I don't see the comparison, his family home wasn't crumbling around him due to defective blocks from an industry not properly controlled by the State.

Full circle... People are having their homes demolished because they want a shiny new kitchen.

And the government is apparently to blame for people's marriages failing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,999 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Seriously? Is that the best you can come up with?

this thread is about mica not broken marriages.

Don't forget that nurses won't get pay rises because of Mica.

Any more gems from this thread?

My personal favourite was comparing someone with a mica house to someone buying a pack of rotten sausages. Ridiculous.

The bucks must know where all the FF bodies are buried when we have a minister willing to sacrifice himself for them

How long or how many years does Mica take to show up, typically? We are house hunting at the moment and looking at houses. We saw one great house which was built in 2010 and now I'm nervous it's a Mica house.

It's only pricey if you are trying to access the redress scheme. Simply confirming the presence of mica is much cheaper.

Been some talk of building the new homes using 3D tech. I know nothing about it but it has been talked about in Government and proposals have been submitted from companies supporting it. Would be a very interesting idea and might just be a perfect chance to showcase the technology while at the same time providing homes at a much quicker rate.

Could a surveyor check for Mica? Thanks for replies. It's nerve racking house hunting at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Penfailed

I'd engage the services of a surveyor or engineer to get it checked. I've heard of cosmetic jobs being done on houses to get it sold. Horrible.

Yeah I'd say the shenanigans going on is terrible. My colleague sold her house recently and didn't disclose that house had Mica. I pity the new owner.

Any buyers solicitor who doesn't ask the necessary questions should be ashamed of themselves.

Would they not be liable for being sued?

What about the structural report? I don't think you can buy a house without having such a report done.

Just to keep this thread fresh, heres a link to someone who had to demolish their home.

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/memories-turn-to-dust-as-mica-ridden-home-razed-40798809.html

How anyone can say folk up here are dying to get their home demolished to get a shiny new one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,420 ✭✭✭Technique

For anyone I know who is getting close to having their home demolished, it's no exaggeration to say that it's a highly traumatic experience.

But according to some on here, they're just looking to change their kitchen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,414 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

It must be a terrible thing to watch the house you raised your kids in, tore down.

But as you say, sure you're getting a nice new kitchen out of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭jj880

I know this family. Let me tell you they are completely devastated. Their home was finished to a very high standard. They are renting a tiny house in a nearby town. Maybe they will make it through the scheme and IF they do they will be saddled with a huge amount of debt unless the scheme is fixed.

The numbers are mind boggling .1000s of homes

Prob the tip of the iceberg

Apparently the quarries are still churning out the the stuff ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,414 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I wonder has the government ordered tests of product leaving the quarries since all this broke?

Having said that, they knew about it in 2013 and did nothing.

But I'd like to think with the publicity it had got of late, they would be covering their arses big time this time around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,999 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Seems like a lot of houses in the Finn Valley area have been tested and most have mica.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

There should be a government appointed team monitoring every block that comes out of these places

Sure the cost is going to be astronomical

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

Shocking how homebond just washed their hands of this

They used to be out on site checking on stuff but they dropped the ball on this and somehow walked away from their responsibilities

A fresh article on Irish Times website, saying costs expected to rise

One line stood out....“As the number of entrants to the scheme increases, so too would the projected cost,” said a senior Government source, echoing the views of other Coalition figures.

Well, duh! Of course if more people apply, cost is going to increase!

That's why the senior government sources are paid big bucks!
