I'm going to ignore everything the OP said about personal favourites and post a couple of my favourites.

Lot of great shouts so far in this thread. For its historical significance this must be a contender. Jim McCann pours everything in to this passionate performance.

    Jim McCann was seriously underrated.

Apart from Grace, he also sang the definitive versions of Spanish Lady and Carrickfergus.

The Dubliners Album - Fifteen Years On - has some great songs by him.

A lot of great shouts on this thread, but I still haven't made my mind up, even when I try to split categories or bands. I can't split Bad or Unforgettable Fire or With or Without You by U2 let alone decide how they compare to Sarah by Thin Lizzy.

And that is before you consider the more traditional or folk elements such as the many incarnations of Christy Moore or the other lads from Planxty.

I prefer the second Mary Black version, but Katie is a better song of hers.

Very difficult to pick just one song, for me I’ve got hundreds that I love for different reasons but I’ve narrowed it down to three. I lived and worked in New York for a few years and I used to regularly play these three songs on the jukebox in the pub. The Americans loved these songs too and for me, they’re powerful songs sung by unique and unmistakably Irish voices. For me, these are some of the best Irish songs I’ll ever hear.

    The lady in Red______
I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight
I've never seen you shine so bright (you are amazing)
I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance
They're looking for a little romance, given half a chance
And I have never seen that dress you're wearing
Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes
    I have been blind

Never been a fan of U2, but 'One' has to be up there. Never been to a party without someone thinking their version is the definitive one.

Luke Kelly's version of Raglan Road

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,268 ✭✭✭twowheelsonly

Too many contenders for everyone to agree on one but for songs that have travelled worldwide I'd have to be looking at U2 with the likes of Sunday Bloody Sunday, Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, One etc. Cranberries also, in particular Zombie and Linger. Enya is huge worldwide but I'm not sure that many people associate her with Ireland. Nevertheless she's well up there with Orinoco Flow and Only Time just to mention two.

Folk / Trad wise I'd have to with Raglan Road by Luke Kelly, Grace by Jim McCann and Cliffs Of Doneen by Christy Moore but again there's just too many to mention.

Locally, great songs by great bands that never (or haven't yet) made it big my all time favourite is Torn Apart by The VooDoos - a local Cork band that only rarely play together nowadays. Do yourself and give it a listen all the way through ....

Loads more but I could fill the thread with suggestions !! Shows how blessed we are in this country with musical talent.

    I always love The Stunning.

Brewing up a storm or Half Past Two are classics that bring me back to great college days.

U2 One is probably my favourite Irish song.

Thin Lizzy Old Town is a close 2nd.

    This boy is cracking up....
