Seemed to be the issue alright. Presumably the property was originally bought as a 'leasehold' at a cheaper price and now she wants it to be converted to 'freehold' without ponying up. Tedious stuff but more interesting than this call!

There is a right racket goes on though, with the ground rent being essentially uncontrolled, and the freedom price being whatever the owner likes the sound of.
Time for reform and a cap put on it. Something like a maximum ground rent specified, and a multiple of that for buying out the freehold.

So Joe was speaking up for the Church back in the day, when it was popular to do so. Not so much nowadays that it's not such a populist thing to do.

Makes you laugh to hear all the RTE f**kers who now give out to others about the actions of the Church in pre-2000 ireland. RTE were right at the head of the whole committee who held the Church in high esteem back in the day. And even holding other people to that same standard, as Joe did with this man.
