ego. Uncalled for.

Commiserations to all Galway GAA folk on sudden death of Michael Coleman. He was a great hurler. RIP.

Very sad news indeed about Michael Coleman. A fine hurler in a fine Galway team. Condolences to all his family and friends and may he RIP.

Desperate news today. Michael Coleman was a colossus of a midfielder. Himself and Pat Malone got the better of Colm Bonnar and Joe Hayes to help Galway beat Tipp in 1988 final. Should have beaten Cork in 1990. A real leader. Tough but fair. Great at pulling on a ball in the air. To think himself and Tony Keady are both gone far too young. Two Galway hurling greats. RIP.

Jesus lads what's the story with the pitch , i arrived late was it a double header with the Maam Cross horse fair , tis no wonder we lost , tis lucky we didnt lose by more , how could you play silky hurling on that field ….😂

great win tonight , o donohue is doing a fine rebuilding job, never took any notice of anthony burns until tonight , fantastic hurler lovely touch to set up the second goal , i taught young trayers was excellent for a lad that is still u 20 this year looks a serious prospect , cianan Fahey is playing some excellent hurling too at the moment , the 53 man squad is probably narrowed down to 33 at the moment but there are a lot of good young lads in that picture especially declan McLoughlin and tiarnan killeen , two fine results in 6 days

game obviously overshadowed by the death of michael coleman and a fine tribute paid before the game for the man
