Hi all I just need an outside perspective on something. Friends with a guy for two years, dating for 5 months. His birthday is coming up and we had discussed going away for it, he didn’t want to go on his actual birthday (Friday) because he’s going out with his friends so I’ve booked the hotel, dinner etc for the Saturday…

If it was to do with a drinking issue, then for what it's worth, it's not about not caring about you or anything like that. He likely doesn't even care about himself. You can't take this personally, as hard as that may be, because it's almost definitely not how it is in reality. The truth was he seems like a guy with issues who just shut them out when your relationship made him come face-to-face with that because he wants to bury his head in the sand. Your life would not be better (aside from fleeting moments of happiness that get ruined, just as your thoughtful gesture did) if he was still in it, but it can be better in time without him.
