You’ll usually know by the size of the mountains of scrap!

Are scrap prices getting strong? Brought 4 alloys and a battery in and got €50 into my paw. Thought I'd see a tenner for the lot, not a tenner a pop.

Steel is relatively strong compared to a year ago. Once in 2012 it peaked at £170 a ton, what fantastic times those were!

Aluminium has gone down a bit this past few days (aluminum tariff looks to have affected prices) but is usually consistent enough otherwise, my normal price was about €15 for a 15 inch alloy. You'd be best hanging onto other alloy wheels until prices increase again

Haven't scrapped batteries in a while, waiting to get near the ton before I go again so I wouldn't be up on the current price. Last time I scrapped batteries they were £600 a ton about 3 years ago for reference

I might be going to look at a bangernomics car in a dealership tomorrow. If I decide to buy it, would they usually take my current banger off me and scrap it? I want to get rid of it, and if possible tomorrow.

Only had a set of four and the E36 is tight for space in the garage as is so I wasn't in the mood for storing them nor leaving them in the elements. I'm delighted as I only bought them for the tyres that were on them and got them for a great price.

Wonder what the story is with old galvernise and scrap prices. Full hay shed to tear down, a number of girders too..be nice to get a few beans for it.

Anybody have a set of JVC/ Pioneer radio removal keys around Limerick by any chance?

So the 330 is brimming with tech but bizarrely the the bluetooth was for phone calls only. No bluetooth audio streaming. Did a little research and turns out my car has all the hardware needed, but the feature just needs activated via coding. This is where BM make almost 100% profit on an option called "enhanced bluetooth" for new orders, as it's literally ticking a box in the software. A colleague today brought in his laptop and E-SYS software so we went at it. He had already done this to his F30 so with him their it went quite smoothly. The iDrive now supports two phones connected via bluetooth at the same time which I will find useful. But the main thing now is it does A2DP streaming.

Another box ticked. Think I will order my own cable and get the software too now.

BMW are gifted at robbing you for options and things that should be standard. But it gets worse.
Their latest wheeze is that they have changed apple car play from being a one off cost option to being a yearly subscription that you pay annually to keep it running in your car.
To add insult to injury, people that already paid for the option when it was a one off when they bought their cars are finding that when the car is serviced and the cars software is updated apple car play has been changed to having a finite life that will require further payment after a certain period like some connected drive services.
I’m not even sure if it is legal for BMW to do this.

Yeah I spotted that on the connected drive price list, 300 quid for 3 years. A lot of those extra features are quite expensive for how useful they would be. That concierge service and BMW online that I paid for today are a load of balls. Spotify app still isn't working for me though via iDrive. I called BM customer service from the iDrive and they told me to buy BMW online as it's needed. I didn't think that was the issue but paid for it anyway and still no joy. I think the issue is that I have an Android phone and that Android integration is poor in general. At least I can play via Bluetooth now but it would be nice to have the Spotify app running on screen.

My 530d is still registered on the BMW connected drive UK system even though the online services have expired, when I went to reactive the service on the website it was looking for a UK address for billing. I went onto the Irish site and tried to add my car there and it told me that my car was already registered in another country and diverted me back to the UK site. I was going to use my work company's UK address but just didn't bother in the end.

Anybody know much about the 2007/2008 BMW 116i? N43 engine? Any notorious issues to look out for? Or good owners forums to do a bit of research for? Hoping to go look at one with 60k miles in the next few days for the girlfriend. Thanks!

Timing chains can rattle/stretch/snap on them. ABS module is a weak point too. Look for one with a good service history especially around oil servicing.

Was this some time ago? I had no issue setting up the app. Previous owner confirmed that the car was off his app then. To be honest, you're not missing much anyway.

Them n43's go through coil packs at a steady pace too. Not a massive issue but a bit of an annoyance all the same.

Yep recently, I know I can remove it from the UK site and move it to the Irish site but as you said it's not worth the effort.

I have a set but some are missing. A bloody finger later and no joy is why I ask!

Have you got two keys? That should be all that is required on jvc, pioneer and most aftermarket units

I have a draper kit with lots of pins and keys but a good chunk of them are missing. The JVC/Pioneer ones are a square head with 2 dents to push the pins in and none of the others would work..

I am going to book the VRT appointment for the car today. When I bought a new Golf a few years ago I put a D reg on it, as the alternative is DL for me. I don't care what reg is on a car, but for the Golf I thought it might impact resale a little. Not that it mattered for that car as I exported it in the end. So for the 330d, should I just stick a DL reg on it and forget about it or would that put potential buyers off in future? Keep in mind when I come to sell it, it will probably be at least 8 years old at that stage so I think I makes feck all difference. I just know the DL reg has a bad name to some.

If I seen the two side by side I'd buy the D reg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,919 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

Personally a DL would make a difference to me with a car like that (from an enthsiast's POV) but maybe not to the majority of people.

This car sold before I got a chance to view it, so the hunt continues :(

@vintagevrs I would rather a D reg when I buy it off you! LOL.

Similar to the Golf R, a 330d is going to have a limited market and chances are that most of that market maybe in or around the Dublin area who like their cars to have a D reg. For that reason I would stick a D reg on it. I didn't care either about letters on a reg but got a D reg on the 530d over a L reg as the reality is that it makes a difference to a lot of other people when selling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,397 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Yeah ye are all confirming what I thought. Problem now though is that I need proof of address in Dublin (bill or something). That wasn't needed with the Golf as the dealer sorted it. Hmmm, I might have to get creative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

DL suggests it's been raced or rallied (massive sweeping statement about the majority of Donegal residents I know), I'd have D every time on one of those.

For me it makes no difference, although like all Cork people, I want a C reg over one of those pesky D regs on my car:pac:.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

I'd get my home county, regardless of where it is. It's your car, shouldn't be trying to please future owners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,397 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

It's not trying to please future owners. It's about maximising resale value, which is all about me. :pac:

:D:D You are dead right! I'll be in the market for a 3er estate in three years time, so don't think I am messing!

Best of luck with it either way. Have you any siblings living in Dublin that could register it for you?
