He's not far off the mark. There's a section of society who believe, or more so demands, that the government fulfill their every need, despite not actually contributing anything themselves.

    Huzzah for twins!

Is there another denial of service attack going on today or is it just the data Centre again?

The public consultation on the ending of daylight saving time has started. There's a survey on the DoJ website asking if we want it to end and whether we want to retain summer time or winter time. This is part of an EU wide consultation and of course brexit rears its ugly head again, because of the possibility that NI could be in a different time zone to us. I actually think that shouldn't matter tbh, its not as though we don't have to deal with different time zones anyway. And obviously Britain could do it as well. My choice was to stay on summer time. I wouldn't like to be dealiing with sunrise at 3:30am during the summer :(

Sure NI is already 50 years behind, what different will an hour make?

I'd stay as we are, but if we stick to one then summer time is the one.

    Longer evenings > brighter mornings.

Like the text I got last week...."Remember to put your clocks back one hour this weekend unless you live in Northern Ireland in which case your clocks go back to 1690"

It's pretty much an anachronism now. Not sure what benefit it brings but it's a pain in the arse resetting clocks and timers twice a year.

It may happen but it will piss some people off if it does. I wouldn't fancy living in Donegal and going out in full darkness at 9am on a dreary winter's morning.

There are some issues that could delay it anyway. Apparently the airline industry thinks it would require 18 months to prepare for such a change. So probably not next year if it happens at all.

On behalf of all developers dealing with really shít legacy code that has patches in place to deal with the time change, please don't vote against it. Means we'll have to dig through all that crap again.....

I actually quite like it being dark in the evenings in winter so the current set-up suits me fine. Though it seems the clock change is rather damaging to people so not that concerned to see it go.

Every year I see an email from our Test Lead telling everyone to run the regression suites that touch on this stuff.

So I was out walking my dog this morning and saw three little scrouts throw a banger across the road at a small dog. When I charged after them and called them on it one of them sheepishly says "it's our dog" which just made me angrier. I threatened to call the Gards, but they just smirked and walked away.

The late evenings in the summer are fantastic. They're well worth the price we pay in winter. I imagine tourists in the summer appreciate it too.

The poll asks which one you'd like to retain. I honestly can't see winter time being adopted all year round. It would mean sunrise at 4:00am at the height of summer.

In fairness, all systems and services should be running in UTC and be done with it. Let the consumer of said services do the timezone dance. I'm ALL for keeping Winter time (the current one that is the same as UTC).

That'd be the dream. We work in the Microsoft enterprise space, so most of our DBs are Microsoft hosted, so it's all UTC. But because of this, when the conversions to local time get messed up it'll display as 23:00 the day before and silly stuff like that. And then we've to try and tell the user to in fact change THEIR timezone and that the data is actually correct. We get about a week of arguing once a year over it.

In my defence, I'm the rare specimen of tech worker who gets up at 7:30 and goes to bed at 10:30... or maybe that's just old age :D

Congrats! Our 2.5-week-old has decided that sleep is for wimps. Or at least, sleep at night time. Good luck!
