Google maps confusing my address with someone elses

About a month ago I started getting visits from nurses asking to speak to "Rita", then a visit from the gardai about a Phonewatch alarm going off. Then today someone arrived with ready made meals.

All were looking for a property that when they search on Google maps brings them to my house!

I've tried editing the address on Google maps but it hasn't worked obviously. What's the best way to contact them?

It takes them quite a while to get round to the suggested edits, but they do eventually get to them.

Best of luck, I been on to google multiple times over the years to update an incorrect name and it's still wrong. They did change it a couple of times but not to the right name.

Do you have an email for them?

I dont, I did it all through the maps app.

To make sure I'm doing it right...

    - I search for my address

    - I right-click the red tear drop on the map and select "Report a data problem"

then what? No form appears or anything

You should get an editable map.
Are you logged into a Google account when you are doing it?

If I do it on a PC in a web browser, I get a pop up top left that allows me to a) move the position and/or b) change the address. Never tried it in the app.

Excellent working on Firefox and not Chrome... bizarre

I'm using FF too but I get exactly the same window if I use Chrome, so that's not the problem.

If I'm not signed in to Google though I get a smaller pop up telling me I have to sign in to report a problem.

i know when i used it in the car on my phone recently that it was way off in terms of directions by not offerring the best route, and the time to destination was way off. Before phones and Google maps had reached a certain point of accuracy and reliablity I rarely used that kind of thing, instead I used a purpose built car GPS device, now gladly I've kept it in the car and have used and charged it occasionally as Google maps has taken a turn for the worse, good not to rely on it or any one thing, I still keep a few OS maps available.

What I had to do was drag a new pointer in order to register the update. I positioned the new pointer over the existing pointer.

It wouldn't accept me just editing the address of the existing pointer, said I had to "drag pointer to the new location"

If the nurses/guards/meals were hot frankly I'd not complain.

So this is still happening. I'm still getting people arriving to my door as Google Maps is directing them here despite the actual property being 1km away.

Is there a direct way to contact Google? Editing the map hasn't helped despite me doing it 2 months ago.

Did you get the email confirming the change?

    Update:

    Got an email from noreply-maps-issues@google.com
    "Success
Based on your suggestion, the listing for ____________ has been added to the map"

Second time the Gardai have arrived at my place now "because a panic alarm went off"

    Got me out of bed.

Just my luck for google to mix up my address with some sickly panicked nutjob :(

It's now 8th November and I've had a delivery for an oil change at my address.

I don't even have an oil tank.

The delivery guy has tried to deliver the oil 3 times now.

How the hell do I get Google to update the map, as doing it via Maps doesn't work?!!?

Are there house numbers on your road or are you in the country? Just trying to understand how they could confuse “21, Jump St” with “1, Sesame St”.
I can’t help with Google maps, but could you put a house number or something that would keep the free stuff and sexy nurses from turning up at your door?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,933 ✭✭✭daheff

how far away from you is the correct address? are we talking a couple of doors or miles away ?

do you have your door number up & visible?

It's more like my address is

21 Jump St, Cool Areaville, Dublin

but the other house address is

    21 Cool Areaville, Dublin

I can see how it's confusing on the system, but why the hell can I not manually say... "no this house is NOT 21 Cool Areaville, Dublin" ??

yeah..both houses have number up on door... that's not the issue. Issue is with Google.

Other address is about 3 miles away. They're old folks so aren't likely to contact Google about it and probably aren't even aware of the issue, instead wondering why all the delivery men are confused.

If it comes to it I may just have to go over to the house and tell them "always instruct delivery men on how to get to your property instead of relying on Google Maps".

The problem is that different delivery men/nurses come, so they likely won't have any idea about the specific requirements of getting to the address.

I'm just going to have to get a permanent plaque made as my written notes keep getting washed away in the rain.

have you checked that the Eircode is displaying the right address too?

If Eircode is wrong it might be harder to get Google to correct it. If its right, suggest you give this link to google too.

I understand its annoying (i keep getting other peoples emails to my gmail), but other than leave a sign inside your door saying your house is XYZ, not ABC XYZ you will need to wait until Google get their side sorted. And even then, theres a good chance delivery people will still get the address wrong.

Might be overkill but have you considered reporting it to the Data Protection Commissioner?

They do have a responsibility to keep personal data accurate. There's an argument that an address on a map is not personal data - might be worth a try though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

Put the eircode in for each property and check they go to the right building/house, many drivers now just put the eircode in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,076 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

There's no Eircode on the addresses.

I'll just get a laminated sign put up... not exactly a sightly thing to have on your front door, but it has to be LARGE and CLEAR otherwise it will be missed, so there's no way around it other than create a huge permanent sign.

There's no Eircode on the address used by the oil delivery men... the police and doctors/nurses that arrive at regular intervals also just type "21 Cool Areaville" into their phones when finding the address.

I'm a bit confused. Is "Cool Areaville" a street name or something else such as a townland? If it's the latter, how can an address with just that prefaced by a number make any logical sense? Is there a street name missing from it? So what should the actual correct official address of this other house be?

One good place to check is on the eircode finder website. If you can find your house on the map they use either by entering the eircode or the address, then locate the other house and centre the target over it, it will tell you what they think is the official address.

Well I can add the other addresses' eircode to the sign I create.

Something like "This isn't 21 Cool Areaville, but 21 Jump Street, Cool Areaville. To find 21 Cool Areaville search for eircode XYZ 123"

It's clear the people visiting my property are not searching by eircode.

To be clear when I say "There's no eircode on the address" I mean that the printed slip that the oil delivery men use doesn't have the eircode on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,499 ✭✭✭Carlos Orange

Obviously you aren't going to post your address here but it might help if you got a few other people to suggest edits. Also maybe check in OpenStreetMap and see what they think. No idea but it's possible Google take data from there and incorporate it into their data set. If the address the old folks are using is invalid you might just be best to drop over and let them know.

That wasn't what I was suggesting.

I'm just confused as to how someone's address can be 21 followed by something that isn't actually a street name, so was suggesting using the eircode website, not to look up their eircode, but to see what the officially sanctioned address really is for the other property, and yours for that matter. Sometimes it can differ from what you think it is, especially in rural areas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,076 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

It's a townland that is also the name of a street.

    Ireland eh?

Google failing to handle there being a street just called Ranelagh or Phibsborough I'd guess.

I don't see the purpose of looking up the sanctioned address as I'll still need to communicate the sanctioned address through signage.

    There are 2 options:

    - Google fix the address pointer

    OR

    - I put up a sign

Funnily enough ... 20 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street are perfectly fine and correct, so it seems to be a glitch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

Google Maps also does on the fly lookups of addresses as you type them in, so even typing in an a completely invalid address can sometimes bring up a whole raft of suggestions, none of which correspond to what you were looking for. It's possible your address pops up at the head of that list when they do this, even though that isn't the actual address of the other house.

yes, just put up a sign outside highlighting your address and directions to other place.

Now to the wording is this too complicated?

"This isn't 21 Cool Areaville, but 21 Jump Street, Cool Areaville. To find 21 Cool Areaville search for eircode XYZ 123"

a lot of the delivery people are foreign and may not have best English.

At least a fair few took a bit of explaining when I occasionally met them face to face

In theory yes, every official address. Problems happen when official addresses differ from commonly used addresses. OP can you find both the properties on the map here, and compare the addresses for them? These are addresses as determined by An Post.

    Just tested there.

I searched for: "21 Jump Street, Cool Areaville"
    and my property came up

then searched for: "21 Cool Areaville"
    and their property came up

Doing the latter on Google brings you to my address.

I'm not clear what the point of this is though :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,076 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

    OK get this....

On Google Maps I typed in: "21 Cool Areaville" ... brings you to my property.

Then typed: "21 Jump Street, Cool Areaville" ... pointer doesn't move as it's correctly on my property

Then re-typed: "21 Cool Areaville" ... brings you to THEIR property

    Holy f*ckballs

Closing browser and re-starting process... "21 Cool Areaville" is back to my pad

maybe put "Mr X& Y dont live here" on it too.

Delivery drivers can be difficult in caring whether they have the address right or wrong...as long as they get to the right person they dont really care.

It might be a rental. They used to be addressed to a lady, but the oil deliveries were to a guy with a different surname.
