I've heard this theory often. Even about politicians -- shows only having the "less classy" anti-immigration, etc, types on, with the Sinister Liberal Agenda(TM) of making other right-wingers look bad.

Seems more plausible to me that people think these assorted intolerant ideas sound marvellous inside their heads, but get a little bit uncomfortable when someone's actually in full spate, actually saying them over the nation media.
