Yet again my ungrateful spawn have gotten me nothing. I provide food, shelter and protection from wild animals and not so much as a card. Never again.

Those are things you *have* to provide to the children you chose to bring into the world. What have you done to deserve a father's day card?

Be good to your father every day that you still can. Just sayin'.

Just like Mothers Day was invented by Hallmark card company for the base commercial motive of increasing card sales at a low point of the year, Fathers Day was also invented for the same reason. This is simply a ploy by gift and card manufacturers to get people to buy more useless **** to clog up their houses with.

My lot are broke enough and perpetually in debt with the high cost of living in Dublin so I do not push the commonly perceived social notion of their being an obligation to buy cards and presents at any time. They have enough parasites hanging off them as it is.

My Father was also of the same mindframe, being self contained in his own persona not to need flattery or tokens of appreciation from his offspring but my mother was a different kind of person, with an insecurity and an ego so fragile that one missed card or birthday would result in furious rage that could last weeks.......

Luckily I always had enough money to sort things out but one of my sisters had to forego meals to buy a card and small presents to keep mum happy......thats why she hates crass commercialism to this day.

Continual consumption is good for us, they say, it's good for 'the economy', but strangely enough, it doesn't seem all that good for our planet, and all its living species, including us. Maybe there's something wrong with 'the economy'!

I’ve got presents, big breakfast served up for me, and now laying on the couch watching Star Wars.

But it all pales in comparison to just having my kids and wife waking me to give me a hug.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

Mother's day was around long before Hallmark
It goes back to the days of the big houses having a designated day allowing the service staff to visit their Mothers

Not only do I not agree with the idea of cards, whatever about a small gift or even breakfast in bed, but id been wondering since 6 am who's birthday it is or what that gift wrapped thingy on the kitchen table is about!! The penny has dropped and, yes, I did receive last year.
No name on it so Ill wait until they all rise from their beds, later.

It was my birthday recently and I didn't get as much as a card, never mind a gift. Yet mine are all very vocal about what they want for their own birthdays. And we're talking gadgets that cost big bucks. It's enough to make you sick. I love my kids but that really opened my eyes. When I brought up the subject, one of them went on about she bought me a card when she was a kid and it ended up in the bin a few months later. I didn't even know about that. Well, they can look out when their own birthdays come around is all I can say.

Your making that age old mistake of doing too much for people .

This year less food and shelter and more wild animals . You can’t continue doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results .

How about a motorbike bike / sports car / young blonde . Seems like a lot of work at your / my age .

How old are the kids . I loved / and still do the old way in Ireland that when you got to 12 / 13 you got money for clothes at christmas ( and not too much ) and when you got to 16 / 17 birthday/ christmas presents came to an end because you were an adult . A great coming of age and who doesn’t want to come of age ?

For those fathers who got recognition today, congratulations. And mothers who raised kids alone, like mine RIP, congratulations too. And for those who were forgotten, at least you know you did your best for your kids. Big hugs to those who weren't recognised. I'm a parent, although not a father. Come to think of it, my brood didn't remember their dad today either. Better give them a prod. Fathers are special. But for those who had a troubled relationship with their fathers, big hugs to you too. Life is such an interesting experience. So different for each and every one of us. Different families have different dynamics. Isn't that true?

Giving human beings stuff for nothing never brings good result .

It has been a disaster for themselves and for anyone around them .

Yes but Irish mother’s day isn’t the same date as the American one. Father’s Day is. So that was imported.

Ah he's already got them covered....

    Birthday: shelter

    Christmas: food

Just because not all heroes wear capes: doesn't let wild animals kill his kids.

Someone get that man a jambon and a can of coke already!
