    Many thanks @Gumbo

Have seen people mentioning Zappi, Wallbox, EO, etc. But very few discussions on Ohme Pro. So was a bit worried whether it’s a solid option.

I have been advised to approach Council to seek approval for EV charger install in front of Apartment/Duplex. OMC approval will take place later.

Any one here managed to get such an approval? What information was required. It is a new 2022 build and I have specifically assigned car parking spaces. Thanks

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,191 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Is the parking space on OMC lands or council lands?

You're being asked by the management company to engage with the council, knowing full well the council can't say yes, so then the OMC just shrug and tell "sorry, nothing we can do" and they never get sucked into an argument with you.

Yes, I'm surprised the management company didn't ask him to swing by the local hardware for a long weight and a glass hammer while they were at it.

neighbour needs a charger, are easy go the best bet at 1200, anyone else offering the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 164 ✭✭Jjohnrockk

Footpaths are owned by council. Hence they cannot approve.

is this relevant? Please note TIC us yet to be completed. Taking in charge to council and OMC.

In relation to planning, the current planning system supports the roll out of electric vehicles. The development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is exempt from planning permission under Section 4(1)(h) of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended, where development does not materially affect the external appearance of the structure and must be installed by an undertaker authorised to provide an electricity service. The exemption relates to removing the requirement to obtain planning permission only. Works being undertaken to install infrastructure for LEV charging/refuelling also must comply with the requirements of the building regulations.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,191 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

That’s the SI for providers. Note the wording “must be installed by an undertaker authorised to provide an electricity service”

You can’t be exempt to install something that don’t on your property either.

€599 for the wallbox from easygo seems to be the best offer at the moment.

Thanks..council saying talk to OMC and OMC saying go to council.

Had the exact same issue and installer changed RCBO to Hagar and no issue since. Installer has replaced several with same, well known issue.

OMC is the correct route. The OMC are fobbing you off. Has the paths and roads been taken in charge yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 164 ✭✭Jjohnrockk

The paths and roads are not been taken in charge yet. Seems they are escaping the responsibility. It is a new build and Annual meeting took place few days ago. Council has clearly written that reach out to OMC.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,191 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

OMC are fobbing you off then. The council cannot give you permission for it.

    you need OMC approval.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,733 ✭✭✭✭josip

The OMC will only bother their ho ho ho about it if some of the apartment directors are also residents, drive EVs and need one for themselves. The directors might then be able to annoy the OMC enough to get something done.

I'm conscious this may have been answered. But whats the wisdom now on best charger if you aren't planning on getting solar.

Good smart controls are probably the most important thing for me. E.g. being able to time it on and (I believe the harder bit) off for cheap electricity periods.

Quotes I have are Zappi for 1500

    SyncEV for 1200

Wallbox for 1200-1300 (waiting on confirmation)

Just recently had the ohme home pro installed and very happy with it. Perfect for various rate electricity and cost €649 after grant with goelectrical. Includes a sim card for connectivity so no need to worry about poor wifi reception as long as the area of installation has a good mobile network connection - https://www.goelectrical.ie/product/ohme-home-pro/

Went back and forth between the Wallbox and Ohme as they were one of the cheaper smart units on the market but the reviews slightly favoured the ohme and the screen is a nice bonus :) Cable management could but a little neater but nothing a third party cable and gun holder can't fix.

Out of the three options above though, I'd go with the wallbox, as far as I know, it also can support solar if that was an option in the future for you.

    Hope this helps a little.

Got a wallbox pulsar max installed there

One query is the holster and the dust cap for the plug. It doesn't seem to sit in the holster well with the cap on but does without it. Dunno what way it should be. Don't want to risk damaging it with the elements but at the same time don't want it falling out and hitting the ground

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭cromelex

It only seems to fit the holster without the cap. I have had mine for over a year now, and always holster it without the cap. This seems to be sufficient to prevent any damage/wear on the plug.

It won't fit in with the cap on.

You can take the cap off, and put it in the holster, but I just leave the cap on, and leave it wrapped up, and don't bother with the holster.

The installer put a metal hook on the wall as well, but it doesn't really hold the cable properly, as it's too stiff, and the "hook" is more of a flat L shape.

Bit of a design flaw. The whole cable management for the Wallbox is a bit **** really. I'm considering just putting a U-hook like this on the wall, and putting the cable/charger head hanging onto it: https://www.screwfix.ie/p/smith-locke-heavy-duty-screw-in-anti-slip-u-storage-hook-black-25mm/7903j

just get yourself on the OMC board, should be easy as generally no one wants to do it. The management agent is just a company employed by the OMC which is run by the directors.

Help! My better half has ordered an EV for July. She has gotten the SEAI grant and I've been told to sort out the external charger. Haven't a clue where to start.

Do I buy the box and then get a sparks to fit or which company is best to do an all in one supply and fit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,556 ✭✭✭blobert

    Hello there,

We're putting in an EV charger in a new build that will have 3 phase power and loads of solar power (up to 40kw) so we'd like to do pretty much all charging from solar (cars will be at home during the day)

I was looking at a 3 phase charger (I liked the look of the Wallbox Pulsar) with 1 x type 2 connection but the issue is my wife's Leaf is Type 1 while my soon to arrive Tesla will be type 2. I know any future EVS are likely to be type 2 but we like the Leaf and will probably keep it for a good few more years.

So options seem to be (1) getting a charger with one socket and swapping the cables every time we want to charge one of the cars. This is quite a bit of faffing and will lead to cars being unplugged (clearly mine by my wife) and not getting charged.

So the perhaps better option might be a charger with 2 x type 2 sockets so both cars can be plugged in. And then when my wife gets a new EV we just use a type 2 cable with this and are able to charge both future cables.

It also probably makes sense to be able to charge both cars at once on a sunny day. The Leaf will take 6kw and the Tesla 11kw so it's worth having a 3 phase charge.

Anyway I'm having trouble finding a 3 phase charger with 2 x type 2 sockets. Is there one I should be looking at?

The alternative might be 2 x wallbox pulsar or similar but I'd imagine it would be neater just having one, cheaper from electrician to install etc.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I should also probably add that it would be good to be able to control the charger via ethernet as I doubt wifi will reach it from the house.

Get a three phase tethered Zappi and a type 2 to type 1 adapter for the leaf.

Tbh, you might find yourself charging the Leaf on the granny charger during the summer months with that much generation.

Thanks very much, I didn't know such a thing existed, somthing like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Evcars-EV-Charging-Adapter-Type-1-to-Type-2-Max-32A-Mini-Car-Charger-Converter-SAE-J1772-to-IEC-62196

That would make things a lot simpler.

I would ideally prefer a charger with 2 x sockets but I'm not sure if there is anything suitable.

Other way around. You'll need a type 2 to type 1 adapter.

If you don't care about Solar divert, you could just pick up an commercial 22kW charger such as this one used by eCars.

I can t name any company's and dont know what part of the country you are in, but hit the google machine for EV charger installers Cork for example ev charger installers cork - Google Search and this will give you a list of companies that will supply and fit and handle all the SEAI grant info that you need.

The first thing they will do is survey your house to make sure your wiring and supply cables from ESBN (The Tails) are big enough to handle the increased electrical load to your house. You might have to get these upgraded first and could cost a bit also...(if you are a new enough house you should be grand)

Call a couple of them to get a few quotes to make sure you are not getting taken for a ride. These companies normally will handle all the work or will advise you what they need doing before they can install.
