Not sure how well known this is (and surprised nobody has mentioned it here until now) but there will be quite a few changes to the Sky EPG on 1st May.

The biggest is that SD channels (for which HD-swap applies) get moved to the 800s and +1 channels to the 200s. There’s also a couple of changes to the BBC channels. BBC Four gets moved to 143, but bizzarly BBC Two on 142 is now SD and BBC Two HD gets moved to 347, joining in the 340s a group of U.K. channels that don’t have Irish HD versions and so can’t avail of HD swap.

    Anyway - the list:

    Still no channel 4 HD...

Overall it's a nice reshuffle getting the SD channels out of the way of the HD ones.

However what I don't see listed is BBC 2 NI but discussions on Digital Spy seem to point towards. BBC 1&2 defaulting to the NI versions.

I don’t see that it would make sense for BBC Two not to be HD swapped otherwise. I can see a lot of people complaining “where’s BBC Two HD gone”. At least one will either be told or form the opinion that Sky don’t do the HD version any more.

Also, for the first time on ROI Epg, 954 will be BBC1 London (AD), 969 will be BBC 2 Eng (AD) and 976 will be BBC 1 HD (AD). What does the AD stand for ?

Would it be Audio Description? With the sign language?

They’re not necessarily provided together. Audio description is like a narrator telling you what is happening. For the visually rather than hearing impaired.

But why is it necessary to have BBC1 London, BBC1 HD and BBC2 for AD ? Is there not AD on BBC 1 and 2 NI ?

Apparently it’s only on BBC One London and BBC Two England.

It’s a pity they didn’t take this opportunity to put RTÉ News Now and Oireachtas TV on 503 and 504. Those slots are unused in Ireland as we don’t get those BBC Channels. And it gives prominence to our own news channels. If we were ever to get BBC News, in that unlikely event it could go at the end of the news section.

As well as being good for the visually impaired, having BBC1 London will give an alternative to local NI news and political programming. It's a pity CH4 HD isn't being added, but at least most CH4 programming is available in HD on the All4 player via Sky.

BBC One HD was already the England rather than NI version. I’m not sure if this is changing as part of the revamp nor what the reason is that the SD version was NI and the HD version England.

I’m afraid we won’t get Channel 4 HD until and if C4 have Irish adverts on it. Same reason there’s a couple of HD channels that don’t do HD swap in Ireland (though at least, under the new regime, all these channels will be together in the 340s rather than up with the swapped HD channels in the 800s).

There is no BBC2 HD NI on satellite, thats why Sky give us BBC2 HD England. Other forums suggesting BBC1NI HD is going on 141 and we'll have to switch to 976 to get BBC1 HD England. Also, how come CH4 don't mind CH4HD being on Virgin as well as CH4 SD ?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,438 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

That’s true in relation to BBC Two, but it doesn’t explain the odd BBC One situation. As you say it may be rectified when this switch happens.

Not sure why the C4 situation is different on Virgin.

CH 100 now on Sky, detailing changes, but it only mentions the documentary channels and the +1's. No mention of BBC 2 HD being moved and BBC NI HD going to 141, or the other BBC's appearing in the 900's.

Its probably either exactly the same as the UK version or at least using the same script.

If I have manually changed channel numbers in tvheadend will I need to reset them after this change ?

Sky aren't interested in FTA channels they cant make money off.

As speculated, 141 is now BBC One NI HD.

I have ITV 3&4 in the +1 tab, that has to be a glitch.

I see itv1+1 is on the EPG now. Maybe some blasted day we'll get itv1hd on it too :(

Uggh. When I ordered Sky, I figured I’d get enough docs on BBC, Channel 4, Yesterday and PBS so didn’t get the ‘docs’ pack.

Discovery et all are mostly reality shows now. Moving them lower on the EPG and having to scroll past unsubscribed channels is just going to make me use my favourites list all the time.

Thankfully they are still giving us BBC1HD England, for those who want to avoid the NI opt out programming.

I presume that's via the card trick or whatever it's called now ? If it's not, it is obviously a mistake, for a start, why has it no.000 and TV3 will demand that it's taken down pronto.

No card trick. It's just there.

That's good, I would love to think it will stay, but the 000 numbering is definitely a sign of some kind of error and expect it to disappear soon, unfortunately.
