Hey guys, recieved a letter in the post today from Audi about a recall on my A4 for "Servicing Heater Element 80C6". They say the auxiliary heater element in the air conditioner may fail and in rare cases this may lead to smoulder damage or even fire. Just wondering did anyone else recieve this letter and whats your thoughts on it?
    Cheers

It's a safety recall so it will be a freebie, what is there to think about?

Im just a bit wary of getting it done in case they also apply the emission update aswell which i do not want after reading a lot of horror stories about it. They did say you can turn off the aux heater through MMI so i'll do that in the morning.

Id get this done as it must be a real fire risk if being recalled, I would however instruct in writing and in no uncertain terms that you did not want the emissions fix applied.

Yep. Audi asked me about getting the emissions fix done on my A6 but I said no thanks. They had a letter for me to sign but that was it. No big deal at all to be honest.

Would you trust them not to do it though ? You'd never know for sure and if your car wasn't right afterwards then you'd never know if they did or not.

Depending on the car you could check if the "flow straightner" was fitted.

To be fair if you ask when you are booking in for it not to be done, they won't do it.

I didn't know there was any hardware involved at all.

The 2.0 engines is just a software fix but 1.6's get a flow straightener.

Hard to picture how much of a benefit that could have but i'm not an engineer.

Anyway, OP definitely get the recall done. If you don't want the emissions fix, request that when dropping off yours keys and it'll be fine.

They will take apart the dashboard to replace the heater I believe - will it be the same after putting back together?

    A real horror story alright.

    A real horror story alright.

My sarcasm detector is in for a recall, the sincerity sensor is a fire hazard.. so not sure if serious or not. :D

I didn't get a letter as car bought in UK, but I got a notification in the MyAudi web app just now about the same fix. car was at dealers in Cork in Feb though and they didn't mention anything about it (campaign has been going for a while). I didn't think my car has the aux heater though (one you can control remotely to warm up car) and only had the "supplementary heater" which I think is different. my car apparently isn't affected by emissions scandal but is yours def affected? I would hate to send it in and have them mess with that side of things

Going on how bad the Opel Zafira heater resistor fires were, it might be better not to leave your kids in the car unaccompanied until you get it sorted :

My car was bought in the UK aswell its a 2012 and was imported here in 2013 and i have got 3 letters about the emissions and then this letter about aux heater. Friend of mine brought his 132 into audi for emissions fix last summer and has had no trouble at all with it. As for the heater issue i have not got it done yet

A flow straightener is needed in front of all MAF sensors to get an accurate reading (look at a 2.0 sensor and it has a screen like pretty much all cars) leaving it out on purpose was part of their way of fudging the results on the 1.6 engines

I got the same heater recall letter for my Audi Q5, didn't pay attention, thought it was amother emission recall request letter. The car stopped with a bang and smoke. Got car to own mechanic who disconnected the Coolant Solenoid Valve 4H0121671B, lead to it was melted. Waiting now for Audi appointment to refit.

This thread reminded me - I passed and A4 that suffered what looked like an electrical fire last week. Front right wing area.

I would recommend to turn off the auxiliary heater on the MMI its under AC.

You could pull a fuse it you wanted also.

Once we dont get rattles galore after the repair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 alsiet2017

no rattles after repair for me anyway - they do not take off the dash. they gain access through glove box.

Any idea what years are affected by this recall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

My wife's car had this done in the last service late last year. It's a 2013 2.0 diesel... The emissions fix was done too and it's been fine. No discernible difference to how the car drives/performs since.

No i never bothered with it after i just turned it off on the MMI and left it. Have you any pics of the warning light?

Has anyone got the work done? I heard the dash has to be taken out something im very wary of. Is it ok and safe just to turn off the auxiliary heater element on mmi?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

It's not dash out on RHD cars. Very straightforward job. They advise you turn it off until you get the recall done.

They aren't writing to you for the craic, it's a real concern with them. Plenty of examples of cars going up and you'd occasionally see one smouldered when doing the recall.

It's a fairly old recall now so most of the cars have been repaired a long time.

Replacing the element. You'd be in and out of the car in an hour ish.

Was a serioisly popular recall, at the height of it the workshop could be doing 5-10 cars a day, technicians would be very familiar with it.

Would have far more concerns over the car not getting the recall done than i would with the car getting it done.

I'm just worried I'd have a squeaky dash after that's all. Thanks for reply..

The only way you'd have a squeaky dash after it is if you had a squeaky dash before it. As above all that's done on RHD cars is remove the glove box.
