I say, yes it is. No thought to implementation or even putting this money in arranging proper childcare.

More tax payers money down the drain

I wasn't 100% certain before, but now thankfully this confirms it, the lad is a muppet.

The proposal is nothing more than pandering to the grey vote. Nothing has been thought through. Christ he was suggesting all four grandparents of one child could get it and also aunts and uncles.

"A payment of €1,000 would be available to grandparents who self-certify that they provide a minimum of ten hours per week of childcare."

How would they prove this? Through proof of payment?

I'm sure the grannys, if they are getting paid, would only be too happy to declare their earnings.

    This thing makes no sense.

Follow his line of thought. Imagine you are a couple whose parents have both sadly passed away and you are paying a fortune for childcare. Fuck all for those unlucky fuckers.

It's just an admission that the cost of living is too high in Ireland for many families.

More half-baked but fully rotten nonsense from Lord Ross. I just cringe when I think about the way so many in the media gave this man credibility.

As a grandparent, I think the while idea is ludicrous. We will mind the grandchildren from time to time out of the love and joy of it. €1000 a year is just a waste. Give more tax credits for child minding costs for the parents. Another bit of nonsense for the independents.

i can only assume an election is in the air and the minister is willing to commit this largess to secure a handful of senior citizens votes in his constituency.

    He's learnt his gombeen-ism well.

Just create more childcare places that are affordable. I'm always shocked when I hear how much it costs. Most other european countries have it far cheaper right?

Nah I think the most moronic thing the idiot has thought up is to "reopen" stepaside Garda station, that's still closed !

Aunts and uncles can apply too apparently. I can only imagine what final cost would be, and the levels of fraud.
What a joke of a politician.
Him and halligan are a dire inditement of politics in Ireland. I'm not an out and out fine gael voter but it must be painful for fine gael to try an run the country while pandering to idiots like these.

Why are you bringing Halligan into this? Is he behind this proposal too?

I saw he wants to increase tax on gambling, but that probably sounds like a good idea.

It is an Independent Alliance childcare budgetary proposal. So I suppose Halligan is involved along with the other clowns.

He's in the same party as Ross. Oh I thought he was off in North Korea sorting out things with Kim jong!

Oh right, sorry. I thought it was a Shane Ross proposal.

Yep, the idea should have be shot down before it left the meeting room where it was suggested. It's an embarrassment.

Not just that, there's many couples who's parents live in different counties, or even too far away in the same county to be in a position to lend a hand with childcare.

It's such a bull**** idea. Give the money to the parents who pay monthly? Nah, give it to grandparents and leave the system wide open to abuse.

I've defended him in the past on other matters but with this piece of sleeveen electioneering he's on his own

    Half-arsed, half-baked idea.

This idea is so crazy, it had to be a smokescreen to divert attention away from the Cervical Check scandal and others that are really doing damage.
This stupid story has twice been headline story on the Indo.ie
Someone is Leinster House spin room is loving the coverage it's getting.

WHAT A IDIOTIC IDEA BY SHANE ROSS .

Does he have any idea what he's saying.

Iv got 2 kids under 4 years old, both in Creche full time, as my wife and I work. Creche fees are crippling us, along with mortgage etc. My parents are both deceased, and my wifes parents are in their 80's.

Why should i pay for Johnny down the road, who, not only the luxury of having all the grandparents around to help him / mind his kids, but now, I have to give money towards his "granny".

Johnny should look after his own "granny" and give her at least a few thousand for looking after his kids

this is so frustrating for me to hear. grow up shane!

Ross should relook at his "save the world" trip to North Korea.

I was thinking they might keep him there, but I suspect they'd refuse to do that as they've enough power hungry nutters of their own.

Between his Save the world trip and the granny grant he's making the healy-raes look quite well.

I don't think the lads in Lenister Huse are loving the coverage, I'd say it's far more likely they are chringing and hope this goes away quickly.

lol, scraping the bottom of the barrel for votes, any chance there might a GE coming up soon in Ireland?

It would be much better to scrap the children's allowance getting handed out in cash and redirect that money to free childcare, pre-school, schooling. books, uniforms, meals, and all those other costs associated with raising a child. At least that way no child is disadvantaged.

Ross is also the genius who recently prosposed lowering the speed limit on motorways to stop climate change... Of all the ways we could actually ease emissions and make the country a better place, changing the motorways we / the EU spent billions on into over engineered dual carriageways seems like it should be well down the list.

Material tax credits or deductions for working parents and child care subsidies for mothers in full time education is a complete no brainer and is actually one of the few tax breaks which would actually pay for itself. There might even be a case for renunerating grand parents who help out but dishing out 1k to anyone who knows a child is ill thought out, populist nonsense.

It's ridiculous topics like this that I keep a mental note of for when the gimps start knocking on the door come election time, so I can posit the question to see how he/she/it reacts.

Usually the wrong answer comes back. Marvellous filter.

As a grandparent who has looked after grandchildren since they were babies, this will never get off the ground, and rightly so. It would be wide open to abuse, and having spoken to other grandparents, none of them think it's a good idea.

I think Ross is trying for the older vote, and expected to find grandparents jumping up and down with delight at this, how wrong he is!

Make sure children have the supports they need in national school. That would give the best outcomes.

Even whine master Joe Duffy asked for a show of hands in his live show in Limerick and 90% thought it was a ridiculous idea.

Lord Sutch Ross has listened to you.

He now says it can be an aunt or uncle or niece or nephew.

Rumour has it that it will be extended to anyone you've had a pint with (obviously not driving home after)

I do have pity for Danny Healy-rae, he has been knocked off his crown of being the Dail clownhead and it is now proudly worn by Lord Sutch

If it were only for Grandparents who looked after kids so the parents could work, there might be some argument but then why not just give parents a grant for childminding? We'll have every chancer in the land applying regardless of personal circumstance/income. He should be ran out of politics.
