One of my young fellas is after telling me that he has been categorised as a 'neckbeard' in school. I don't have daily access to them, so can't sit down and discuss this with him.

What is perplexing me is that he doesn't have a beard. To be honest I don't think he would ever be able to produce one that would attract women. He's just that type. Hopeless at sport as well, which is a genuine worry for me.

Should I be worried about this? He's fairly ok academically, but wouldn't have 'street smarts'.

i found a hilariously long and detailed definition of a neckbeard on urban Dictionary. Enjoy OP
A socially inept individual. Smug/self-important for no reason, or shy unless with fellow Neckbeards. When spoken to, will quickly reveal extremely limited social experience. To a normal person they will be definitively near-autistic or aspy.

    Visual cues:

    1. Fedora.
    2. Trenchcoat.
    3. Overdressed.
    3. Greasy hair
    4. Ponytail.
    5. Acne at any age.
    6. Dyed hair.
    7. ****ty beard.
    8. Pedostache.
    9. Wears all black.
    10. Wears all red.
    11. Odd eye behavior, similar to low self esteem (avoiding, darting, or over-compensational staring).
    12. Hand placement. Instead of pockets, usually leave them at sides or cross them.

    You can assume:
    -virgin
    -furry
    -live in their parent's basement
    -watch anime
    -read manga
    -inflated, hollow self esteem
-will laugh at things that arent very funny
    -are or were obese
-educated slightly better than the average person
-will NOT understand the Neckbeard concept
    -card games
    -board games
    -conventions
    -bronie
-hasnt bathed in days, and if you get close, you can confirm, but if you do they will think you're making a sexual pass at them and excrete more stench.

Neckbeards are often found in acting, chior, or other socially maladjusted arts.

The majority of Neckbeards come from middle class white America. Lower class learned how to live while young, and upper class doesnt have the time to, or has better things to do than be a pile of ****.
Persons A and B walk into room filled with guys at computers. All of the men are fat and smelly, with unkempt facial hair of all kinds.

Person A to person B: Oh wow, is this the tournament for <insert fighting game here>?

Person C, from nearby inside the room: Yes, we're awesome like that.

Person B looks at Person C, then at Person A.

Person A looks at Person C.

Person C looks at person A with a straight face and swallows.

Person A to person C: Oh. Thats cool. Is there a bathroom nearby?

Person C: Yeah! There's one down the hall and on the left.

    Person A: Thanks.

Person A and B leave the room.

Person B to Person A: HAHAHAHAHA!!! Holy NECKBEARDS WOW!

Person A: Yeaaaahhhhh..... Alright. Lets go. That was gross.

I think it's shorthand for nerd these days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,912 ✭✭✭SeantheMan

No, it's not related to nerd at all.

Nerds these days don't have the same connotations as they did 20 years ago where they were 'uncool' or people wearing glasses who studied all the time.
People who play computer games, love comics, enjoy marvel films, have a keen interest in something are now know as 'nerds' and if you went by today's definition of the term you would find that most people in their teens to mid 30's are nerds of some sort.

Neckbeard as I understand it, refers to the stereotypical image of an smug, self important, overweight middle-aged fedora wearing man who spends his time on websites and forums such as Reddit, correcting people, being condescending and wasting away his life. He has no interests outside of the internet and those forums. This is due to his having no social skills. His goal is to annoy, troll and correct people.
They are usually pictured as wasters who are unable to get a gf etc.

Ok I followed the link to the other thread where you were on about your young lads and I think you're overreacting a little.

All people are different. People can't be all super hurler jocks. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them. In your other post you were on about adults playing computer games and liking Star Wars. And how you wouldn't want him to turn out like that.
Well, I'm a little offended. I'm an adult who plays a computer game now and then and I like Star Wars. But if you met me I'd bet I wouldn't fit your stereotype at all. Also I dont think its necessarily a bad thing to keep a bit of teenage foolishness and not go all serious as you grow older. Enough bores around already. I think you have picture own your head, a stereotype, and its the wrong one.

Plus like you said teenagers go through phases anyway. Its part of growing up and finding out who they are. Be cool let him be cos one thing is for sure the more you try to mould him in a certain way the more he will want to go the other. If you can remember one thing from your teenage years surely it has to be that one.

    8. Pedostache.

    arts.

Aha, I think I have grasped the concept of the neckbeard (I'd never heard the phrase before to be honest) - I have 2 of my mots cousins in mind as we speak

Fúcking neckbeards the pair of them:D

Wouldn’t make sense in this context as it was applied to a teenager.

The op is right to be worried. There is no place in the world today for technology minded people.

They are way more prevalent in U.S. society than here. I find them a bit odd but have no beef with them.

I only take issue with those of a criminal bent. The rest is just an obligation to tolerate diversity. Different strokes to rule the world.

None of us would be using these yokes to communicate on here if it weren't for some 'neckbeard' sorts doing their thing, so anyone slating them in the thread needs to get mindful of that fat juicy irony.

The term neckbeard is quite broad these days, it generally falls into usually overweight, over friendly, over pushy with women. Hard line views on Anime/MTG/Manga.

Seantheman's description is pretty much the summation.

    No call for that.

I'm sure the OP is just concerned for his son's welfare.

He wants him to lead a happy and productive life.

Is this the good son or the one you don't like? Give him a break John, the youngfella will find his feet. In all honesty, you shouldn't be giving him shyte about your own perceived ineptitude of his. You've already the one son that you can seemingly live vicariously through in your autumn years, let it lie man. Why all the hate? My son has red hair for christsakes, I don't lose any sleep over it. Live a little.

I read the first post of the other thread. Regarding an adult playing video games, have a look in the retro and arcade sub forum. I'm new there but it sounds like the lads there are normal people, work, have kids, wife etc. Can't say it seems they're incapable of a life.

Gaming is the most profitable entertainment industry and the average gamer is generally said to be 35. Nothing wrong with playing video games as it's stimulating for the brain and promotes hand eye coordination.

We don't berate people for being emotional over their favorite sports teams winning/losing, or give people grief for being a movie buff or passionate about music.

As long as they aren't locked in their room with a porn additction or drugs or something it doesn't really matter what they do as long as they have a healthy life. What's important is someone is somewhat social, has a job they're happy in etc. The hobbies don't really matter.

You mentioned sports, just because someone doesn't play football or whatever isn't a bad thing. I'm 26, I built my first computer when I was 15 and generally hailed as a nerd. Playing call of duty online wasn't a thing back then until a year or two later. People didn't use online forums or anything or talk to strange men on gaming forums. Now it's all very common. I despised football in school, more of a fan of cycling. Not everyone likes sports, but there's a chance they would like something else. I used to watch NBA and downhill mountain biking. Both fairly niche.

I don't know age you're referring to but a lot of people don't have a chance to be themselbe until their 20s. It wasn't until I was in college where I met people with similar interests in gaming and computers, started cycling etc.

    Sorry, long post :)

Adolescence can be so so difficult for lads like that, added to that, separated parents and a big ol bang of worry and disappointment coming from his dad.

    The poor kid.

    Ah yes Neckbeards.

Minding the computer infrastructure everywhere that pretty much supports everybody's daily lives, so don't get too ****ing pass remarkable or they'll delete every digital indicator of you ever having existed on this planet.

    Neckbeards

    - bringing Old School Traditionalist Men and Angry Feminist Women together in mutual hatred of them since the 2006 *-

    * seriously its bizarre how two groups that should be completely at odds can agree that neckbeards need to be abused, personally I think it reflects really badly on the feminists though as old school men aren't meant to care about mocking people for having a weird personal appearance, social awkwardness, unpopular hobbies and lacking traditional masculinity , Feminists though it comes across very bad as they are meant to be all for the idea that its ok to be a non-Traditional Man
