There's loads 'based' on a true story, but its hard to know how much is fact, vs how much is made up to enhance the drama.

    my own picks would be

    Black Hawk Down
    Lone Survivor
    Rescue Dawn
    Catch me if you Can
    Zodiac
    Spotlight
    Robocop

Summer of Sam or To catch a killer. Both about serial killers. Decent films.

The Experiment was good with Adrian Brody, loosely based on the Stanford Prison experiment which was a dodgy psychology experiment done in the early 70s. They took ordinary volunteers and put them in a prison setting assigning some as wardens and others as prisoners. There was also a film in 2015 afaik based on it called The Stanford Prison Experiment but I haven't seen that myself.

I dont know how true it was to the real story but one of my favourites is Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino. It's such an unusual and bizarre story.

Stander is a fairly enjoyable film based on an Apartheid era South African cop who cracked and started robbing banks. The township riot scene at the start is incredible.

Star Wars It happened A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away but it's true.

I always remember when The Aimee Fischer Story was on and Swapped at Birth or something like that and the way they hyped it up in the ads before showing it.

The dramatizing in some of those made for tv true movies is so awful and cliche.

Cheers for the replies so far. Seen quite a few of them. For anyone not seen it it's been mentioned here. Stander is a very good film.

Does anyone remember those straight to video true story movies from the 80s? They were all from the same studio / production company but I can't remember the name. They were always about things like a girl with anorexia or a wife / child being abused by an alcoholic husband / father.

    There were loads of them.

Changeling starring Angelina Jolie is a "good" movie in a v upsetting way. Remember the Titans is also well worth a watch.

City of God. Brazilian movie with subtitles.

Alpha Dog is another cracker about spoiled teenagers that get mixed up in drugs.

Both probably loosely based on true stories.

Schindler's List would have to get a mention.

    Master of the Universe

Midnight Express is one of my favourites.

Not Without my Daughter is also good but pretty dated now.
