I bought a broken N64 DD 4 or so years ago for something mad cheap like 20 quid. The dude I bought it from reckoned it had been water damaged as it just wouldn't boot and there was zero life in it. Opened it up and had a look but couldn't find anything wrong.

Was rewiring some gaming stuff this evening (again!) and I accidentally booted my N64 without a game in it. This happened

The DD Mario boot screen?!

No power LED on the DD but it's booting. I'm in shock!

This is awesome. I remember reading about the n64dd back in the day and highly anticipating its release. I was gutted when Nintendo shelved the project. I always think back to what might have been!, if the N64 DD were a success

Unfortunately not! So have to stick with Mario running around the screen and 'Insert Disk' in Japanese for now. :D

Going to see if I can find a cheap game to test it out, Simcity 64DD seems to be the least expensive.

Excellent, managed to find and order a decently priced CIB copy of Doshin the Giant.

Just have to wait for it to arrive from Japan now. If it works I'll look into getting the F Zero expansion. Always been interested in giving that a go.

Official Nintendo Magazine (UK) hyped the ever loving outta the 64DD as though it was the add-on to end all add-ons and the zip. There wasn't even a slow-roll, it just went from "the impending 64DD is gonna make you its bitch" to "yeah, not happening" in no-time.

Reminds me of a few dedicated console magazines.
One went from "Sega release AAA games to show who's the boss, Burning Rangers/Sonic R" to.... well, oblivion.
Another was the 3DO magazine, bless it's little heart.
It was trumpeting how much better the likes of Wing Commander III, Road Rash and Need for Speed were on 3DO compared to the PS, citing colour depth, but the truth was everyone was buying into the PS hype and no one was buying a 3DO!
    Then the mag just ceased....

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

To be fair the Official sega magazine at the time didn't hide the fact that the Saturn was dead and ran a lot on import games and even covered a lot of dreamcast stuff towards the end. They made a good show of it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

I really liked the 3DO mag tbh.
They knew the jig was up though, even though they were pushing the M2, and as the machine slid into last place behind the Nintendo, Sega and Sony efforts.
    Still love the machine though!

Well this gets better, the light I'd assumed was a power light is actually a disk reading light - so of course it's not coming on as I've no disk in it!

So it would appear it's working 100%.

Trying to resist splashing out on a FZero expansion kit ... Argh why does post from Japan have to take so long??

I'll trade you a PSX for it! (no, no I won't)

You'd need to trade a PSX along with 350-400 euro, they seem to be going for an average of 500 these days

I suppose I won't know if it's fully working until I get that disk in the post, probably prone to mechanical failure similarly to the Famicom disk system.

@r333! things, and seen the light. Don't get me wrong, I'd still love a dedicated room for a retro collection, but as that's not a reality, I needed another way to enjoy these great games. I'm playing games far more than I used to, because of the convenience of emulation, and with how good it is. It's amazing actually, the amount of scutter you read about emulation from people who's only experience with it was zsnes from 1997 or something.

For anyone with a 4k screen, enjoy :)

    That is actually me!
97 is the last time I was "current" with emulation, probably because there was so little of it!
Ah, disk spanning, there's a lost skill right there....

There's always solder, but joking aside, I can see FPGA becoming the purists favourite eventually.

I still think anything after the 16 bit era the emulation is utter garbage. PS1 and N64 are a total **** show of dedicated plugins to try and brute force proper emulation on specific games. Dolphin looks gorgeous but outside of the big games it's very inaccurate and it's probably the same on the big games just with dedicated tweak per game to try and brute force that as well.

Cycle accurate or FPGA or GTFO.

And anyway even with these consoles getting SD card options is far better than dealing with rubbish emulation.

I feel it's a tad dramatic to call every emulator post 16bit utter garbage. Many of them have made tremendous progress over the last 18 months, especially the likes of Cemu (see above video of BotW running at 4k >30fps, something Nintendo will do in around 15 years), Dolphin, and while RPCS3 is still very preliminary, it's massively impressive. Even the difficult Saturn has made strides, with SSF allowing near perfect play on a large number of titles.
PS1 and N64 are a total **** show of dedicated plugins to try and brute force proper emulation on specific games.

You're referring to High Level Emulation I take it? It's a bit of a stretch though in writing something like an NES or SNES emulator that's cycle-accurate, and in writing a cycle accurate emulator for a Gamecube, Wii, etc. As consoles became more complex, emulation of them became exponentially more difficult too (outside of finding hardware documentation). You'll be a long time waiting on total Low Level Emulation of anything post N64 (Cen64 is aiming for cycle accurate LLE of N64).

So is high level emulation garbage? Not at all. If it was, you wouldn't be able to use your real Wii's NAND file in Dolphin, and browse the Wii Shop Channel, download demos, buy points, and make purchases ;) Plus, as computing requirements increase, it's not exactly efficient to rely on LLE, when HLE can achieve the same result but consuming a LOT less resources. Many emulators use a hybrid of LLE & HLE to achieve their results.
Dolphin looks gorgeous but outside of the big games it's very inaccurate and it's probably the same on the big games just with dedicated tweak per game to try and brute force that as well.

See above. Per-game tweaks are there, but truthfully, well written emulators like Dolphin can save any tweaks that need to be made, thus they only need to be made once. Any changes you make, be it changing the sound emulation from HLE to LLE, or changing GPU options, will be saved and never have to be dealt with again.

There is a bit of work involved in getting everything set up properly, I know, I've done a TON of it...but it's really well worth it in the end. It's like hardware collection, you get out of it what you put in.
Cycle accurate or FPGA or GTFO.

You say that as if FPGA is some be all end all solution. It isn't. If you don't believe me, believe Byuu (the guy who wrote the cycle accurate Snes emulator) - https://byuu.org/articles/fpgas-arent-magic/

    This is true.
With moving parts and drives wearing out, the hardware should last forever, with a little maintenance.
The SD/HDD options should mean that my grandkids will be playing Dreamcast and PS2 games, may the god's help them!

Aaaand it's not reading the disk. That would have been too easy wouldn't it?!

It's trying to read the disk but making a strange noise and giving me an error 01. There's a good tutorial video on YouTube as to how to potentially fix it (the bit that reads the disk is just jammed)

Project for this weekend I think!

Here's the video showing the fix for the error I'm getting. Hopefully that's all there is to it, just popping the cover off and releasing a stuck part.

Well this morning has been a disaster

Opened up the DD, tried to release that piece but it wasn't stuck, so that wasn't the problem. 'balls I think' and decide to put it all back together just to check.

No game working and now for some reason the picture is rolling.

Disconnect the N64 and the picture is rolling on just the console..

Tried a few different RGB cables and inputs but the picture is still rolling. Feck, somehow the mod on my console is after getting banjaxed.

I checked the bottom of the n64 and there was a switch installed I'd never noticed before (maybe to turn the mod on and off)

Problem was, installing the DD had actually buggered up the switch as it was protruding beyond the bottom of the console.

So I opened up the n64 to fix the switch, managed to get it back in place - reassembled and now my N64 won't switch on at all. No power light, nothing.

So I've gone from a N64 DD not reading disks to both a broken DD and broken modded n64.

I feel if I continue any further it will only result in me standing beside the flaming remains of my apartment.

Sounds like something has probably come lose, related to the mod/switch. Disassemble again & have a good look over everything.
