Nothing screams "Celtic Tiger" like a 5bed 7bath McMansion in Roscommon with a helicopter pad and what appears to be an adjoining shop with the previous owners name on it

That Roscommon house has a very dark and dreary interior, the landing reminds of a coffin ship.

"This property has been interior designed both inside and out."

    Interesting concept.

Spent longer than i care to admit looking for a ship :o

Again with the slanted upstairs ceilings due to the eaves- like the last McMansion featured here. Build up folks. You're in the middle of a field. Got for the extra few feet!

The furniture is ****e, it's too dark and the rooms don't look that spacious to be honest.

Did one of the previous owners colour their hair with a bit of shoe polish with that stain on the headboard?

Some very strange angles chosen for pictures - either from knee height or else up a stepladder

The estate agent is confident it will attract local and international interest though.

Very much an old style, dark house with some modern appointments

Interior layout and design is terrible with low ceilings as mentioned.
Very dated design for a modern house.
The dark wooden stairs, doors & wall panelling do nothing to give sense of space & increase natural lighting.
Not a fan of the kitchen design too, the worktop & green tinted shelves do nothing for me.

Probably suspected it would feature on this thread.

Is the Helipad not a bit too close to those overhead wires?

Handy helicopter pad for if you need an air ambulance....

Don't like the dark wood everywhere.

What's the craic with the price? €310k seems very reasonable, though, no?

(I'm assuming the shop-front was listed, and therefore couldn't be removed?)

There's no way that was originally a shop. It's in the middle of nowhere, and way too far back from the road. It's someone's attempt at mock heritage. They thatched the roof of their boiler out-house, FFS!

Why are they listing drive times. I want to know fly times.

Better home the floor holds, as it's hiding the empty swimming pool underneath!

Could well have been a shop. Definitely looks like a shop to me, in the style of windows and doors. Perhaps it was the 'reception' for a mechanics or farm supplies or such and they were working whatever business they had on the site of the house?

You got that old photo of the house pretty fast, so perhaps you know the area better than I/us?

If a helicopter has ever landed there, I'd eat my hat.

It's a contentious one tbh because quite a few helipads were built in the Tiger years without planning permission. Many landowners contended that paving part of your land and sticking a "H" on it is an exempted development. And afaik, helicopters are technically allowed to land anywhere outside of controlled airspace provided that they do so in a safe manner; it doesn't have to be a helipad or airport.

So I imagine loads of people just put in helipads with no consideration for overhead lines or whatever, since that was an issue for the pilot, not the builder.

The question of whether they're exempted development has been well answered at this stage; they're not.

Or an estate agent specialising in investment apartments in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria

No I don't; I just scouted around Google satellite view until I found a helipad :D

I could be wrong about the shop. Just that buildings that are old enough to be listed were usually built right on the road, not back off it the way we do now.

And everything else about the building screams more money than sense. If you're going to build a thatched McMansion with tiny windows and a helipad, why not stick a fake shopfront on it?

It's possible that 'M Fahy' was the name of the person who lived there.

A Martin Fahy from Kilmurry died in 2016.
RIP link available from Herr Google.

The Helipad would make a cracking Swing-Ball court.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,823 ✭✭✭✭flazio

You could go over to Geohive and check if there was a building there as far back as 1995. If it was just a field then it's somebody's stupid notions (RIP).

Ah, no, I do understand that a traditional 'shop' (groceries/newsagents etc.) would be built practically on the road itself, but I do know many people who have businesses run from the houses in workshops (cabinet makers, mechanics, metal fabricators etc.) so I was just speculating that may have been a reason for the store-front look.

I'm not actually saying it is listed, but my first thoughts were that it may be (it looked to me like someone else had bought the house, and done it up half-heartedly to sell on, and I couldn't understand the reason for keeping the 'shop front' part, so 'listed' was my go-to presumption).

Oh, I would assume so. You often see on old shops or businesses, the signage is often just the name of the business owner, though.

It just seems unusual that it's part of a house design without some business element having been attached to it. Nonetheless, for 310k, assuming it's not got a million hidden issues, it seems decent value to me.

If I had €310k to spend, I'd be looking at it.

I think I read an article about this place; it was being used in part for therapy for autistic children or similar so that might explain the screening room.

There was no building listed on the helipad house site on the 1888-1913 OSI map.

    549568.png

There was something there by 1995, though.
