Depends where you are going. It if you are coming from the north and going around the cork road area it is a very similar distance. It is the toll is putting people off.

There should be a bridge at Reginald’s Tower and then make it all a one way system along the quays and Ferrybank Dual carriageway in a circle direction.

...or maybe we need to take our heads out of our arses, and start redeveloping our rail network, in order to try reduce our need for road based transport!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,665 ✭✭✭Deiseen

You want a train that goes around the quay?

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,806 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

....we need a more modern rail network across the country, including light rail networks around our towns and cities, this is whats actually needed to move us away from road based transport, its disturbing to see that we have in fact a green party in government, and they to have been unable to see this reality! if we had such networks, there may not be much need to further expand our road networks and our road infrastructures....

Yeah. Can see that happening alright. Do you have any idea of the colossal cost of rail networks……particularly constructing new ones……rail transport just doesn’t make economic sense in predominately sparsely populated countries such as Ireland…….hydrogen produced by a carbon neural process will be the answer to all man kinds transport needs…

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,806 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

yeah, lets ignore what most other well established and advanced economy's have done, and built significant rail networks.....they definitely dont work, definitely not! lets keep building road infrastructure instead, sure it ll be grand, as unproven technology such as hydrogen will solve it all, even though i think it will and should play a role.... rail makes every bit of sense, from environmental reasons to economic ones, and beyond.... people can spend far less time waiting in traffic on the roads, and potentially far more productive time working while traveling by rail, and potentially moving from point to point faster to.....

...do you realise the colossal costs of not doing this!

People don't want to hear these kind of sensible ideas

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,394 ✭✭✭Asdfgh2020

It makes sense if economics and costs are not a factor but you both need to ‘Crunch the numbers’ a bit….to build the type of rail network that would link say the 20 biggest urban areas in the country and have a frequent and reliable service operating would just have an eye ‘watering cost’……think about the purchase of the lane the compensation To landowners delays in planning process the inevitable cost over runs etc etc…..green hydrogen will become a reality sooner than is envisaged and save the planet..😀

So if we are to build a rail network in Waterford City, where do we build it, I presume where the current road infrastructure is.

As in, if we built a rail line from the clock tower to WIT and the IDA business park the rail line would be placed on the road.

If that's the case then why not just do it with buses. Remove cars, one way systems to ensure a bus lane is never blocked and job done, you also save a fortune in costs as well or are we talking underground?

Like it's a great idea for light rail system but there is not a hope in hell in our life time.

We can't even manage a decent cycling network/infrastructure.

Our Capital doesn't even have a rail line from the airport, even the luas is just under 20 years old.

We can't even get basics such as 24/7 cardiac care, small money, the chance of a light rail network, zero hope.

Imagine all the houses, schools, historic buildings that would need to be demolished to avoid losing the roads.

The same fella would be on here then saying that corporate greed is demolishing people's family homes.

I think having a funicular going up John's Hill would be a great idea.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭Gardner

There is a method to your madness with that proposed route. The route would also run the length of the Quay which in turn should lead to Commercial development of the South Quay's. Another line to run out past Orpen's pub on the Dunmore Road and a further branch into the city from a 2 to 3 stop route in Tramore. A feasibility study at a minimum should be done on it with proposed routes etc.

    Keep dreaming!

Don’t forget to put a light rail system out to the airport while ye’re at it.

    Damien Tiernan on Twitter

"Some breaking news and important news for Waterford City Centre : Cllrs told Beresford Holdings has been chosen as the contractor to develop the Michael Street area : retail, hotel possibly; more details tomorrow on #wlr @wlrfm"

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭Dexpat

Listened to news about this on playback on WLR. No official announcement yet, but a short segment from a councillor outlining the project in general terms. Significantly, contracts have been signed with Beresford Developments for a hotel, apartments, retail and a carpark. This part of town has been crying out for something like this for years and it's great that it has been decoupled from the north Quays project and finally seems to be on track.

Apparently workshops will be provided to Councillors in the next few weeks giving more details, and presumably an official announcement will be made then. Things seem to be really moving ahead in Waterford now. I know we want to see cranes to believe it though!

We'll wait and see, is this the fourth announcement of Michael St/New St area.

07/08 the game changing shopping centre

    2014ish a retail plan 10k square meters

2021ish student accommodation and apartments plan

    2023 let's see

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭Dexpat

Well yeah. It's been a long saga. I think this is going to be more than an announcement of plans though. The Cllr said that contracts have been signed plus the site is fully owned but the council.

Anyone happen to know what is being built in the Woodlands Hotel at present?

After the initial plans were rejected by An Bord Pleanala in 2019, the revised scheme for the Tower Hotel has been approved. Waterford has hugely improved on the tourist front in the last decade but the hotel offering hasn't kept pace. Hopefully this will start soon. I'm not sure how the initial issues relating to the historic facade on Lombard St have been addressed but it seemed to satisfy the planners.

There should be a large hotel on the North Quays and another at Micheal St/Newgate St so together they will make a big difference. Waterford is currently missing out on a lot of conference business as a result of a lack of suitable venues.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,159 ✭✭✭hardybuck

That'll be a big improvement to the area, both visually and in terms of the facilities available.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,695 ✭✭✭Bards

Apart from the building on the corner of lombard street and the mall the other buildings along lombard street are not being included in this phase

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭Dexpat

Thanks. That makes sense. I hadn't heard of any changes to address the issues with the Lombard St buildings. At least it will be a good addition to the hotel. Waterford really has a deficit of quality hotel accommodation in the centre, even compared to much smaller places.

Now if only Seamus Power would get off his hole and redevelop the Ardree.........

Council should CPO the site it’s a landmark building overlooking the city. Over 20 years now at this stage this saga is going on. Owner has zero interest in doing anything with it.

...we really need to implement an appropriate land value tax to stop this kind of sh1t!
