It's not push to start. It's push to keep moving. Or that weird body thrust. Stop doing either and the scooter stops.

What good is that when the Garda website says you must keep scooting. That weird movement is not propelling you forward in any way, scooting must be assisted not activated by doing weird things.

Because until the law is made clearer the Garda's current stance is probably the best info to go on.

The law on assisted bicycles only applies to bicycles.

Why people keep thinking it might apply to scooters is a bit bizarre.

They are generally know as S-pedelec in europe.

No an s-pedelec is one that reaches 45kmh but still cuts out when pedalling stops

Well it's confusing when the law says these scooters are illegal but the Garda say it's legal once scooting is assisted.

Is scooting in the legislation? I don't think so.

Garda have been wrong about a lot of things before. People shouldn't accept things at face value.

Yes but lets face it, the actual enforcement is going to have more impact over the general public than the written law.

Google statute.ie The Garda have never said they are legal. I know about this. Motocross bike road legal? No chance!

    Law is all there!

You can experience an experience on a motorised experience. Just dont have that experience in a public place!

    Otherwise, ....

That's obeying the directions of a Garda.

We have the same thing with all cycle lanes being mandatory when they aren't. That law was changed and changed back. Though there was and is a ton of confusion about it.

Can you scoot a non motorised scooter in a public place?

What's the confusion with bike lanes they were changed to mandatory and then this was revoked. Very straight forward.

In this case with scooters the law says they are MPVs but Garda.ie say they are not, very confusing.

    Garda's website https://www.garda.ie/en/FAQs/?id=4853

The use of these types of scooters has become very popular in recent years, especially with children. The legal position is that if one of these scooters can be powered by mechanical or electrical power alone, and does not require pedalling or scooting for propulsion, then the scooter is considered to be a mechanically propelled vehicle (MPV) in terms of road traffic legislation, irrespective of engine capacity. If such scooters are to be used in any public place, they require insurance and road tax as with any other MPV. The driver would also require a driving licence and is obliged to wear a crash helmet. If the user of such a scooter cannot fulfil these legal requirements, then the scooter should only be used on private property.

    Garda website isn't quoting legislation.

No the Garda are saying that they are not legal.

Garda are equally confused about cycle lanes and scooters. Garda are inconsistent about them.

Gardaí confirmed that cycle lanes are not mandatory

Maybe from individual Garda but I don't see any contradiction to that law on an official Garda website.

As an adult can't cycle on the pavement you'd have assume an adult cant scoot on the pavement either.

Except on the official Garda website where it says they are not a MPV if the propulsion is assisted.

Propulsion bring continuous. A motor bike needs proplulsion of the wrist.

Quote the legislation that uses scoot then...

The legislation is referring to bicycles.

The website seems to be an interpretation of that.

No one is taking about use in private land.
As they are considered MPVs the law states they can’t be used on foot paths.

Why use the word scooter then? Are you saying they don't know what a scooter is?

The Garda would not be sloppy like that any merely make a rough interpretation of the law. They would have the resources to be very accurate.

Youre missing the point. You can't cycle a normal non motorised bicycle on a path. It's got nothing to do with MPV. You can cycle a regular bicycle on a road though.

See the line about electrical power only. That relates to continuous propulsion. So if the motor continues to propel the scooter without the requirements to scoot it’s a MPV

Yes that's exactly what it says and I agree.

Hasn't made anything much clearer has it..
