Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

30hrs into this on the Switch and it's consistently blowing me away. Obvious Dark Souls/Metroidvania influences and also similar to two of the best 2d platformers of recent times Celeste and Salt and Sanctuary. I'm guessing I'm over halfway done but just don't want it to end.

    How are the boss fights?

I'd love to give it a shot, heard great things about it. Hate buying digital though. How big is the file? If I could download it without busting my data allowance I'd definitely get it. Looks great.

Don't really get the Dark Souls resemblance myself.

On the Switch, it's about 2.6 gigs or so, if I recall correctly.

Really? Obtuse story line, respawning enemies, interlinking zones and shortcuts, your souls are lost upon dying until you reclaim them, boss fights galore, etc etc.
    How are the boss fights?

    Really good, getting harder

it's just a trend in the last couple of years to see similarities to dark souls in everything.

fantastic game anyhow, looking forward to the next dlc.

Done that, knocked down the light above. He just kicks my ass every time. Have just about ran out of patience with it.

I find the ‘Switch effect’ fascinating. The game was floating around on PC for quite some time, but the conversation around it only seems to have exploded thanks to the recent console release. Pretty remarkable how Nintendo’s portable gives indie games a second lease of life.

As for the Dark Souls comparisons... there’s obviously a lot going on in the game influence-wise, but there’s definitely a strong inspiration from From. It can be a lazy comparison for sure, but when a game has so clearly drawn inspiration from the aesthetic, narrative and gameplay approach of the Souls games it’s a justified one. What’s key is that it still feels like its own thing despite all that, with enough interesting ideas and systems of its own to ensure it doesn’t drown in the shadow of another game.

Did you beat them after? I did them my third go using Quick Focus and Sharp Shadow.

Just in general though I've never had to do as difficult platforming section in 20+ years of gaming as I've just had to do to get the second half of the king soul. It was brutal.

Uninstalled it. Just could not get it done. To make it worse aftr taking a break from the game, I found that when I went back to it I was crap at it and had forgotten all the moves, etc :mad:

It's probably one of my favourite games now. Really really good and super value for €15.

That was brutal! Check out Celeste for a similar platforming challenge.

Some game, can't wait for next dlc in a couple of weeks.

Would this be similar to dead cells?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

Would this be similar to dead cells?

Not really. Dead Cells is more rogue like, in that you die easily enough, but lose everything when you die (weapons etc) bar maybe one or two of the permanent abilities. You slowly work your way back up, but as you get better at the game, it gets easier.

Hollow Knight, from a control point of view, is very similar, but not from a gameplay point of view. If you die, you go to your last save spot, and all you lose is your currency, which can be gotten back, but you retain all your experience, weapons, stats etc.

Personally, Hollow Knight, I found is easier to get into, where Dead Cells will probably require a few hours - I like it, but with Fortnite and Okami, I don't have time to focus on more than one game at a time so I'm parking it for the moment! :)

I bought this on the switch to scratch that dark souls itch until that comes out on switch. I'm really liking it so far. I've gotten really stuck a couple of times so far but I reckon I'm probably at the halfway point ( At the Soul Master Boss ). Love the art direction and the music is fantastic too.

Soul Master took me ages. Ended up leaving him and coming back when I'd Shade Cloak.

Absolute bargain at that price. What is it now €10?

I'm nearly 70 hours play time now :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 737 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Finished after about 70 hours. Knew nothing about it in advance, but probably one of my favourite gaming experiences of recent years. What to play next though?

Is there any clue that you are supposed to slash downward on those purple mushrooms to bounce? I assumed I was missing a key item to progress and wandered the map for a few hours.

    No, just intuition really.

Great game though. I thought I didn't have the patience for metroidvania's anymore. Turns out I just hadn't played a decent one. The art style massively put me off trying this before. Insects are icky.

Wow I was convinced this wasn't coming out on the Xbox but I see there in the store and it's out today and only 11.99. Time to see what all this fuss is about.

Played about two hours and really like it so far. Encountered two bosses, one might have been a mini boss, and they didn't cause me much hassle.

    Art style is nice too.

Got a PS4 release today as well. Debating whether to pick it up for PS4 or Switch. Getting a physical release next year as well. Don't want to wait that long though.

Get it on Switch. It's perfect for pick up and play that the switch offers.

I will more than likely. Its cheaper for one thing. Lads on the Nintendo forum pointed me in direction of South African store where its less than a tenner.

Ah three euro isn't going to make much of a difference, that's just a large latte.

I bought it on release on Switch for €15 and I wouldn't say I was short changed at all. In fact I got way more value than €15 out of it.

It's actually a fiver haha. But for the work involved I'll probably just buy from the Irish shop. I only set up the account this morning. Gonna get some eshop credit and get this and The Messenger.

You can just pay with your bank card. I have Revolut as my account card and just pay the exact amount.

Picked this up yesterday and ploughed about 10 hours into it. I believe I am hooked, and while there are references to Dark Souls, I wouldn't say it's like it at all, as it's a lot easier so far. I can see it getting a lot harder, especially the boss battles (only heading back to take on the Mantis Lords after upgrading my Nail). Any time I've died so far have been my own fault, so that's good. The art style is nice, and the exploration is fun, even if I somehow only manage to find the cartographer at the end of each area! I always pick the wrong initial direction!

Someone asked how it compares to Guacamelee 2, and while they are similar games (2D platforming), the similarities end there, they are 2 very different games after that. Guacamelee is more straight forward with a definite direction at all times. Hollow Knight, not at all. You've a vague idea but no real way of knowing how to get there, only moving forward in the general direction you believe you are supposed to go! I'm still early in the game, but I'm taking my time so I can get enjoyment out of it before I eventually give up out of frustration!

Finally bought this a couple of weeks ago and this morning decided I'd take a break from Red Dead Redemption 2 so stuck it on. It has a beautiful art style and the soundtrack is great. Combat seems simplistic but I expect that will change soon enough when I start to level up or gain new abilities. I'm very lost, wandering around with no clue where to go or what to do. I don't mind at all. All will become clear very soon I'm sure.

You'll need to find the map guy and then buy a charm back in dirtmouth that will show where you are on the map. Once you have those it gets a bit easier to navigate.

Also the elder bug in the home village gives you a clue to which area to go to. I'm almost finished it. Great game.

How do I deflect projectiles back to enemies? Do I need a charm? There's a thing in Fungal Wastes that fires explosive projectiles and they hurt when they connect. Saw someone firing them back but they just explode when I try it.

Tried that but they exploded, damaging me so thought maybe you needed a charm or something. Maybe my timing is off. Been doing same as above - running - but doesn't always work.

I sort of ran under them so they ended up killing themselves with the projectile (if that make sense?)
