I hate that show. It's bring us a money making idea and we'll fleece you for a loan.

I'm gonna pop over to Japan and punch the creator of Dragons Den in the mouth.

Gemma got eight votes in Limerick. Hope for the conspiracy theorists yet.

Would a socialist not think it's too much? Should they not think it could be used in a more beneficial way to help the great underprivileged that they go on about so much.

You know he has voluntarily given back over 1 million in his salary and pension entitlememts to the State and he has also refused to take any Oireachtas or Ministerial pensions while he is in office as President?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Is Peter Casey effectively buying the council votes by saying he will offer his salary each month to whatever cause each council deems worthwhile?

Hope for the country you mean? I know nothing about her, but as long as she's not a dragon – she's good enough for me. I am sickened today – I wouldn't mind one dragon running, I would have just looked at it like – oh, he used to be in Dragon's Den, no harm – but three of them? It feels like some sort of sick bet between them, or a personal grudge/dislike between them – or let's see who really has the biggest d*ck – between them. Ireland has three buckos from a television show – the same television show, on the ballot to become president of Ireland. Not one – which is forgivable, but three. Three. Three boys from the one television show. Not one. Three. Three f***ing dragons. Not even two. Three.

I wonder did the four councils who nominated him realise that he backs Irexit?

If it is so important to have a President who won't stand again in seven years, there is only one sure fire option.

Most people haven't ever watched Dragons Den. So I'm guessing most have no clue who Casey is.

Duffy has at least a little bit of a national profile. Casey has virtually none.

It's becoming laughable that so many want to compete in the race when they have little chance of winning.

They are not in it to win.

They are in it precisely because they have no national profile, and they think this is a way to get one. Prime time TV debates, for example, at our expense.

Japers that really seems to bother you. Don't vote for him. Every PR monkey is having a go I think we're lucky to have someone of his caliber running. Thankfully he changed his mind as humans can do.

Japers I never knew he was of such high 'caliber'. He has spent a lifetime being paid huge salaries by the state and I am not aware of anything constructive that he has done for the state. We need to wise up to these people who are full of soft talk and token outrage and contribute very little ATEOTD.

Wow! He has not drawn two of his pensions while he is being paid a huge salary and basically can go from one end of the month to the other without having to pay for anything! We should be so thankful to this man for having come amongst us!

In comparison to other politicians he has achieved things of high calibre imo. While of course not getting everything right.
As well as the day to day work he did as a public rep he was instrumental in setting up TG4, he set up schemes and initiatives to re-invigourate the Irish Film industry (directionless and in the doldrums before him). He was a shining light of democracy and a free media in helping to end the Section 31 measures of the FG FF regime.
He overhauled and re-invested in the network of museums and galleries run by the state.
He was also responsible for reestablishing our network of waterways and canals as tourist amenities and vital contributors to the rural economy.
He was always a strident voice against the war in Iraq and spoke up for the oppressed in places like Cambodia and Chile. At the centre of his politics was a firm belief in equality and justice.
He is a poet and always active champion of the arts.

Not bad for somebody born into poverty and the first of his family to access 3rd level education.

He has also made mistakes and done unwise things.

In comparison to some politicians he may well have done the job he was handsomely paid to do. I for one do not believe in tugging the forelock or tipping my hat to someone who I have helped pay mega bucks in salaries/expenses/pensions for doing their job.

Just off the top of my head he established TG4 and removed section 31 of the broadcasting act.

I think your issue is with the office of President itself.
Which is a whole other debate.
While respect is due to our president and his/her office, deference akin to that given to a monarch is not required. No citizen of a republic would tug a forelock or doff a hat, nor would it be expected of them.

You make it sound like he went out there like some kind of superhero and built the shagging TG4 building himself!
When are we going to wise up and stop fawning over these guys, who are paid mega bucks, for signing off on projects that we the ordinary folk pay for anyway.

:D:D No, a good deal of people were paid to build it and run it and create content for it.

It's how these things work and spill down into the economy, benefiting everyone, culturally, socially and economically.

Neither Mary Robinson or Mary McAleese were ever members of the Dail so have no ministerial pensions to draw down. Mary McAleese was never a member of the Seanad either.

For me, it was always going to be hard not to vote for Higgins. He’s a politician who has advocated for Ireland continuously through his career. He’s educated, cultured and a good spokesperson for Ireland. But I would consider any credible candidate.

Now that the rest of the field is starting to shape up, I must admit that I’m baffled by some of them. The three dragons appear to be running as some sort of weird ego trip. Ní Riada is a credible candidate given her experience, but I’m from the same Gaeltacht and I don’t place much meas in her. Freeman is a strong advocate but being associated with Iona and that kind of zealotry doesn’t sit well with me.

So unless there’s any last minute surprises, Miggledy it is for me.

So who should we vote for exactly? The republican, closeted Iona supporter or in it for the profit dragons?

I'd vote for a wet newspaper over anyone even remotely related to Iona.

    Hmmm do tell!

She is the aunt of Maria Steen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Steen and some people think this automatically means she is an Iona fellow traveller.
