The proposal is nothing more than pandering to the grey vote. Nothing has been thought through. Christ he was suggesting all four grandparents of one child could get it and also aunts and uncles.

As a grandparent, I think the while idea is ludicrous. We will mind the grandchildren from time to time out of the love and joy of it. €1000 a year is just a waste. Give more tax credits for child minding costs for the parents. Another bit of nonsense for the independents.

Just create more childcare places that are affordable. I'm always shocked when I hear how much it costs. Most other european countries have it far cheaper right?

I saw he wants to increase tax on gambling, but that probably sounds like a good idea.

Not just that, there's many couples who's parents live in different counties, or even too far away in the same county to be in a position to lend a hand with childcare.

Iv got 2 kids under 4 years old, both in Creche full time, as my wife and I work. Creche fees are crippling us, along with mortgage etc. My parents are both deceased, and my wifes parents are in their 80's.

Why should i pay for Johnny down the road, who, not only the luxury of having all the grandparents around to help him / mind his kids, but now, I have to give money towards his "granny".

Johnny should look after his own "granny" and give her at least a few thousand for looking after his kids

It would be much better to scrap the children's allowance getting handed out in cash and redirect that money to free childcare, pre-school, schooling. books, uniforms, meals, and all those other costs associated with raising a child. At least that way no child is disadvantaged.

Ross is also the genius who recently prosposed lowering the speed limit on motorways to stop climate change... Of all the ways we could actually ease emissions and make the country a better place, changing the motorways we / the EU spent billions on into over engineered dual carriageways seems like it should be well down the list.

Material tax credits or deductions for working parents and child care subsidies for mothers in full time education is a complete no brainer and is actually one of the few tax breaks which would actually pay for itself. There might even be a case for renunerating grand parents who help out but dishing out 1k to anyone who knows a child is ill thought out, populist nonsense.

As a grandparent who has looked after grandchildren since they were babies, this will never get off the ground, and rightly so. It would be wide open to abuse, and having spoken to other grandparents, none of them think it's a good idea.

I think Ross is trying for the older vote, and expected to find grandparents jumping up and down with delight at this, how wrong he is!
